I think i remember quite a few years ago Randy posting some pictures of a pretty prolific area that they logged and just left the fall and bucked laying in the woods in one area..he posted pictures of some pretty awesome clusters..in my experience some areas when they log portions and just leave smaller stands intact ,it seems to change the whole weather pattern and eco systems so that even the old growth patches that were left never produce much anymore ..thanks for the video ..I always watch them..

You are right GA, that was probably this patch. The root rot was really bad in this area so the timber was of little value. We have those photos somewhere on a corrupt hard drive, maybe worth restoring someday. It was more prolific than anything Randy had found in the Nass, or anywhere else in the interior, which is rare for the Island. As you say, the weather patterns and ecosystem has been changed significantly in this area. During a good season there were clusters counting well into the hundreds, growing so tightly packed that the buttons became square rectangle shaped because they were touching so densely. Hard to go back, but still beautiful none the less. Thanks for watching.

Great content. This is how many excursions go. You don't always hit pay dirt but, taking it all in is a large part of the experience.

Believe it or not I liked this video more than others simply because of your explanations and the family history you shared. The story of who you guys are and what you do as a family is so incredible. Thanks for sharing this with us!

It was a once in a lifetime Matsutake patch. Was very sad the day we discovered it was gone but at least a small amount is left. Planning to do some work helping spread mushroom spores in the remaining trees next Autumn.@@margueritemitchell1829

I read paper(s?)about birch fungi and how the fruiting changed as the trees grew. It was clear fell and they tracked what fungi fruited over the years as the birch grew. I don't remember the details, as not relevant as I live in New Zealand which doesn't have birch forests and a very limited number of birch / exotic mycorrhizal species. But there was a clear pattern of as the birch aged, the species changed. From memory birch boletes were one of the more mature ones. I am hoping the birch tree patch I have planted and thrown old birch boletes into will soon fruit. Say all that, to say that I suspect the mycelium is still present, but given the trees determine who gets the carbo's from photosynthesis it is likely that pine buttons you are after don't get the sugars until the tree is mature. Likely because it is more adapt to mining nutrients than the other species. This is all conjecture of course as so little work has been done in this space.

Over many years the mushroom harvest is worth more than the timber. Humans are short sighted. BC is one big tree farm now.

In certain fall mushroom patches, without a doubt. If we were getting the true kg value of matsutake buttons (price in Japan), some patches have the potential to out weight the timber value in a single year.
