Fun trivia: Kulan Gath is one of those characters Marvel created as part of a licensed property that they later incorporated into the main Marvel universe. He was originally created as a Conan villain. Conan. As in, the Barbarian. The arc that introduced him into the main Marvel universe also had Mary Jane Watson briefly become a reincarnated Red Sonja, which in a just universe would have become permanent.

This retrospective is really fun

When I first listened to this episode and got to the butterfly effect thing caused by eating the last danish and my mind decided to come up with how that happened. It turned into a wonderfully convoluted story involving a pregnant military woman forced to go look for a danish at a different store, noticing and preventing a mugging and thus saving a few kids, one of those kids would grow up to be a superhero, and that superhero would inadvertently do several things that would make earth more well prepared to fight the alien invasion, including getting wealthy businesses to sponsor superheroes and get them better equipment, and saving a member of that alien race who turned traitor on his own kind and gave earth a lot of advance warning. It was a fun thought experiment.

This series was one of the first comics I remember ever reading, with such an awesome premise how could I resist and it did not dissapoint

So basically, in a cast filled with alternate universe characters... Magik is basically the mainstream Magik, but has *more* of a reason for how murderous and evil she is.

For some reason, I have always kinda liked the character Holocaust. Name is iffy, but damn he is sometimes hilarious. His daddy issues with Apocalypse are fun, he has that snarky comedy sense but looks like a doomsday villain for the ages.

I really liked Winick's final story with the evil Iron Man fighting the Inhumans. I'm also shocked to learn that I enjoyed a Chuck Austen tale as I think that Hyperion's story arc is compelling and has one of the best resolutions from that era of comics.

Awesome restrospective! Even though I've read all the Exiles comics and know all this stuff I still enjoy watching it since you present it in an interesting way. It's still just as enjoyable to listen to as your other retrospectives which had all new information for me. Great job Linkara!

Havok as the Nexus of All Realities is actually a continuity call-back to the Mutant X series that concluded around the same time Exiles was beginning. In that book, the 616 Alex Summers inadvertently traveled to a parallel reality where he basically came to inhabit the body of his doppelganger there and, later, absorbed the Nexus of All Realities into himself to stop the Goblin Queen from getting control of it and thus gaining access to the multiverse. Which is *absolutely* convoluted, but it's still a neat piece of continuity to recall for a book like this one. It shows that the writers were paying attention to each other.

I'm so glad I watched this 2 part retrospective. I'm going to get this entire run. This seems like a lot of fun and minor odd things aside, Is one hell of an adventure.

There was another X-Men series later on called X-Treme X-Men with a very similar premise. In that series Dazzler had a team of alt universe X-Men hunting down evil multiverse Xaviers under the command of a Xavier head in a jar. That Xavier even had a second more brutal team running around under Dazzlers nose.

This is the first time I've heard of the Exiles and despite some of the story's flaws I rather like it. I look forward to part three.

I love it! This was one of the first comic runs I ever read and it's still one of my favorites. I'm glad someone's spotlighting it, it doesn't get half the attention it deserves.

So, based on his color scheme, I’m guessing that ‘The Spider’ was a version of Pete who somehow bonded with the Carnage Symbiote. If that is the case, then I wonder how strong this version of him is. I’m pondering this because, when superior Spider-Man bonded with the Venom Symbiote for a short bit, he was strong enough to literally backhand Thor away from himself, whilst also fighting the rest of the Avengers with seemingly little problem; so imagine how strong Spider-Man is when he’s bonded to a Symbiote that can make a normal person, who doesn’t even exercise regularly, stronger than both Spidey and Venom, who’s host is a guy that can bench 700 lbs, put together. I could be remembering that fight wrong though, except for the Thor thing, I remember that pretty clearly.

Been getting into JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Currently in the famous Stardust Crusaders Part) which invoke this in Parts 6 -8 and a game called Eyes over Heaven (which may or may not be Cannon). But the point is that even Japan has explored this concept (Kingdom Hearts, Kamen Rider Decade (which was done poorly), Super Sentai was this (until they realized they needed an explanation as to how they are all meeting each other for team ups), the Clamp Multiverse (Featuring XXXholic being a key one) there's more but I can't think of them. I'm liking the twists and turns here.

Postmortem character development worked for Homer. Although on a more serious note; it's not actually a bad strategy depending on what you are going for, it can lend a lot of weight and emotion to events that, had they come before the character died, might have felt more meandering and pedestrian.

I just realized, the original Excalibur actually did something very similar to this, the Cross-Time Caper. The team, Captain Britain, Meggan, and the only survivors of the X-Men (so they thought) - Nightcrawler, Shadowcat, and Phoenix, get sent on a trip across various parallel Earths. I loved Excalibur, and wished they would take part in X-book crossovers. Then Marvel granted my wish, and screwed Excalibur.

This is a great retrospective but I can't help but feel you missed an opportunity at the 6:13 segment. You could have totally read one of Dr. Doom's monologues or even a simple cry of, "RICHA~AAAAARDS!" in the Drunken Tony Stark voice!

