I literally weep when I watch these documentaries about Secretariat. He was THE GREATEST RACEHORSE EVER. He was not perfect which actually made him perfect for the every day human. I sleep with the footage of the 1973 Belmont under my pillow. Still tear up every time I watch it. Chic Anderson with the iconic “ He’s moving like a tremendous machine. “. The Hopeful was his second greatest race in my opinion. Thank you for this portrayal of Secretariat. It had me longing for more. I can’t describe the sadness when he stopped racing. It’s a shame Penny had to stop racing him at 3. No telling what he could’ve done as a 4 year old. We can only imagine.

In my life I've seen things that would make you cry, laugh, and be filled with pride. Secretariat was a horse that would make you a believer, and a joy to see him race. He is and was a gift from God. Just like great singers, actors, Doctors etc. etc..

He was the PERFECT horse in every way not just measurement.

I just saw a clip of Andrew Beyer from June 2011. He went back and gathered up all the racing stats on Secretariat and reworked them using his current methodology to see what his rating would be today. He came up with 139. To say that is awesome would be an understatement!

Holds all triple crown records. Until some horse breaks all these records I will say that horse is the best ever.

The most astonishing horse and thrilling athlete I have ever witnessed, truely a once in a lifetime event, and I was lucky enough to witness it. I have no doubt at all that Secretariat was and will be considered the greatest racehorse of all time.

Jimmy Gafney should have made it a point to call Laurin himself. I would never have taken for granted the message would get where it was suppose to go. Especially when Jimmy knew that horse so well....and Laurin knew he knew and would have listened to him. To find out later that the horse's mouth was hurting him every time Turcotte pulled the reins just hurts my heart.

When you start talking about all time greats, names like Man O'War, Citation, Kelso, Native Dancer, and Seattle Slew often come up for American horses. Among the all time European greats it's always Brigadier Gerard, Mill Reef, Nijinsky, or Sea Bird. You can argue a few these may have had a better overall career than Secretariat did. But there's no horse on this list or anywhere else that would've gotten to within 10 lengths of Secretariat in the 73' Belmont. That was God showing off that day!!

at the 1 3/8 mi mark in the Belmont, Secretariat's time was faster than Man O' Wars. It's in Bill Nack's bio, 2:11 1/5, 3 sec faster than MOW, page 323, top of page.

i meant to say the video of his FIRST race is here on YTube. Watch it to the end, and see him flying. I think if there had been just another 15 sec or so of racing time he wld've won it. Clem Florio watched fm the box and really had an eye. He yelled out, "THAT'S my Derby horse." Others thought he was nuts to be so sure, hmmmm.

@ShamWasBetter1973 Ruffian's leg snapped. Literally broke off from the bone, was only dangling by the skin. That was the only reason why Foolish Pleasure won that race. If Ruffian didn't get break her leg, she would have won, no doubt. Anybody who has ever watched her race can tell you that. I watched the original footage of it on youtube not long ago. It's not the best quality but you may be able to find it. Very tragic.

his first race, this shld've shown him racing full out, in full stretch, flying and coming on to the leaders, just a little more time the video of race here shows it , he might have won and after being slammed and sandwiched betw 2 horses out of the gate. Unbelievable.

type in Secretariat first race here on YT watch. Hard to know where he is, but out of gate video is circled. Point is it was first race as baby, Nack describes how he was hit almost perpendicularly by Quebec fm rt and fm lt and sandwiched. He moaned, climbed w/front legs. Any other horse wld've gone down. But he was big strong even then. Watch Feliciano try to find running room all over the place, 4 wide. WATCH him at end of race, eating up ground. Clem Florio knew, "THAT'S my KD horse" for 1973

@MrItaliano I don't think that outside the borders of America is a lifless desert. And I love horses everywhere, every horse is a good horse. And if a horse wins a U.S. race does not mean its the next big thing in horse racing, its the heart that makes it a winner. And yes I love Black Caviar, Frankel, Goldikova, Phar Lap, Zarkava, Eclipse, and more. And yes, Frankie Dettori is an excellent rider, but I don't think he is the best. I think Eddie Arcaro is, but thats just my opinion.

To not say anything bec Lucien's father or mother in law had died and he had to leave shld've not stopped Gaffney. a horse isn't a different race. races are for people. asian, native american, white, black, hispanic. when you fill out your census form it doesnt have "horse" listed under race.

It is so funny that everybody forgets Northern Dancer the greatest sire of the 20th century, and god has nothing to do with any of these horses or any animal.

I never said i train the best but i work with good horses, and Man O War has the records for the belmont and preakness but that's for the distance he ran.

Secretariat won a race by 31 lengths . Man o war ,won a race by 100 lengths. God sure did love his BIG REDS. In my opinion, no horse is the greatest because, on any day, that horse, may have a cist in his mouth and lose. (Secretariat) at the Wood. Man o war gets beaten by a long shot, ironically,Upset,which I think he beat later. On that day was Man o war not feeling well? That's why you can't pick the greatest. I rode show jumping horses in my youth . Believe me,horses have bad days too. Here's a big dream,imagine, Secretariat,and Man o war, both feeling ,on top of the world,racing down the back streach . Hope the hockey's wore different colors ,cuz ,,you wouldn't be able to tell the red from the other. The winner. Ain't going down that rabbit hole. You decide. Big Reds👍👍👍👍👍 love em.

well, Canada is part of the Americas and Secretariat won his last race at Woodbine in Ontario. Watch THAT one, 1 5/8 miles, on deep grass, 30 degree cold rainy, even snow flurries, October 28, 1973. You're clearly being snooty about your knowledge, but you needn't be so arrogant and rude.

The Belmont in the U.S. is not the longest , the longest is called San Juan Capistrano at Santa Anita 1-3/4. The longest race is the Prix Du Cadran and Gold Cup at York England, these races are 2-1/2 miles. The Belmont is the second longest in the U.S. , get your facts straight.

I too saw this horse. Yes it is beautiful stunning that horse run so. However presently, the mass producing and injuries mean slaughter fodder. Big side industry, especially in Australia. They deserve better than an excuse to wear a fancy hat. Don't give green grass to insulin resistant horses or they will get laminitus. Because we could sure use another Triple Crown winner, since there hasn't been one since 1978. I was a senior in HS in '78, so if you are training the goods, let's see less talk and more horses.
