Thank you for sharing this! We have used Level 2 & 3 of Torchlight and really enjoyed it. Its really nice to see a walk through and hear your thoughts on this curriculum, especially since there doesn't seem to be a lot of reviews on the older levels of Torchlight.

Of the literature-based curriculums, Torchlight has been towards the bottom of my list, but I really liked the activities and books that you showed. I bought Levels K and 1 to supplement Build Your Library and wasn't thinking to go further with it. I'll definitely be giving Torchlight a closer look now.

You come up with the best simple but creative ideas. Do you make the lit journals as you go along or do you prep it before?

Yes I do! As we’re reading if something comes up in the book, I will just automatically go to the computer search whatever it is and print something out for the kids. You can find anything nowadays on Wikipedia or just anywhere online.

Amazing flip through! Thank you so much for letting us see so much detail. What ages are your boys? This level seems very teacher intense. How much independent work is there? We started out with Torchlight many years ago. Once my youngest started his own curriculum Torchlight was just too much for me with two kids at different levels.

My boys are 11 & 13 ,, it’s a Socratic curriculum , so it’s discussion based , so it’s very teacher intensive! Because it’s discussion based I did the read aloud or audio books .. did our discussion then they would branch off and do whatever activities they had .. it was also super easy to have both my boys do it together I wouldn’t even imagine doing two different levels of this curriculum. My daughter would even sit in on some of the lessons. Obviously I didn’t expect for her to do the activities.

Did you start torchlight from the beginning? My kids are starting out as older kids, I heard TL levels aren't necessarily grade level so starting wherever isnt a big deal, what is your opinion on that?

This is the one and only level we’ve ever used,, my boys are 11 and 13 I felt like the topics , book choices are perfect … if I’m correct, the other levels have a bigger history focus,,, this level focuses more on a worldly social studies, globalization and ethics. We’re really loving the diversity in the literature. It’s not really graded even though the levels begin with K this curriculum is leveled by age and topic..

I wish you had gone through Art of Finance even a tiny bit. I heard you say you didn't use it, although if youre reviewing the bundle, leaving it out is a bummer

We left it out because I had already purchased something else to cover that topic … I’ll be revisiting this curriculum with my daughter next year I’ll definitely be using it with her!

The cabinet you’re talking about was an old fire extinguisher cabinet,, we found it at goodwill! We might bring that incentive cabinet back this year !! 😊
