Kennedy's comment at 8:11 is everything. They didn't have time for Michael Arndt to write his screenplay because Disney board members and investors demanded a film be out by 2015 regardless. The motivation to create new Star Wars was not a creative one, it was a financial one, and the end result of episodes 7.8 and 9 make that point staggeringly obvious.

@JG15705 жыл бұрын
I'm so happy that George Lucas said no to Harrison Ford when it came the idea of killing Han Solo in Return of the Jedi because that would have been a terrible idea. Because the death we were not expecting to feel sad about in Return of the Jedi was Darth Vader's but we did. And Han Solo dying would have stole all the attention and would have taken so much emotion away from the scene where Vader dies. Episode 7 was the right place for it to happen because it is a Star Wars tradition. Qui-Gon Jinn who was the leader of the good guys in episode one died in the first installment of the prequel trilogy. And then Obi-Wan Kenobi became the leader and he died in episode 4 the first installment of the original trilogy. And then Han Solo became the leader and he died in episode 7 the first installment of the sequel trilogy. Episode 7 was the right place for it to happen. I understand that at the time Harrison thought George only wanted to use the characters in the original trilogy for just that trilogy and there were going to be no more after their story because George Lucas wanted to go back and tell the backstory of Vader. But still it would have been a terrible idea for Return of the Jedi.

Very well said.
@bearcattony004 жыл бұрын
Harrison probably came back when told Han would die.
@JG15704 жыл бұрын
bearcattony00 Harrison doesn’t hate the Han Solo character. He was just always dissatisfied with where Han stood in the story at the very end. He enjoyed working on new hope and empire but he was very disappointed with his role in Jedi. The reason why he geeks out over Indiana Jones more was because he has a connection with that character because when he was a kid that’s what kids watched as far as action adventure stuff. It was mainly westerns in his childhood days. He loves story telling. And if his role plays a great part in the story he’ll do it. That’s why he came back for Force Awakens and rise of Skywalker.
@danilomejiarua45213 жыл бұрын
It should have been done at the end of Episode V. More emotional impact, and we hate Darth Vader even more, so the reveal would have been even more shocking. After that, Solo doesn´t do much in ROTJ.

3:25 is a perfect demonstration of the change that happened between how Star Wars was managed under Lucas and how it changed under Kathleen. It is a film made by a committee not by an artist and that's why to me no matter how hard they try it will never feel right.
@CrixMadine4 жыл бұрын
LFP Animations a group of people usually come up with better ideas than one man, although not always. Having one man deciding about almost everything is quite risky (which we can see in the prequels). And I’m pretty sure there was a lot of artists involved in TFA. We’ll never know if the sequels made by Lucas would be better than what we have.
@LFPAnimations4 жыл бұрын
Paweł Wincentowicz Actually almost every iconic film was usually spearheaded by one visionary. The Dark knight, 2001 A Space Odyssey (written by someone else but Kubrick changed it a lot), The Godfather, Apocalypse Now. I can’t think of a single iconic movie thag didn’t have a visionary director in charge. The sequels have no visionary. They have a committee. A boars of directors at Disney making creative decisions. Thats the problem.

@jamesbirks90032 жыл бұрын
It's like the issues flipped from the prequels. The prequels had a terrific story but sometimes let down by an overuse of CGI and bad dialogue. The sequels are undeniably very well made films and rediscovered the nice balance between CGI and model work/physical effects. The story was a total mess though. Is there even really much of anything going on that makes any sense? Not really. It's like these movies were just made to make a cash grab and played on people nostalgia for the original films. Sad.
@choglatemilg2 жыл бұрын
yeah I agree, that's essentially what George Lucas and others associated said, he basically wrote them an outline for the three movies that was supposed to be set after the fall of the empire and it was going to be about how the rebellion rebuilds the galaxy (or something along those lines) but they wanted to do something more for the nostalgia and he wasn't really interested in being a part of that. honestly I can't fault Disney for that as I did think that the first order was a really cool concept, I just think it could have all been written better especially the antagonists, it was kind of a revolving door for them and its sad to see so much stuff retconned with really little to no explanation.

