Back when the 38 spl and 357 were the state of the art it was easy, you bought new or used. Today there are police trade in options that give you more capabilities not just in the gun but also in the duty holsters and duty belts.

In the early 1980s i worked as a guard for a Massachusetts private security company. There was an armed post that had to be filled for one night, they did not have an armed guard available for that night. The company ended up putting me on the walking post. It was in a ghetto strip mall. I am a white guy. There was no gun for me. I carried a 1911a1 replica for that shift. Well I just acted confident and hoped for the best. SOS security. 1980s. PS $2 an hour back then, early 1970s.

Tommy is 100% right on this. A lot of security officers /guards don't have good equipment. In 12 year of security in Chicago I seen the most ridiculous. Tommy love your videos extremely educational and helpful. if you ever saw the equipment I have. You wouldn't tell the difference between a police and the security except the patches I have

As a USAF Security policeman in the early 1970s I carried the 38 Special S&W M15 revolver. When I worked civilian security jobs I used an XD 45 at a Tennessee hospital and a Glock 17 RTF2 9mm for Securitas Security, an international company. I was armed better when I worked for a civilian security company than when I guarded nuclear weapons for the United States. Military ammo was 38 special 130 gr fmj @ 700 + fps mv.

My duty weapon is an IWI Masada. Excellent, reliable and comfortable to shoot. Not a single malfunction after nearly 2000 rounds. My duty ammo is Hornady Critical Defense. The Masada can be purchased new for around $450. I should also add that some FFLs have a first responder program that will lower the cost of the Masada even more. In many cases, Commissioned security officers qualify for those programs.

I found a Gen 3 Glock 17 at a pawn shop before I started working armed security about 6 years ago. I didn't know much about Glock and it's various models and generations at the time. Luckily I was able to rub shoulders with some experienced people in the industry and I also found your channel and you and you helped me out alot. I have some of your videos and statements in the back of my head on a daily basis and I have always had a good outcome with most issues I've encountered while on duty mostly do to you. Thank you brother!

One of my many jobs prior to getting into law enforcement I was an armed security guard for a couple years. I had already been a gun guy and owned several firearms so for me it was as simple as just buying a bianchi accumold duty rig and a safariland duty holster. I carried a gen1 S&W M&P 9mm as a guard, but man did I see some goofy stuff out there to include Hi Points and that Phoenix Arms pistol in the video in nylon thumb snap holsters on Walmart belts. Whenever I was on posts with other guards or switching out one for me occasionally someone would ask me where I got my stuff "cause it looks nice" and I would tell them where to get stuff at a decent price and I always would educate them about the screaming deals you could get on police trade ins. This was all around 2012-2014. As a police officer I caught the tail end of my agency's use of the Gen 3 Glock 22 and shortly after I hit the street solo from FTO in 2016 we transitioned to the Gen 4 Glock 21. Now my agency is slowly making the move to the Gen 5 Glock 17 MOS. As a cop I still run into security guards all the time, some super squared away, others not so much, but if I get asked about gear I'm always happy to tell them where and how to get good deals on things like police trade in equipment and guns. Been watching you for years Tommy keep up the good work.

Then 40cal Sig 229. I have a Glock19 as an off duty gun, and carried for 21 years now. 3rd Gen. Basic maintenance but reliable. Used for $300.

When I first began work as an armed security officer, i carried a Beretta 92 in a Blackhawk holster, while watching the local shops for a Glock. Ended up with a Glock 21 for duty use, because 9mm models were harder to come by during the US Armed Forces pistol trials of a few years ago. Multiple requalifications later, the .45ACP model has done what I needed it to just as well as a 17 in 9mm every time.

Take two? Then here's my comment again. 😆 The company I used to work for, the owner was a cop during the revolver days and had that issued to most of the armed positions. Luckily the site I was placed was for Lockheed Martin and we were issued Glocks. However, I don't think they (my employer) took security very seriously at all. Most of my coworkers were very overweight or old to the point they were shuffling instead of walking, and despite having armed positions they did not issue armor.

