The way the AI works in this game is that one of your opponents (most likely the first one you catch up to) becomes the "rival", which will keep up with you for a long time by using very strong rubber banding while the other cars don't put up any kind of fight. The rival car can switch mid-race, e.g. if the original rival car catches fire. Weirdly, the 1st place car never shows up until the rival car overtakes a backmarker *while ahead of the player,* at which point *it* becomes the 1st place car and the backmarker becomes the 2nd place car; you can see this happen at 8:54.

Once the first place car starts becoming your rubber bandy rival it makes it so bloody difficult to try and get 1st place. You can get into 1st but it's just impossible to hold on to it. It feels like it's really just down to luck as to whether you're in 1st or 2nd when the timer runs out.

Oof, don't like that rubber banding. That guy in 19th for a bit definitely shot away from you with unnatural acceleration several times!