I grew up with the originals, life time fan. I also think that EP 7 was a good movie even though it in so many ways is a remake of a new hope. Episode 8 was a disaster that ruined the magic, Rian Johnson is terrible and was probably not a star wars fan to begin with, but i think that he was also too weak and was overrun by Cathleen Kennedy and that it became her own creation. Then JJ comes back and makes an okay episode 9 with what he has to work with from the ruins of EP8. You can tell in the end of this documentary that JJ was excited with what was going to happen to Luke moving forward, little did he know what Rian and Cathleen had in store for Luke Leia Finn and Poe, but also that we were going to get Rose and Holdo, thanks. I love the passion that went into making the sequel trilogy from everybody, but it lacked one creative eye over seeing the entire trilogy, you didn’t need one guy directing all but somebody like gorge Lucas who really wants to tell this story, cause when watching these films it’s not a story that needs to be told, what would have been a great story is to see Luke’s new Jedi, the republic and what came of the galaxy, not just a rehash and essentially making the ot meaningless just to retell the same story, at the end of the day it is what it is, but the fact that they never truly had a plan and a proper desire to include George Lucas the og creator and his story insights was a huge mistake

Maybe but I still really enjoyed all three of the movies, and I will always defend that Last Jedi to me is tied with Empire for the best Star wars movie. Both take massive risks and I would've really loved to see where Rian johnson took it after that. And despite the lack of a plan I still saw themes that carried through all three like if you don't learn from the past you'll just repeat old mistakes. This is why I was ok with the Emperor coming back too, to me it felt like the living personification of the past coming back to haunt the galaxy. Rise of Skywalker is very checkmarky with trying to please certain "fans" but even so I still thought it was pretty good movie and thankfully despite making Rey a palptine the theme I saw of it does'nt matter where you come from you can still be a hero and do amazing things is still there. Infact I'd argue it's even worse than just being born from nobody, imagine if you were the child of hitler. Not a fun thought to have

The HUGE missed opportunity in these movies was to make Finn the main character. Going from stormtrooper to finding out he is force sensitive to maybe even getting tempted to the dark side before Luke shows up to pull him back to the light. It was such a missed opportunity to have that connection from stormtrooper to jedi. Then Daisy Riddley's character is the new Han Solo. She is the best pilot around helping Finn escape the clutches of the empire and Kylo while also meeting up with Han and being so impressed with her piloting skills he asks her to join his crew. And she says NO this is my ship now you can be part of my crew if you want and they join forces to become one of the greatest aspects of the resistance. Luke and Han and Leia all get back together and Luke senses Daisy Riddleys new character is force sensitive too. He trains her while Kylo is tracking them both down and she is not totally trained and not ready yet, Luke has to battle Kylo. And Kylo being an old student of his can tell his moves and tactics and kills him. Daisy escapes to Leia under Lukes advice and Finn being force sensitive shows up too and they hug and stuff and Continue the romantic plot between Finn and Daisy while also mirroring that theme between Leia and Haan who are both training them. Kylo kills BOTH Leia and Haan in the same scene to really send a message to the audience how far into the dark side he has gone. This one dude has killed ALL the old characters. So TOGETHER Daisy and Finn as a couple they take down Kylo and The emperor because they are so strong. I mean you don't need to have the emperor in there just saying... since they shoe horned it into the series anyway it would be way more satisfying for two jedis in love to take down the dark side.

Rey was a lonely scavenger, who was in desperate need for companship/friendship/carehood. On the other Rey was to Finn, the first person ever to ACTUALLY care for him. He had been commanded and taken care of cold and calculative officers, a brutal company captain and competetive co-workers. They were both innocent little adult children basically who got attached to each other by having a chance for a real friendship.

I'm not nerded out so much that I'm going to podcast and blog about how they ruined a franchise. A movie to me is an escape from real life, and if it takes you back to a younger simpler time in your life that's just a bonus. Nice video. But I think that an overall lack of outline for all three of these films is what truly killed any sense of it being a SW movie for me. I remember half way through EP7 thinking "what movie am I watching?" as it didnt feel like a SW movie. Contrast it to the other movies where it was made by an artist with an overall view of what they wanted, these are made to simply make money. Hopefully Favreau and Filloni will steer the ship in the future.