@freefieldtraining Thanks Tommy, as a new security guard I got my first security job with Allied Universal Security. I got a post where I showed up on my first day and stood outside in moderately comfortable temps for March in WI because of a lack of communication by the previous guard who was to train me. Getting ahold of my boss took me 45 minutes. I had locked (due to the stress of being at the right place but not being able to get in anywhere) my keys in the car and family was able to get to me and open the door and leave in that timeframe. The guard finally connects with me and opens the door. Your videos have provided me with more OTJ Training then that guard did (he was really unprofessional showing up out of uniform and ignoring the duties of the job wich was a simple patrol at the time.) as I only got 2 days of training with the post being a weekend night shift. I have another post that I work for 2 days as well on which my first day was take your child to work day (106 kids running around and I had a hour long crash course during the quiet time on the site by the guard who was with me for the first 6 hours that day, before the employee's showed up.) And I have recently been awarded an outstanding job award and small additional payment as a reward. My bosses have said that they have received multiple calls about me which usually means bad news but in my case they were to inform them that I am doing an amazing job which my bosses say is extremely rare. Anyway as a new guard with an associate's degree in Criminal Justice I have to say keep making these videos. They are helping me out by providing tips and tricks to make me better at my job and knowledge about items such as hi viz vests which I have applied to my own personal roadside emergency kit. Thanks for the knowledge and please don't stop making these. One question I have though is what flashlight would you recommend out of everything you have used for a security guard who has a site with dark rooms and high ceilings as well as decently lit exterior but may need some beam throw to get a good view of a exterior yard aisles for part storage so I can see more at a distance of probably 200 or 300ft and I will need to be able to see through tinted car windows with it as well. Thanks again and keep up the great videos they are very informative.

I bought a HP22A when I was 22 years old for plinking. Was $100 at a gun show, guy even tells me "It's a very safe gun!" On the third shot the magazine safety popped off during recoil, within 5 shots the magazine catch broke and I had to hold the magazine in while shooting with my pinky. After that though, man I fired 10,000 rounds through that thing through the 11-round magazine, you could dump the whole mag in under 3 seconds, and you might hit the target once or twice. My carry gun was the Taurus PT 24/7, gen 1. Cost $300ish at the time. Still own it and it's still reliable, but moved on to a Glock.

It's not only the security industry that has a problem with competency in firearms it's also in law enforcement. At least law enforcement in most cases pay for their officers equipment and training as opposed to the private industry who have to pay for their own training/kit. An affordable firearm that is made in the U.S. is the Rugers be that the security 9. I carried a Ruger P95 for a while and it was very reliable. An issue when purchasing a firearm as a duty weapon is ensuring there is a good holsters available.

... way back in the late 90's I was an armed security officer for a private company in my town and one day the boss asked me to stop by one of our accounts and give some pointers to a new guy hired up. When I got there, I seen this new guy, he was a elderly gent who said he just got this job for something to do. I looked over his duty belt and was shocked to see the pistol he had on his hip. It was a S&W model 442 snub nose revolver! I asked him if he had anything better to use for duty at home, his reply was that he never needed a gun in his life and when he got this job he gone to a gun store and asked for a handgun for personal protection, they sold him the snub! When I then asked where his spare ammo was located he laughed and said if he needed more than five (!) rounds he shouldn't he out on the streets! He asked what I used and shown him I had a Sig P220 pistol in .45 acp. He asked why I'd need such a big gun I told him that if you look like a cop and act like a cop the people around you will think that you are a cop ...

Started my security career with a S&W SD9VE. Not a bad gun, but as always with anything not glock, sig, etc, finding a level 3 holster for it wasnt easy. And it ended up being a Serpa level 3 holster. I hate seeing them as much as i hated owning one. But anyway, the SD9VE has since super inflated, and in my opinion you may as well buy a better gun. I now run a Gen 5 Glock 17 MOS with a Holosun HS407c and a Streamlight TLR-1 HL, inside a Rapid Force Duty holster. Say what you will about Alien Gear Holsters' edc holsters, i dont like them either. But their rapid force duty holster is definitely worth a try. Ive been in the dirt and rocks with it a few times and it held up just fine. Works better for me with smaller hands, and allows for a slightly faster draw than a safariland, for whatever thats worth. Coming in at around the same price or slightly cheaper than a safariland, its pretty much personal preference, i have no qualms with either holster. Anyways, hope this is helpful, stay safe out there everyone. Edit: Forgot to mention I have always ran Hornady Critical Duty ammo for Duty and personal defense outside of the job. I cringe everytime I see someone running target ammo for duty use.

