In this episode in our series of bonsai techniques we will be covering the purpose of sacrificial branch growth. The main purpose of sacrificial branch growing is to gain cellular growth in the areas near the branch itself. It can serve two functions, 1) to gain girth like to thicken a trunk and/or 2) to help close up big wounds. This technique is used mainly by field growers to gain some big gains in a short amount of time. If you enjoy these videos please like, subscribe and leave a comment below! Thank you, Tom. I have several sacrificial branch growing. Everyone asks me about them. I really should put them away from my display benches.

Off topic, but your container pond in the background is amazing. What size is it? And where did you find the pot? Type of plants used ?

5:23 is that tree with the yellow fruit from the Ximenia genus? It's hard to tell. I'd be quite surprised to see someone else growing a bonsai of one of those

Unfortunately it’s just a plain oh ume. Not a tropical plum but I wouldn’t mind to try one if it would grow in my area

While the sacrificial branch is extending, healing, thickening, are you able to manage the rest of the tree's growth on a more refined level? Or does the new energy flow blasting through the tree make it too impossible to refine at the same time?

It really depends on the tree. I usually feed all my trees pretty heavily so I will get tremendous growth all over. In this particular case; elms are fairly rather easy to ramify at a refine level while having a strong sacrificial growth. You will just have to keep on top of balancing out the energy on the refining section "more trimming and pushing back" while on the explosive growth let it just go and grow.

yep you heal one and create next one at deciduous trees wounds heal so slow and having one on top of tree hmmmmm I rather wait for flawless tree with more value. next thing is your wound will be visible forever .