Putting aside my feelings on the X-Men and their spinoff books, Exiles dose give us unique insight into the Marvel multiverse, although that too kind of gives me pause to go out and read it. For me, alternate reality stories are kind of like tales that involve time travel. Namely that the quality for them can be hit or miss. For example, for every "Mirror Mirror" (Star Trek: The Original Series), there is "In A Mirror Darkly" (Star Trek: Enterprise). It really depends on whether or not I care about the characters.

Yeah, Judd Winick has his strengths. Things like this and Under the Red Hood are a bit more his speed.

As much as I dislike X-Men these days, I've always been interested in Exiles. this is a pretty fun retrospective

1:59 I'd also argue his Green Lantern run was pretty damn good. I know Ron Marz gets a lot of the credit for making Kyle Rayner into a likable character despite the circumstances, but I enjoyed Winnick's run with Kyle just as much if not more than Marz's. I've never gotten around to getting the last few issues of his run so maybe it all falls apart in those issues, but up to around #154 or so it's a highlight from that era of DC for me, which says a lot considering that was during the height of the DC Golden Age. 10:10 I wonder if the whole "Havok is the multiverse Nexus" thing has something to do with Howard Mackie's Mutant X series, where 616 Havok was the leader of an alternate universe X-Men. Knowing Mackie, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the source of the convoluted BS; just moving Havok to an alternate universe convoluted that character up more than he needed to be (and Mackie had already turned Havok into a mess by the end of his X-Factor run), as you saw in Austen's Uncanny run when he brought him back. I know that series has it's fans, but I've never cared much for Mackie. His X-Factor run killed that book, and his Spider-man work was decent at the best of times, so even though I'm a hardcore X-Men fan and a bit of a completist, I'll probably never get around to reading Mutant X. Now that I think about it, while Austen gets the most flack of the X-writers for bad stories and messing up the books, I think Mackie is the one writer who's actually done the most damage to the X-books and characters. Seriously, if you thought Austin's Uncanny was bad, just try to make it through Mackie's X-Factor; it goes from a decent series under the previous writer (in comparison to what's to come) to awful within a couple of issues under Mackie, gets so bad that it almost becomes so-bad-it's-good for about an issue and a half, and then plunges so far into garbage territory that it loops back around to just plain god awful again before cancellation. At least Austen made Juggernaut interesting for the first time in years, tried to get more manga inspired artists on Uncanny to capitalize on the anime boom at the time (something I'm surprised Marvel and DC gave up on pretty quickly despite anime and manga still being waaaay more popular in the US from then to now than standard American superhero comics and huge crossover hits like My Hero showing a hybrid series has potential in the US and the Japanese market that US publishers have been trying to crack for years...) and his bad stories are mostly bad in a fascinating, trainwreck that's oddly hilarious kind of way. I don't think Mackie ever did anything close to that good during his time on the X-books, he just wrote the worst kind of nonsensical plots, the boring kind, while butchering characters like Havok (he really got the worst of it) that he flip-flopped from good to evil every other issue while inserting roughly 3,000 new subplots every issue while never finding time to pay a single one off. Plus Jeff Matsuda drew most of that run, and while personally I like the more Madureira, anime influenced style he had transitioned to by the time he got to X-Factor, it's not nearly as refined as his 2000s anime-esque style and rarely do the pencils not look rushed and drawn the last day before the deadline. Then a young Duncan Rouloue takes over art duties for the second half of Mackie's run and... Let's just say like any young artist, he needed more time to refine his craft and style. But a handful of people tell me Mutant X is decent, so I don't know, maybe he's just better when he can write his version of characters in a universe of his own creation.

You know, while there are plenty of dimension-hopping stories Exiles could be compared to, the idea of people being plucked up and put onto a team against their will, fighting so they can return to their normal lives, with a changing roster to replace characters who leave the story, made me think of Gantz. For other reasons that I won't mention in case I spoil it for someone!

Happy to see this new episode, but Seriously Linkara, your voice was basically gone for the last half of this video. Your health comes first, it's okay to skip a week. We'll all understand.

you know. as interesting as having all these alternate realities is great. but I think it would be really cool if they went to versions of the world where instead of just having different decisions being made, they went to universes where everything is like other forms of media. like a world where they are in a TV show or one where they all have stands or one where the marvel godzilla combined with the venom symbiote. it feels like they could have done something incredibly ridiculous instead of just a few differences. but this still works.

with the introduction of the multiverse in the Marvel cinematic universe will we either see a cinematic adaptation of Exiles or even a televised one would make a great movie experimenting with the big range of universes out there in the Marvel brand

Im sort of disappointed you didnt look into the Uncanny X-Men Tie in more, it actually was a continuation of a really good alternate reality book, Mutant X, where Havok fell into an alternate reality, the book was quite solid and had a good conclusion, it was byfar my favorite issues, since I was missing mutant X, at the time. Exiles was I guess the replacement for Mutant X. Oh and usually Manthing is the Nexus of realities, but in the Mutant X Reality Manthing (who was that realities Dr Strange) passed the powers onto havok.
