Why do you laugh when you’re tickled? Scientists at Humboldt University of Berlin are studying rats to try and solve the longstanding mystery. Given the right conditions, and enough back and belly tickling by a researcher, ratscan come to associate a researcher's cotton gloved hand with the sensation of being tickled. Tickling makes them “giggle,” albeit in frequencies too high for human ears to hear. The rats develop a fondness for the human hands, chasing their scurrying fingers in circles. The scientists observe the rat ticklishness, and track how their brain processes the sensation, hoping to uncover clues about the laugh-inducing feeling.

I know that people's first reaction to this is generally going to be dismissive, and I don't really blame people for that. However, when you actually think about this for a bit longer you realize that this is actually a major discovery. It shows that our need for play has biological roots, and not just something that emerged through the advancement of culture and socialization (not to say that culture has no part in its development.)
@thefatherinthecave943
@thefatherinthecave943 3 жыл бұрын
It’s really weird people think play is exclusively human or animals we’ve domesticated. Many animals play to establish general rules like how hard they can play, who is too aggressive to be played with, how to hunt and social order. I assume many games children play like hide and seek, tag, and make believe establish something similar. Hide and seek teaches children how to look for things and hide, tag teaches endurance and make believe encourages creativity and storytelling.

Yes. Its yet another disproval of the blank slate theory(that everything is upbringing and environment and there is no instinct or base personality). Yet professors of the most prestigious universities still teach things based on the blank slate theory, such as critical gender theory.

I think only a certain kind of person believes that animals don't have personalities or biological behaviors besides "instinct". Psychologists and biologists have been aware for a couple of decades now that brains are coded through hormones, and that all human behaviors are also the result of biology. Ergo, as animals also have brains and hormones, animals feel as well.
@Delinae
@Delinae 3 жыл бұрын
@@soulmask2781 your confusing what's natural vs what's socially constructed. Critical gender studies doesn't say having gender identity is made up. They say specific gender expectations are made up. Similarly, you can tickle rats to play and they will expect to get tickled. If you wrestle with them they will expect wrestling.

My 5 boys are very young so they're just starting to feel safe around people, and they seem to like being tickled. I played this video and they all came over to the side of the cage and stared lol. They also seem to realize I'm "deaf" because I talk to them a lot and they're very vocal within a range I can hear. Not sure how they learned that, but I've never had a more vocal group. They recognize different words- they learn faster than any dog I've ever worked with. Rats are amazing.

@klm20079

Hmm if you got a degree or hobby/interest in any kind of stuff, you can do your own research one things like this. Most of this kind of rat experiments are for us humans because humans don't or need something before they co-operate with a experiment. Like a Dutch man working on the behaviors of animals etc; One day hey was drinking his coffee and watching outside of his workplace to watch; people/nature etc and saw a male duck while flying hit the glass window of his workplace and died lying on the ground, but then a other male duck appears and fucking the other male duck. So the man had found a new behavior in Duck: Gay-Necrophilia. That day and win a noble. To answer your question make your own job by be creative and think outside the box.

I own 23 Rats. Can confirm that they love not only tickling, but love cuddles, kisses, if you sing to them, olay certain kinds of music for them, and play with them. Rats are very social, affectionate, and loving animals. I have one rat that I take on adventures with me. She has a house compartment on my backpack, with easy access in and out, and she will usually stay on my shoulder, and observe everything that I do. She 3specialy love kayaking and has learned what the word means and will get excited when I say it. It means she will get to kayak with me, and have the freedom of roaming the craft as i drift a lovely river. She even has a special bed, with a rain fly on the front of the kayak where she can lay and view the world around her, as we drift. She also enjoys car rides, and being with me. I encourage anyone interested in small animals, to adopt a Rat. They come in so many beautiful varieties, and all have unique personalities. I also study them. And have concluded that they are capable of thought & decision making. There are also various studies supporting this. Rats are wonderful & intelligent animals, requiring intellectual stimulation. Adopt one :)

How do you know that these particular rats are kept in small cages? Perhaps they are well treated. It's not good to assume. Plus if those rats were suffering such a condition, their energy and eagerness would be much lower than the video shows. Remember that every lab is different, and each carries out its experiments and research uniquely.

I love rats, I rescued 2 a couple of years back... at first they were very traumatised from their previous owner. They were shy and didn't like cuddles, they would bite if anyone apart from me put their hand in their cage. After having them for 2 months, I had trained them to be tame and friendly things. I used to tickle them lots, they adored it. They would cuddle me if I was sad and then eventually respond to their names: Sylvia and Davina. I would never harm any animal, every creature has a place in my heart.

Scientists don't need to study a cure for cancer, people just need to start living less toxic lifestyles. It's boggles my mind that people eat junk, drink alcohol and coffee and don't exercise and then complain they don't understand why they got cancer and other illnesses. All cancer is is a build up of toxicity in the body. We can prevent it ourselves, we don't need tests on animals to cure a disease easily prevented.

In all technicality, the researcher didn’t do the equivalent of scratching it. It was too light- Scratching it would give a different response (ex, trying to groom the researcher’s hand) Or at least, that’s what I’ve noticed from personal experience.

People joke how this isn't important research, but I beg to differ. It shows that rats operate on a more similar emotional level than we previously thought, meaning showing these animals more kindness is the morally correct response.

i have owned 6 rats. they are brilliant. never keep a rat alone, for when it is without your attention, it will be depressed. always adopt rats in pairs so they have a playmate when you are at school or work, as they literally will miss you when you are gone. i loved my rats but you must research and have thorough understanding on how to maintain their environment and manage their health. husbandry is just as key with rats, because they are up there with the intelligence of young dolphins and are much smarter than the average house canine. you must understand what rats want and need. they are very intelligent and do not need litter training, they will instantly figure out what you would like them to do if you know how to condition them. they also do not need to be bathed. your rats will clean themselves at least three to five times a day, and they need a partner of the same gender to accomplish this and be truly comfortable in their environment. rats will suffer if lonely, and can easily be driven to insanity and perform self-mutilation if you are not taking care of them. treat your rats like your friends, or do not get rats period. mice =/= rats. mice are smart but very, very difficult to train in comparison to rats. also do not adopt rats from different litters if you can help it. if you must do this, seperate them temporarily with cagewire of some kind until they adapt to one another and it will be easy to observe whether they will bond or if they will not. please read a book before adopting rats. they are the best possible small house pet. i loved my rats and they live about 2-3 years and are my #1 recommended house pet but are not fit for anyone under the age of 16 in my personal opinion. neglect will cause your rats to be displeased and forgetting to water them is subjecting them to torture, for example. hamsters are not like rats, rats need to be handled with equal care but are much more docile and i prefer them to hamsters and even guinea pigs. please take very good care of your rats if you watch this video and immediately go find a new pet. there are good videos on how to do it but watch them beforehand please. rats are not for everyone, and do not get mice; get rats or you will be sorry. they are much harder to train even for professionals.

Trouncer I bought a rat because of pity. And I had already bought a cage because I wanted to get 3 rats like a month before I saw her. I was just in time to save her because she was alone and scared and the cage she was in had nothing in it so she couldn't hide and she couldn't cuddle with other rats. She's still very scared and shy but she's getting better. I also bought two other rats so she isn't alone anymore.

I think it's because they spread disease. I'm also less disgusted in them since I got a hamster and they look similar ish. Hamster are really clean tho.
