Secular Science Curriculum Preview | The Story of Science

Finding a secular Science curriculum can be tough! Next year we will be using The Story of Science: Aristotle Leads the Way and I am really excited to see how well this one works for us. I hope this video helps you decide if this curriculum could work for your family.

This is so cool. What a great find. I'm definitely going to investigate. I have a 5th grader, 2nd grader and Pre-K. We're planning on making science and history a family subject. This would be a great resource for my history loving 5th grader, to give him some added level appropriate content. It looks like it's the intersection of history and science. How often are there proposed science demonstrations/experiments? And do they involve any special equipment? Thank you for sharing!

Looking through the materials list, it appears most materials are every day items. Since I haven’t used the curriculum yet it’s hard to say exactly how many experiments are included without reading through it all. I do see activities listed in every lesson, some are experiments, others are not. My youngest really enjoys hands on experiments so we will be getting Mel’s Science kits to be sure she gets plenty of hands on opportunities. Thank you for watching!

We also finished CC ancient history and loved it, and I debated forever what to do for this year. I finally settled on medieval history, so now I’m thinking maybe we should get Newton at the Center to add on to that for my almost 10 year old. Hmmm…

So how did this end up working out for you? How are you pacing it out? How much, if any, math does it cover? We're considering adding it alongside CC Ancients that we will be starting soon for my kiddos in 2nd, 4th, & 8th. I initially found it after flipping through a book I picked up at a yard sale called An Illustrated History of Science and wishing I could use it. It includes chapters on things that came before like math, philosophy, & medicine, and also later things like engineering and computer science, but doesn't have the space to really go in depth, plus no activities to go with it. This seems like it might be a solution. 🤔

It hasn’t worked as well as I had hoped. At this time we’ve set aside the teacher guide and are just reading the text and incorporating activities as they appeal to us.

I have used both book series with my older homeschoolers (now graduated). I am using the History of US now with my younger. Do you think that I could add in Story of Science and still keep doing the American history? We would likely just read both a little every day. I thought about adding in some world history and remembered I have this series. My son likes the history books so far. Just wondering what your thoughts would be. Thanks for the great review. We used this series for 8th grade with BYL.

Interesting. Is there a particular reason that you haven’t used it, or is it just one of those things that never made it into rotation?

What grade is this targeted for? I am in search of a deep dive secular science curriculum for 3-5th grade. We did building blocks of science book 3 with the experiment kits, but the science seems very shallow. Is this appropriate for a science gifted 8/9 yro?

The teacher’s guide suggests grades 5-8. However, depending on the child’s interest it could easily be adapted for a little younger or older. My youngest daughter loves science (9) and she finds the book interesting enough, but the lesson materials boring so we have set aside the teacher guide for the time being and are focusing on the text of the books themselves.
