I haven't been taught about this muscle specifically, but I've always been taught to "move the leg forward instead of pushing it off the ground" which is just the same thing you demonstrated about kicking and taking a step. The stretches are also familiarfamiliar, especially the first one which we basically always do at the beginning of a practice that's focused on leg work.

Yes, I’ve learned about this muscle recently as well in the last few months. It helps me a lot with my workouts and with my singing practice. That on the Psoas muscles … So good for stability and flexibility.

Yosuke Sensei, it really make sense to me, because when im practicing yoko geri or mawashi geri, i fell my lower body flat or lack of the strenght to hold and finish the kick whit power, i used to think it was an stretch problem, but now i get it, so, thanks a lot, this is so much useful. Oss!, greetings from Chile!

Wow. I've figured out using this muscle for kicks when training by myself for half a year. Nice to know I'm on the right track. Once you figure it out, instead of kicking with the leg on the Mae-geri it feels more like stepping into the opponent's stomach. Or stabbing him with the foot. The move becomes very light, fast, and you feel as if you can do it indefinitely.

This group of muscles are not only used in kicking,in the chinese internal styles especially yiquan(taiki ken in japan) there's an emphasis on unifying the upper and lower body to get what is called the unified power, this is done through the practice of zhan zhuang, where the two body parts are linked together by the iliopsoas muscles.

Miranda Esmonde White, author of Aging Backwards and producer of the show Classical Stretch has a philosophy of stretching people can do indefinitely. She combines approaches to stretching from ballet, Pilates, and Tai Chi that emphasize movement instead of static stretches. Her method promotes flexibility, strength, and joint mobility at the same time. She has a couple of similar psoas stretches you can do standing. One is like a high mushurin dachi followed by straightening the rear leg into a front stance done while the pelvis is tilted forward. I hope you check out what she does and would be interested to know what you think.

Keeping the abs tight when transitioning between stances also helps maintain posture. I strained this muscle in my training, so care is needed to stretch and strengthen these muscles. Karate relies heavily on the psoas muscles, so you can also injure them from over use, especially if you are older and less flexible. Proper stretching and strengthening is a good preventative measure for sure.

I agree, but the abs are a different set of muscles, so be careful when and how you use them :)

A good video with clear information and well laid out. I would disagree with you that it is only taught in Japan, its importance has been taught in sports for decades.

Sensei, I notice you count "ichi, ni, san, shi". In my school we switched (many years ago) from "shi" to "yon" for 4. Are you familiar with "yon" in this usage? Could this be an Okinawa vs Japan difference? Thanks!

Iliopsoars muscle is very important to realising to karate The foot work sliding on the floor in the shape of a khundalini (cadeusus) occurs better when the iliopsoars is used. I was a former karate champ. Leo lipinski taught me a couple times. My sensei david was taught by mr. Miagi . And after six lessons a week for a few years, Iused kage uchi 240 times on a knife attacker.... During the two weeks prior i sparred everyone who would spar from my estate.... Then without sleep/blinking/thinking/eating/drinking water.... I shadow boxed through out the night by a leaky gas pipe...... The khundalini came after one night..... The second and third night...... I could call foxes in any number I desired........ I could use the makarba to knocm leaves from trees and catch one hundred and fifty leaves (not one touched the floor)..... I could also lift

This Is science, all kicking sport like soccer know the importance of this muscle. And remember the four forbidden muscle of quadriceps. Femorali Rectus! The only one (then the Ileo) to much lost on leg day. 😂

Sorry, but in Germany we also teach it. I have written a book in 2012, in which the m. iliopsoas is already referred to the maegeri. By the way, I really appreciate your videos. Keep up this good work! 😜👍🏻👊🏻
