The Law. Great review if you have a slippery memory....
I am not a lawyer, Canadian Firearm Regulations are ALWAYS subject to change and interpretation. I am passing on the information I am given by the Canadian Firearm Program and the RCMP. It is YOUR responsibility to verify the information and keep current on any changes.

@@JudahMaccabee_ Unfortuneatly, this is a very "grey" area. There have been cases, where firearms are stored as you described (which is in accordance with the law) and were stolen from a residence; the owners were charged. The argument will come down too "was the due dilligence to conceal the cases made". I personally, would keep them in a closet or basement, behind some boxes or something. At the end of the day, a safe bolted into concrete is the best defense, but depending on the province and crown; even that is not enough sometimes.

This is fantastic. Looking to get my restricted firearms license. The thing that had been making me hesitate from doing so in the past was that I was under the impression that you're basically stuck behind really strict laws about storing the gun in your own home. Hey Rod, have you heard of the "Harry Barnes (Johnny Sombrero) Case" in Ontario? Had his firearms (prohib's, restricted etc.) seized, they were locked in metal lockers or "cabinets" - Judge ruled they counted as a "safe" and fell under the definition. All his firearms were returned.

Hey Rod, dumb question, what is the difference if any between like a key locking cabinet and a combo safe, is the cabinet still considered a "safe" in terms of legal storage for restricted or thought of as lesser?? I have seen the 150$ green standard small cabinet at CT. If i were to buy an AR and a Glock, Would they still be considered in a "safe" or just a cabinet ? Thanks man

As I interpret the act, it appears all firearms (non-restricted, restricted, and prohibited alike) must be stored in a manner that renders them inoperable, such as a secure locking device (S.6(b)(i)). Again, may be wrong, but just wondering. Edit: I likely am wrong, as Civil Advantage rightly corrected me regarding the storage of non-restricted firearms. But I'm not deleting this post because I'd rather not look like the kind of person that refuses acknowledge his errors.

If you're going to get into specifics of construction materials and specify a 3" fastener, then you have to include some warning that the selected fastener is long enough to penetrate electrical and water conduits concealed in the walls. These are normally centered in a 2x4 and with standard 1/2" sheathing a 1 1/2" fastener should not reach them, and in exterior walls where 2x6 construction might be used it is probably fine to use 3" screws. 1 1/2" fasteners are insufficient, however. Electrical conductors may be concealed less than 1 1/2" in a stud, but then they should be covered by a metal plate if the construction complies with building codes. I would suggest locating water and electrical devices, ensuring you are clear of them and use 4 1/2" by 1/4" lag bolt, since the screw you prescribed does not specify gauge, four #8 (the most common) screws could be sheared by a hard pull by hand, or easily broken off by even a small pry bar and if someone is intent on stealing a heavy gun case full of ammo and equipment, the screws offer almost no resistance whatsoever. I don't have a lot of firearms so I can store them in a carrying case with two incorporated locks. It has two loops for additional locks which I can use to lock it onto a couple of eye bolts fastened to studs, so it is both immobilized and locked, in a manner similar to a safe, but I can also throw the whole thing in my van, and even lock it to hard points in the van so it can not be removed without a key, actually two keys, or cutting hardened steel. A case is nice, and a thief would probably appreciate you supplying one when he steals your guns, and case, which are both very easily taken from your possession when they are left completely mobile in a simple gun case. So that's option number whatever. A cheap safe alternative. $75.

Rod: Greetings from Calgary and thanks for all the great work. Here's my question (or request for your opinion): my local range guy says my little "Bulldog Vault" (big enough for a pistol and a couple magazines but that's about it) becomes a "safe" if I lag bolt it to a stud in my house. What say you to this? It's rather flimsy to be calling a safe in the conventional way one thinks of a safe. Personally I'm keeping my cable lock and trigger lock both on anyway (children in the house), but I am curious as to what you think. Thanks again for all the great videos.

Great video, I also understand you can store them in a room that has been specifically designed for firearms storage, eg no windows, metal door etc and its basically considered a safe: www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/fs-fd/storage-entreposage-eng.htm. I'm not sure how this works but I assume it would have to be inspected to see if it meets the requirements(I'll call the firearms office and send them my specs for the room). I was going to look into it because I'm probably going to be building a house in the next couple years and will probably throw in a secure man cave of sorts.

