How to run faster without getting out of breath. If you want to improve your running speed, I'm going to show you the most overlooked things to help you run faster, for longer. Whether you're a marathon runner, or a beginner training for your first 5K this tip for how to breathe when running will help you to run faster without struggling with your breathing.

I find when running at an 'easy' pace, if I become mindful of my breathing and breathe in through my nose for, say, 6 steps, hold for 2, then breathe out for 6, my heart rate drops by maybe 5-7 bpm and my pace may also increase by a seconds per km without any change to my perceived effort. (Sometimes the holding for 2 can be a bit difficult so I just miss that bit out, but even as I run closer to lactate threshold, I can still breathe in for 6 and out for 6).

I find a mantra helps me focus my breathing..running can be a great way to preactice mindfulness

I can now nose breath while doing slower training runs. Should the goal be to work up to higher intensity while still nose breathing? And ultimately be able to race 5k nose breathing?

In my experience, mental capacity is a major problem when it comes to running and any other activity. Using your mind to control your body (mind-body connection).

As a former swimmer, nose breathing seems impossible. I have always breathed deeply with my mouth. Is this really necessary? Any other former swimmers have opinions?

James have you ever looked at 3 + 2 breathing which claims to help injury by having breaths alternate with foot strike?

I sure have. It fits well at certain levels of effort. Whether the claims are legit 🤷‍♂️ I think it's a bit of a reach tbh. The logic follows for bilateral breathing with swimming, but has a much bigger impact when looking at a swim stroke, compared with running gait. Not sure it's totally relevant to injury risk/prevention.

Not good for me then. I can’t breath through my nose at anything over walking pace and that’s on a good day. My nasal passages just don’t allow it.

There's a simple nose unblocking exercise you can do, look up oxygen advantage system. Once u blocked yes it will be hard at first but it will become easier you just have to give it time

@@wilmerrose thanks I will look at this, it looks interesting. However, this looks to focus very much on oxygen intake whereas I have also looked at science that focuses more on the importance of carbon dioxide expiration over oxygen intake. It is easy to get enough oxygen and sometimes the problem is too much oxygen and too slow a rate of carbon dioxide out.
