The German Schenpper Crossbow of 1650 in detail. Adjustable sights, advanced trigger system, and pom poms! What more could the discerning Renaissance gentleman want for his hunting trips.
Sporting crossbows like these came in to fashion after crossbows had fallen out of favour for military use. They were expensive, sophisticated, equipment used for hunting. Freed from the concerns of military economy and durability this period saw the rapid development of many new trigger systems and other features on crossbows.

Most of them likely weren't too bright, education wasn't very accessible and innovation wasn't always well received. From a modern perspective the majority of people back then prone to ridiculous superstitions and lived in squalor, it shouldn't be too surprising that people would view them as backwards. And it's also important to remember that the people that knew how to make these kinds of things were few and far between. Just some food for thought.

That is a beauty, thanks for shearing. The trigger system is more or less like a double set trigger for a flintlock rifle. It is posible to move heavy waight by litle movement because it is spring loaded. Never saw that on a crossbow. Very interesting. On my flintlock builds I only used normal triggers until now. Your videos meke me hungry for more of it every time ;-)

As a German I can assume that these pompoms are decoration and community sign. Here in Germany we have a LONG tradition of "Schützenvereine" which means Shooter's Communities originating in hunting gatherings. And the two colours of the Schützenverein and the fairs they hold regularly, the "Schützenfest" are exactly this shade of green and white! Entire streets are decorated in these green white flaggs. And the contestents also all wear green coats, white shirts, green hats with a white feather sticking in it. Since thr Schnepper is a German system, its primarely a hunting crossbow, I kinda out 2 and 2 together and say that these pompoms are an early version of this tradition. No actual function, just for visuals.

After that the government deemed these weapons just too atrocious and dangerous for us mere law abiding citizens.

Hey Todd, I just wanted to say. I have hunted with a bow since I was a child. And as kids we used to use rabbit fur "pomp pomps" on our strings. Today they are rubber. And we did this to dampen the vibration when releasing an arrow. Less vibration = less noise. Instead of the THUMMMM or twang sound. You got a quieter muffled "thud" obviously the advantages of this is a quieter arrow release. Deer for example duck down to run and can actually duck under an arrow from hearing the shot, before the arrow reaches the animal. Just my 2 cents.

Thank you for sharing the inner workings with us. Found it very fascinating. Quick question. Wouldnt a 200# crossbow be comparable to a 70 or 80# long bow? That would be plenty strong enough for the deer where I live. Or is it more like 40#s? Its very possible my math is way off.

I find it curious that the crossbow is 200 pound draw and not sufficient for deer. We use 60 to 70 pound conventional re-curve and compound bows for deer as a norm. I realize the the draw distance on that cross is quite a bit shorter than a re curve.

Wippe allows longer lever. Goat foot has pivot point behind lock. Wippe lever can be as long as the tiller. Also shorter turn angle makes it easier to apply bodyweight to the lever. Plus forward push does not interfere with the sight or bolt-clip, leaving more freedom designing back end of the stock .

At the proper distance you should be more than capable of taking deer with it, in fact Ohio won't let you use one with more than a 200lb draw weight. Of course this is in regards to using modern bolts, so that likely changes the equation quite a bit.

don't crossbows kick forward rather than backward or is my arse doing the talking?
@exploatores
@exploatores 5 жыл бұрын
it´s still Newtons law, the string, bow and bolt goes forward. as they do it pushes the stock backwards. But I can see why you would think the crossbow is kicking forwards.
@maximusprime98
@maximusprime98 5 жыл бұрын
@@exploatores I would have thought so too, there is a force pushing back equal to the force that pushes the bolt forward. But anecdotally (I've never shot a powerful crossbow) they kick forward, I imagine because of the moving mass of the bow arms impart momentum greater than the recoil. Can you or someone with experience confirm or deny this (preferably Todd). It would also explain why crossbows didn't tend to have stocks.
@exploatores
@exploatores 5 жыл бұрын
Lets do a bit of simple math. we got a crossbow at 5kg, string and bow .2 kg and a bolt .8 kg. the fraction of a second before the bolt leave the string it goes 250 m/s. then you got a force of 250 newton moving forward. 250newton/5kg gives 50 m/s push of the crossbow back in to the shooter. a momentum forward being greater then the recoil would break newtons laws.
@maximusprime98
@maximusprime98 5 жыл бұрын
@@exploatores just Google crossbow reverse recoil. crossbownut.com/do-crossbows-have-recoil/ www.crossbownation.com/community/threads/reverse-limb-design-and-its-effect-on-reverse-recoil.12962/. 7daystodie.com/forums/showthread.php?33257-Bows-and-crossbows-have-recoil www.reddit.com/r/Crossbow/comments/77ptps/crossbow_recoil/ as I said can anyone with experience shooting powerful crossbows confirm this. As I understand it unlike a gun the force of the bow is forward and the opposite force is applied to the bolt rather than the crossbow. Now there will be some force acting on the crossbow and shooter from the bolt but as it's so much lighter it's not experienced.
