After several quotes for $13-16, 000 from the pros, we're about to take on drywalling our basement. I have been binge watching your videos... Your voice makes me feel like I can cut out my nightly glass of wine ;) I am still anxious about the project, but so happy I've found your channel!!! You explain everything so well, and in such a detailed way, I loved all of the drywall videos. "You can do this", may be overly generous placed faith in our DIY abilities, haha, but we'll let you know how the basement turns out! Thanks Leah!

Dear Leah, I want to share with you a trick that I learned from a Brazilian plaster guy to cover those corners so the tiny holes from the corner bits don't show after the first coat. Place drywall tape one eight before the corner and that it will give you a nicer first coat. I just did a room like so and man, I loved it.

Hi Leah, Thanks much for your very clear videos. I am finishing a first-time project, a basement room with basic framing and DW. This comment relates to corner-bead installation. In my first attempt (with DW screws) the bead was not properly aligned with the corner, some DW screw heads and some parts of the bead flange protruded through the mud on one side. I found that the DW screws tend to pull the bead flange to one side or another during installation. I pulled the installation off while still wet. After some thought I decided I could control the bead alignment simply and accurately. The corner bead is 1-1/4" from bead to flange edge on each side. We want the bead to be aligned top to bottom on a diagonal some distance out from the intersecting surfaces of the two drywall sheets (virtual corner). The further out the bead is the more likely the fasteners and flanges will be concealed, but the more mud is required to fill the corner. To insure alignment I used 4d 1-1/2" nails located 1-1/8" in from the opposing DW surface, four equal spaced from top to bottom of the wall on either side.That 1/8" offset means the bead is displaced outward on the diagonal about 3/16" from the virtual corner, with a gap on either side slightly less than 1/8" (the gap that appears if you put a DW knife against the bead and DW surface, what the mud has to fill). When the corner bead is applied to the corner it stops against the alignment nails and is perfectly aligned and positioned. I used the same nail type to fasten the bead, working up and down from the center alternatively on either side using the holes closest to the flange edge. I was then able to proceed with confidence to mud the corners as you demonstrated and I really like the results. Installing the alignment nails takes only a few minutes, and can save a lot of grief for an inexperienced amateur. The 1/8" was my conservative reaction to the failed attempt. But 1/16" offset might be just fine, with less mud. The main thing is reproducibility compared to a freehand procedure.

Couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get a clean edge, must've done 6 coats. Don't know why it took so long for me to figure it out, once I watched this it finally clicked: leave the overspill on the corner edge after the top coat and just sand lightly when dry till it's smooth. I was scraping all the mud off the corner to clean it up wet every time, and so not getting good coverage and creating more lines. Thanks Leah!

Hi there, very good video, very informative. I also think it's great that you answer people's questions in the comments section. That's extra helpful and a great practical use for KZfaq. I just want to point out one small thing found at 2:47 in the video, and it's NOT meant to criticize like many commenters do, just to clarify. Drywall screws are NOT self tapping screws as stated. I just wouldn't want someone to get sent to the store (or something like that) for "4 inch self tappers" and come back with drywall screws, or a similar screw. You can always tell a self tapping screw by the fact that near the point, the threads will turn into vertically opposed "cutting blades". The easiest way for someone who doesn't know who's reading this to spot one would be to just say that the threads don't go all the way to the tip of the screw, but change just before the point to "something else". I can see you're clearly knowledgeable, and probably know the difference, this is more for the viewers.
@seejanedrill
@seejanedrill 9 жыл бұрын
Dave Carsley Hi Dave, first of all, thank you for your comment. I absolutely understand how the drywall screw vs self-tapping screw thing could be confusing to our viewers, and I appreciate the classy way in which you pointed this out. The thing is, there is a self-tapping drywall screw on the market that doesn't look like other self-tapping screws; it just looks like a drywall screw. The Grabber drywall screws are all self-tapping. That said, you made a very good point, as we don't want people to just go to the store and ask for a self-tapper, because they do want drywall screws. Thanks again! Regards, Leah

I watched five different videos on how to do this - but your video finally explained it in a DIY fashion that makes sense to me. You should be teaching this to students. Thank you! I do have a question: Can I get a corner bead that has a wider flange? I replaced a window and there is a 1" gap where the old plaster was cut and I need to fill that in somehow. It's uneven and narrow enough that I'm not sure drywall sections would fit. An extra wide corner bead would solve it. Thanks again, Dale

Leah, I watch your videos & really enjoy it when you say: "You can do this." --- I'm 41 & since I was 9 years old I wanted to help my single mom by hanging a painting she wanted to hang, but she would say to me: "You can't do it. You are not a carpenter. You will ruin the house. You will ruin your hands." --- So now I don't talk to her. I'm on my bed all day for 7 years while the narcissist wife works. --- When our 9 year old son comes home I get him to cook & to do some carpentry with me so that he will be a useful adult. We have to do everything before his mom gets home at 7pm. My wife has said: "I don't want our son to be a carpenter. I don't want him to hurt his hands." --- Your videos have opened up a beautiful world for my son & for me. Thank you for your encouragement.

Thanks, Daniel. I'm glad to be an encouragement to you (and your son!) As a woman who spent many years working on construction sites, I understand what it is like to face obstacles to pursuing your dreams. Keep the faith...you can do it! :)

Thank you so much for these videos! Your clear instruction and great empowering attitude is wonderful! I need to start a wall at an outside corner, but have encountered the following- and am wondering what your take on this would be: "Avoid tapered edges on outside corners. If you hang a sheet of drywall with the tapered edge along an outside corner, it will be hard to install the corner bead accurately. The corner of the bead will lie too low, making it difficult to cover with joint compound. The solution is to place cut edges along an outside corner (right way)."

very helpful, thanks. this task can be frustrating for the inexperienced! pesky air bubbles tend to show up in my mud. perhaps the 2nd and 3rd coat will fill those in
