I can't tell if it is or not from the video, but wouldn't the enclosure need to be pretty air tight to make the passive radiator sound even remotely good? Wouldn't it even kind of reduce the sound quality significantly by being basically 180 degrees out of sync (deconstructive interference)?

@Wipsplash
@Wipsplash 4 жыл бұрын
Passive radiator is used in a speaker box that is to small and does not have the air volume necessary to operate the speaker properly. When the speaker excursion goes in the box the passive radiator is pushed outwards allowing for additional air movement. It allows for better bass while having a tighter thump.

Rob, ex-car audio store owner and MECP installer here. The Ferrari is a pain but there are two options. The hard way, and the harder way. Doing an “amp bypass” and using existing wiring, soing an amp bypass and installing new wiring, while using the stock head and an aftermarket amp and speakers - or a complete swapout. Point is, you can use what you have if you bypass it depending on what you keep. Integrated security head units caused us to have to put the factory radio deep in the dash and leave it hooked up while installing a bypassed system parallel to it so the factory security and door locks still work. Honda started it in the late 90’s. We simply clipped the speaker wires, left the power to the head unit, and folded it back in the dash - putting the new radio in it’s place. Let me know if you need any help and I’ll counsel you on bypassing and keeping your factory security on any of your cars.

In many speaker systems there is a "speaker" without a coil behind it so it looks useless, but if it's in the same enclosure as an active subwoofer it moves according to the pressure variations in the enclosure, so it does actually work. It has been intentionally designed like that.

Rob, that top sub is a passive radiator. It relies on the energy of the second subwoofer to drive it. It works like a ported enclosure, but using less space. It isn't supposed to be wired, nor does it have a magnet or coil. It's a weighted foam panel with a foam or rubber suspension allowing it to move with the compression of air in the sealed box.

Hi Rob. Before you order the speakers you should remove the damaged one, and check the resistance of the speaker as you should get the same as the current speaker (the amp should also have the info). The problem with the speaker is the rubber on the speaker that connects the paper cone to the body has rotted. The one you initially thought was a speaker could be just a way to amplify the sound from the back of the sub-woofer. Most bookshelf and full size speakers will have at least one hole in the body of the speaker for this purpose. I am guessing that some Italian bloke thought it would not be stylish enough to have a hole in the trim and decided to instead use a fake speaker.

I'd go to parts express and work with those guys to spec drivers that will work there. You can't just throw any sub in any hole and hope it will work. And PE has very reasonable prices. They also have passive radiators, which may be required there to make the T-S parameters play nice. A single sealed driver and block off may also work. Regardless, you're in over your head to just buy drivers and throw them in there.

It’s called a passive subwoofer meaning it isnt powered. Passive speakers are used on sealed enclosures and they move because of the change in pressure in the enclosure as the powered sub moves. It’s usually a money saving thing though and completely unacceptable for $1,850 let alone on a damn Ferrari!

What you touched in the car is actually a passive radiator... It is not a speaker by itself but works together with another speaker, especially smaller ones, to give them more surface area and move more air. The other one looks like the surround dry rotted due to heat. Hope you get something that makes you happy to replace it. You might have problems putting two speakers in a box only designed for one and a passive radiator. Experiment with one vs two.

As an additional point to the passive radiator comments, if you now decide to buy another subwoofer make sure you also buy A MATCHING PASSIVE RADIATOR. If your new sub is ill-fitted to the existing radiator, not only will it sound worse than with a matching one, but it will actually sound worse than if you simply took a piece of MDF and sealed the upper hole. There are good resources on what fits what on the web, and it generally just comes down to matching volume displacement, mass and resonant frequencies.

That looks on par with the factory speakers I pulled out of my 2013 Camaro poverty spec base model, all cracked and falling apart after just 7 years. The other issue is that passive radiators create a sound wave that is 180 degrees out of phase from the other driver in the enclosure. You're increasing your efficiency by using energy that would otherwise be mostly wasted, but at certain frequencies, those sound waves cancel each other out. Not a fan of passive setups. If you have room for two drivers and can vent them, just use two drivers running in the same phase.
@ReviewingModsOfGames
@ReviewingModsOfGames 4 жыл бұрын
As previously said, the upper one is a passive radiator. It's basically the equivalent of a port in other subwoofer systems, but can be more compact. The foam surrounds like that are known for going bad, though that is kind of new for that to be happening. They can be replaced if you're dedicated to keeping it original. It also looks as though that subwoofer is a dual voice coil thing, so the amplifier is likely a stereo amplifier and it mixes the channels together at the speaker. Radio Shack did that with some of their passive subwoofers, to name an example, but it is odd to see an active one doing that.

