As a teenager in high school the highlight of my weekend was going to 7/11 to buy a Slurpee and Dreamcast Magazine. It always had the best demo discs with it. Luckily I still saved a few of them on my shelf. It was the peak of gaming for me.

Great idea for a video. Used to get Dreamcast magazine and PlayStation magazine with demo discs all the time. Back when you’re a kid and can’t afford new games all the time demo discs were key. Used to get a lot of play out of them. My favourite was a ps1 demo with tekken2 and twisted metal on it.

Yes!!! Miss the days of demo disk. A demo disk is what made me love Metal Gear Solid. I thought the game looked dumb n my moms bfs kid said,No!!!!!! This game is badass, while we are 8 years old lol Played it n played it about 100 more times till I bought it. And Metal Gear Solid was the first ever game that I bought w my own money. Remember I didnt have enough so my buddies mom threw me a 5 bill 😂 Ahhh the memories 😊 What demo disk are all about! Glad you dudes are doing this.

I remember one night my brother in law was spending the night at my house and I had a PS1 demo with Cool boarders (not sure if it was 1or 2) but at that time I had (and still own) Green Day’s Nookie CD so we listened to “when I come around” on repeat while playing the cool boarders demo for hours, to this day we talk about that night 😂😂it was just one hill but we had so much fun listening to that song while going down pulling tricks.

Tokyo Xtreme Racer is simulating the Japanese street race scene. You are supposed to drive on the somewhat open world freeways (based on real freeways in japan), and you challenge AI drivers by flashing your headlights at them. A demo really won't give you a good idea of the game loop.

The DC generator vol 1 demo that came with the console had an effect on me back in 99. I remember being really hyped after the Bass Fishing and HOTD2 demos, among others. I had never even thought of a fishing game before that, but that demo sold me on buying that game and it's still one of my DC favorites 25 years later. Never subscribed to DC magazine, so never had any other DC demos.

Demo discs became a thing during the period where my parents started buying me a ton of games instead of just renting them. So I would give my demo discs to friends who loved them. Getting PS1 demos in official playstation magazine and also at Pizza Hut is a fond memory.

Demo discs are great. Actually got to test out multiple games and just have fun. You got to see the gaming magazines come to life, even if just a snippet of the game. Loved getting demo discs, whether packed in with a console, included with a gaming magazine, or included with a full retail game you had. Seeing what the other company had in the works or was already released, you still got to try it out 1st. I forget which Dreamcast demo disc I have. I don't have many demo discs, but I do have the experience and joy of playing them when I was younger.

Love the idea for this series, a couple years ago I bought an untested lot on ebay that had every single OG Xbox demo disc for super cheap and surprisingly they all worked! Ripped them all then flipped them for a lot of money lol

I remember demo discs. My friend had one; if my memory serves me well, it was definitely for the Gamecube and it consisted of Soul Calibur 2, Sonic Adventure, Viewtiful Joe, and Billy Hatcher. Very nostalgic.

To be fair you got these demos monthly and it was just whatever companies had recent or upcoming releases. I subscribed to the magazine back in the day, even got a few back issue demo discs free from Eb games that no one wanted. But there were a lot of games I sought out at the time because I played the demo. Really expands your horizons rather than sticking to a single genre or game like I feel a lot of us do today for comfort and safety from the industry. I'm sure every dreamcast owner has tried Sega Swirl. Chances are if you have any of the demo discs it was included. I was never sure what the best strategy was. But I liked building up a big wall of one color and popping it. I suppose the health bars on tokyo street racer do initially throw you into thinking its a combat game for someone that never played it before. It was a very innovative new kind of racer for the time.

My only real exposure to Demo Discs was through Playstation (and recently Xbox), and where I didn't have a Dreamcast (until only like a little over a month ago) - I was actually unaware of them having Demo Discs as well, although I should of known they did. I can't say it's my favorite demo disc, but the one that comes to mind was the one that had Kagero: Deception 2 (for PS1) and Thrasher (if I remember the name correctly - in the demo you had some killer tunes for the time including "King of Rock"). But if I had a Dreamcast, this looks like an awesome way to be introduced to some of the titles they had to offer. Thank you guys for bringing these blasts from the past to us, such a fantastic trip down memory lane for sure.

PS1 demo disc that came in the original system release pack in is my most memorable one. It had the 3D trex tech demo on it and an FMV of some Japanese chick with wind blowing through her hair.

Duuuuuudes!!!!!!!! I love talk about demo discs. Such a big part of 90s ps1 life. All us poor kids would swap these things around like they were pokemon. The pizza hut demo for ps1 with Tony hawk was a big one. I had another with soul reaver that I played to death. Just last year i tracked down omega boostbfor ps1 as I only ever had the demo as a kid and I could never get it out of my mind.

There's a unique Dreamcast demo disc for Sonic Adventure 2 called "The Trial" that I think came with Phantasy Star Online back when it first released. It's just the opening City Escape level but what's unique about it is that the "Escape From the City" song has no vocals and Sonic is still wearing his original red sneakers instead of the Soap Shoes he wears in the final game. These demo discs are neat cause they sometimes show you stuff that was left on the cutting room floor (or in Metal Gear Solid 2's case, fool the player into thinking it's gonna be Solid Snake the whole game).

I have a big stack of demo discs for PS1, Dreamcast, and PS2. The cool thing with those Official Dreamcast Magazine demos is that a few have exclusive games that didn't release elsewhere. Sega Swirl aside, there's Super Boom Tread Troopers on one, which is like a way more frantic update of Comat for Atari 2600 that supports 4 players. Also, much like Christmas Nights on Saturn, there's an exclusive Toy Commander Christmas Mission on one of them where you get to control a toy Santa with a jetpack. There are more, but I'm not looking to write an exhaustive history here. I love demos. I can't tell you how many hours I spent with the Metal Gear Solid demo on PS1 on one of them, along with NFL Xtreme (which is a ton of fun). The Metal Gear Solid 2 demo that came with Zone of the Enders...I called into work and skipped a few college classes back then just to play it!

I don't recall ever having any demo discs for the DC unfortunately, but I had stacks of PS1 demos. I think they were mostly from US Playstation Magazine, still have many of them in a drawer somewhere. Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2 is such a badass game, well the whole series really, my favorite probably goes to TXR Zero on PS2 though. The series had a bit of an identity crisis afterwards though, going by Import Tuner Challenge later on. They rather accurately mapped the Tokyo highway system, and there are so many JDM cars that were under represented at the time like the Toyota JZX chassis or the Aristo, the Cima, Gloria, Cedric, etc. for example. You guys are clearly not car guys, so I get the confusion. The crux of the game loop is street racing, what you're doing are called highway pulls. Whoever maintains the lead position for a set amount of distance/time wins. I had a whole squad of friends that were doing this same stuff in the 00s on our local highways. The game takes inspiration from the real life 90s highway racing scene on Tokyo's Wangan line, C1 loop, Shuto line, etc. made famous by the Mid Night Club. They pioneered some of the craziest technology and fastest cars in the world at the time, and many members were highly respected professionals that were part of some of Japan's best tuning companies like HKS, Greddy, Top Secret, etc. as well as high ranking execs at car manufacturers. It's quite a fascinating time in history, and was adapted into a manga/anime called Wangan Midnight. I'm pretty sure the intent of the demo discs was to get you to buy the specific games being featured, not the console. I mean, how would you play the demo disc if you didn't already have the Dreamcast?