For your Option 1, if the pistol is unloaded, trigger locked, and put in the case and locked the cases. Can the case be put anywhere in the house or the case still needs to lock in a room? I trigger locked all my pistol and put it in the gun cabinet with a key lock. But sometimes I will have one pistol out in my room upstair to dry fired. And afterwards, can I just do option 1, pistol unloaded, trigger locked, and put in the case and locked the cases and just put in my bed side? Is this comply the law?

What about firesafe they sell at staples, costco. They weight about 50 pounds , they are thiker than gun cabinet , they offer 1h to 1.5h fire resist, and you can bolt them to the wall too.. they are too small for rifles but you can easily put 4 or 5 handguns in it.. Do they qualify? Are they legal? Not eveyone can move 300 pounds safe. 50-60 pounds is pretty much the heaviest i can move from the store to my house without the need to hire movers. So can we use those small fire restistant small safe sold at staple and costco?

What are you/they basing that on? I could be wrong but I don't see anything in the laws or regulations to support that claim. As I write this he CFPs own storage regs off their own website state that: (1) The firearm is itself must be unloaded. (2) Ammunition can be in the same locked container as the firearm. Unloaded. As in ACTS+PROVEn safe. No live ammunition in the firearm whatsoever. That includes no loaded mags inside the firearm itself. Since ammo inside the locked container is explicitly allowed, and since it would stand to reason not to have it floating around loosely therin; so storing them inside an ammo container is prudent. A magazine serves the same purpose a container. So long as it remains outside of the firearm, while still locked inside a cabinet, container or room that is difficult to break into, I fail to see what specific law or regulation would this unsafe or illegal.

Great videos - but just to clarify - I called the 1 800 731 4000 and they said that even if a pistol is stored in a gun safe (as distinct from a locked box or case) I am still required by law to have a trigger lock on the pistol. Can anyone confirm?

With Restricted you don't need cable or trigger locks when in the gunsafe? I thought they had to be double locked.

maxreuv Try LeBarons in Markham? May be not the same safe, but there are a wide variety of variably sized, reasonably priced safes with key-code locks. Plus the store in general just feels like the right place to discuss and purchase hunting/outdoor gear, better than an oversized grocery store imo...

You should clarify your statement because when you say you don't need a secure locking device on the firearm in a safe I think you were referring to non-restricted firearms, because I believe you still do for restricted no matter if it's in a safe. Some people might get confused. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nNp6eJWDl5yscX0.htmlm48s

Re-reading it I could be wrong? The bullet after says "or" in the manual when I interpreted it as still needing a locking device. Another thing to think about is how they define what a safe or vault is. I have a Stack-On security cabinet which I don't think would be considered a safe or vault

+Brandon Parker Some RCMP are gun owners themselves and very helpful, however the important thing to remember is firstly, the RCMP are not the legal authority on firearms. That is the Firearms Act, and the RCMP have been known to manipulate it to serve their purpose. Secondly, they're under to obligation to give truthful information. Take everything they say with a grain of salt, including their own published material. For the most part their published information is true, however they have been known to alter items/dates, but mostly they are guilty of withholding information which gives firearm owners more freedom.

@@brandonparker138 Best thing to do with any firearms questions is to call the CFO and ask them to send it to you in writing. If you ever have a problem with your storage method, you can show that to the police.

how about storing a Prohibited firearm?

It must be in a safe, with a secure locking device, and depending on the type of prohib, the firing pin or bolt carrier might need to be removed. (Generally Machineguns)

@Albertalorian
@Albertalorian Жыл бұрын
They used too, but recent firearms cases, have set a precedent, that cabinets are not "safes" and weather or not they can be considered a "secure locking container"will be up to the officer/judge. The best thing to do, is get a safe, even a cheap one, and securely mount it.

Locking ammo in the same lock box, case ect with your firearm is illegal. Not allowed, no permitted by Canadian law. Not sure why you've deemed this okay and are spreading this misinformation..