Of course a bullet resistant vest. No cuffs, not making citizens arrests. No ASP, no training. Don't need a duty belt with stuff I'll never use. Most of the stuff can be used for CCW, different holster & smaller OC spray. A guard & CCW are private citizens. The role is to prevent & defend. It's like Observe & report. Defending is added when you report your observations & get attacked! I can't afford 1 set up for CCW & Another for Armed Guard!

In the State of Florida, the preferred calibers for security guards is .38 Special, .9mm and .380. I purchased a used S&W 686 for a little over $450.00. It was a steal considering it was used. I carried it on duty as a security officer(on my first day, I was issued a S&W model 10(it was well used and it was stamped U.S. Navy on the top of the top strap on the revolver. I had read that S&W had sold over 1,500 of these gun to the U.S. Navy during WW2. The gun belonged in a museum and I was afraid to fire it. I only dry fired it before I could pick up my gun at the shop). I have seen more Glocks in the used gun section of gun shops and pawn shops more so than any other handgun. The State of Florida would allow a private investigator, if licensed, to carry a .45ACP. These days , I see security officers with a Glock or a S&W M&P pistol. Me personally, I would probably carry a Sig 226 or a Beretta 92FS, with a triple mag pouch. Finding the right holster and belt is not for buying cheap or improvising a rig w a carpenter’s tool belt. I remember buying a Safariland nylon holster and speeds loader pouch and a couple of belt keepers. It was a solid rig for duty. Great informative video.

I don’t typically comment I’m more of a silent watcher of videos. But I always watch Tommy’s videos. I work private security in Washington I’ve done security and law enforcement both and you see some things including how they dress and what they wear etc. and I always see crappy holsters on these people. Sometimes they have quality pistols sometimes not. Save your money to buy quality. I carry a Glock 17 gen 5 in a safariland holster. I went through many safarilands because the gen 5 will not fit them all. I upgraded from gen 3 to a 4 and now I have the 5. I’ve used the Glock 22 when I first started security and the m&p when I worked for the state. But I have always used safariland duty holster and always will because I love them they feel secure and have never let me down. Stick with Glock if your new to the game is my suggestion. Go to a gun store or pawn shop most if not all in my area have layaway where you have 90 days to pay the gun off giving you time to come up with the money if that’s an issue. And most have pd trade ins for cheap just ask I even just picked up a p220 one of my favorite guns for cheap because it was a trade in. Hopefully that all helped or made sense to anyone reading this

Here in Sweden there’s no privately owned security firearms; armed guards are relatively rare (we have a complex system of guarding roles, and only a few have firearms authorised), and the Glock 17 is pretty much standardised across the industry for overt carry.
@awmperry
@awmperry Жыл бұрын
Exactly - we just don't have the same need. Here armed guards are almost exclusively at specially designated sites ("skyddsobjekt") like airports, power stations, government buildings and so on. Close protection officers are also occasionally authorised for firearms. Other than that, we generally just carry cuffs and expanding batons. There's been talk of asking some public order officers, but it's still up in the air. In the six years I've worked here, though, I've only needed to "use violence" three times - and that's just because legally speaking, putting a hand on someone's back to make them leave is technically a use of force. 😉

Why? Just curious. The manual of arms is less complicated than for a pistol especially when training non gun type newbies and women.

@jayteefishing1543 youtube won't let me link tot hints but if you look online at various police supply and surplus firearms supply houses you can find them. Now that glock 17's, 19's, and 45's along with m&p 45's are all becoming police surplus it is driving the price of 40 cal glocks down even further than they were a few years ago.

@@freefieldtraining I’ll look around more. That makes sense though man thanks. Supply with no demand. Right? Lol I love my 40 cal pistols and PCCs. I keep a Glock 22 on my battle belt with a 27 in between me and my plate carrier. I love .40 man it’s a great round. Plus, my back up weapon can take my primary weapons mags.
