I hard disagree that you "cannot be good at secret hitler." It's all about psychology and reading people (body language, tone of voice, etc.). Some people are just going to be naturally good at it.

I think he's assuming a similar skill set among players - so, can Secret Hitler identify one team which is slightly better than another team? no. But, can Secret Hitler identify one team which is hugely better than another team? yes, of course, a skilled team is always going to beat noobs. I do agree that Avalon is very deterministic - if you remember all the votes and cards, you can identify everyone.

It largely comes down to acting. Especially in convincing noobs. Balancing making a good, sound case without sounding phoney.

the rules/game is simple enough you could recreate it using index cards and some cardboard, if you're really desperate. the only trick is finding friends. Try to do it, it's one of my favorite games to play with friends, with strangers, with experienced gamers, and people who don't play many board games at all. it really is a fantastic game.

This game is amazing. My only criticism is that you need 5 players to play, which is more than most board games. I won as Hitler twice last night. In the first game, a liberal screwed up his interrogation, making everyone think he was Hitler. We had fascist presidents in the next two turns, so we got 2 more fascist policies and killed the other liberals. We then proceeded to vote against every president-chancellor combo in hopes that the card flip would be fascist and it was. In the 2nd game, I pulled the bold strategy of outing the other fascist with interrogation. On the next turn everyone trusted me, so they made me chancellor.

I went to a camp and we had like 7-8 people play including some councillors and we all had a blast, We played 3 games and 2 games fascists won and 1 game where the liberals won. This is a must play board game!

also you need 7+ if you want the fascists to be secret from Hitler which imo would be more fun

If you killed 2 liberals, you don't have to vote against the combo. The fascists have a majority, so just elect yourself. Why risk the upturn?

Ryan N it seems to me that having 12 fascist cards created too many circumstances where liberals were forced to draw hands of 3 fascist policies and started suspecting each other incorrectly all the time. By bumping it down to 11 total, that began to happen less often and a better balance was found.
@TypetyTypeType
@TypetyTypeType 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the guy's reasoning in the talk was just "I played with 12 and it was bad" and we have no idea if this was extensive playtesting or just a game or two. I feel like there's a real mathematical explanation, and would like to know what it is!
@mattjulson8070
@mattjulson8070 7 жыл бұрын
I've got a good guess. With 6:12, then you have 6 full rounds before re-shuffling AND that means all cards are drawn, which makes it way harder for fascists to lie about the card count. With 6:11, that means you can only play 5 rounds before re-shuffling AND two cards aren't drawn, so it leaves some doubt. Were those last two cards really both liberal and everyone had been telling the truth? Or were they both fascist and we've all been horribly lied to? It basically makes it so that you have to find the fascists in other ways besides just keeping track of what cards were claimed by who - which is more fun, IMO.
@TypetyTypeType

Good thinking. I wonder if that card-counting thing occurred in their playtests. Maybe there are multiple reasons, too.

Avalon is still better in term of difficulty, I know somebody will disagree because when I bought this in the past I feel like it definitely better than Avalon, but after a lot of playing people just say they got 3 fails, but I found a way to identify good guys, if they tell you they buried one success and pass you a success and fail to test what team are you in, 80% of the times they are good, because psychological speaking, bad guys feel guilty buried good card, they dun want to get themselves being suspicious

I was playing this today, and I was hitler. I thought that two of our best players were on my team because they were being very helpful and creating chaos, which led to me winning within 5 minutes. The best bit? Neither of those players were on my team, but had just not believed I would be hitler twice in a row, and the fascists on my team did very little, but we didn’t need to.

@samroper6183 6 жыл бұрын
Not really how is it strange? Also if you think the political views of hitler could be held in the public sphere without consequence you are sorely mistaken. I'd prefer it if producers of products didn't try to alienate people by showing a preference for either side of the political spectrum.

Just because something's derivative doesn't mean that it lacks merit, or doesn't stand on it's own. Cards Against Humanity is derivative of Apples to Apples, but both games give completely different experiences when you play them. It's easy to steal ideas, but really difficult to steal them in a way that captures, transforms, or improves upon the magic of the original. Like, there's the GDC lecture The Importance of Nothing where Jim Brown talks about how successful the original Unreal Tournament multiplayer map Facing Worlds was, but then details how every attempt to recreate the map in sequels always ended up sucking and lacking what was fun about the original map - and they were the ones who had the idea in the first place. It takes creativity and vision to look at an already established game, pick out what works and what can be tweak and improved and reframed into a better game. Even aesthetic changes are important; the stakes of getting into a bureaucratic fight against Hitler is much more higher than some abstract fantasy or sci-fi world.