That sub is a dual voice coil (DVC) unit. You'll need to find another one like it, plus a passive radiator, or just replace the sub and passive with a pair of regular single-coil drivers. Measure the resistance of the coils on the old sub with an ohmmeter. A 4-ohm nominal coil will measure around 2.5 to 3.5 ohms, and an 8-ohm nominal coil will measure around 5.5 to 7.5 ohms. The replacement driver(s) should have the same nominal rating. You can also have the original drivers refoamed, or try it yourself. That'll preserve the original sound.

A passive radiator is a legit component for a subwoofer enclosure. It served a similar function to a port and can be tuned with weight to work quite well. In some ways it's better than a port in that stuff can't get inside the enclosure. Having said all of that, yes, it's a shit system and you got hosed.

so that top "subwoofer" is actually called a passive radiator it helps with bass production in smaller subwoofers. if you wanted to you could get two subwoofers and connect them together for more bass or you would just buy i believe a 6.5" passive radiator and a 6.5 subwoofer. (watts to very depending on the stock system so make sure to try and get one rated for at least 200-300 watts so you dont over power it)

the top was a passive radiator, which is required for any subwoofer enclosure. The subs move a lot of air, and take a lot of power, which is why there was also an additional amplifier for it. As for them charging $1,800 for it, that's because it had the Ferrari name on it. Anywhere else it would have been around a buck fifty.

Phillips Magnavox used them for a while. It's basically a baffle designed to give expansion to an enclosure for deeper bass. Downside is that they really don't make it any louder than it was.

As a bunch of other ppl have said it's a passive radiator, I prefer them to a ported box. You get the tunability of a port (by changing the weight) without the windy port noise

The second "speaker" was a bass reflex damper it is used like a port but in a sealed box. You have seen them in things like those cove speakers. The thing up top they call a subwoofer us just a damper.

A passive radiator should be 1/3rd the size of a speaker. That's why enclosed speakers have radiated mesh but exposed subwoofers have a hole to allow them an airflow. The above "speaker" was just to justify an aesthetic. Basically what you bought was a Daewoo with a beautiful engine

You need to meter the speaker to test the Ohms or look up what the Ohm replacement is, then get the speaker that's a woofer not a coax speaker with a tweeter! If you replace the speaker with different Ohm it might blow the amp!

The top is called a passive radiator. The bottom would be an actual speaker. A passive radiator allows the speaker box's internal dimensions to be dynamic depending on the type of bass required. Fast bass like techno would need a smaller internal size versus deeper slower bass requires a larger box. Usually the passive radiator is a larger diameter as to not over extend it's throw.

Like everyone else said, the top one is a passive radiator and after a quick search on Ferrarichat, it seems that this kind of failure is fairly common in these speakers because of higher humidity since they have paper cones. One person suggested having them rebuilt as many rebuilders will use better materials what what was originally used which can improve the sound quality as a result

Many years ago I had a 1990 Toyota sedan with passive radiators. The ‘live sound’ option definitely wasn’t $1800. Interesting to note is Mercedes uses a smaller version of the sub as a centre speaker in the Sprinter.

The top driver just looks like a passive radiator. Doing this allows them to get better bass response out of the single subwoofer below it. The air movement from the subwoofer in the enclosure moves the passive radiator as if it were powered. (Very basic explanation.)

Also, please verify the impedance of the stock woofer setup to purchase something that will work in the setup. Please don't put Boss audio in the Ferrari, it's literally the bargain basement brand in car audio. Like THE lowest possible "upgrade" from stock.

I think that not a speaker speaker is a passive radiator, it expands and gives room for the subs to "breathe" it’s what people call subwoofers on their portable speakers such as the kove ones

The top one (as someone else already said) is a Passive Radiator. The bottom one (which actually IS the subwoofer) you're probably better off sending to an audio shop and having them redo the rubber surround (the part that deteriorated). You'll make sure that impedance stays matched and also that other measurements (Qt, VAS, etc.) stay matched up for the enclosure size. Impedance is the one I'd be most worried about though (that maybe ferrari uses a non standard impedance sub and if so, something mismatched could potentially damage the amp(s)). You should be able to get that surround redone for probably $30 and even the whole speaker rebuilt (voice coil redone as well) for under $100 if necessary. And then you can also claim it's still all F original..

The reason the passive radiator fell off is something call foam rot, after years the foam will degrade and eventually if you push its limits the foam surround will peel off or fly off and will literally disintegrate when pinching it or stepping on it. Which is why it sounded sh*t when you played music

Rob, at $1900 for the upgraded HiFi (even though it sucks) is a bargain for a new Ferrari. The Bose HiFi option on my 430 was $7400. It’s called the Ferrari Tax, which I’m sure you know from the 488, has only gotten worse. I read the other day Ferrari makes $94,000 average profit per car. Pretty easy when just adding Apple Car Play is a $4000 option.

13:29 loool yeah that's supposed to be connected to the outer lip, speakers not gunna move much air if there's no seal. That passive radiator was probably only intact because it wasn't moving at all. I've seen blown and rotted speakers before, but that's crazy blown there's almost no trace of the lip left 😂
