This is the best and most thorough "shootin' the breeze" about Sega conversation I have heard in ages. Thank you guys for getting together. You're bringing me back. The Dreamcast was the first console I ever bought brand new with my own money. WHen Sega announced they would cease support of it I vowed never to sell it. I love it. Merry Christmas!

I love this discourse, especially as a Sega fan that "was there" in the late 80s through the end of Dreamcast. 100% agree, it's important to preserve the lived history and truth because public opinion may not be your lived truth. Especially since game releases, marketing, and exposure to platforms could wildly vary not only by country, but even by region. It was SO much more localized back then and some games or platforms may not have been available where you lived. Those types of experiences are so valuable to express and document, thank you all for providing this format.

I love the translation notes in the Albert Odyssey manual. Working Designs actually improved the loading and increased EXP from battles to help cut down on the end game grind. I need to try the Japanese version sometime to see how much worse it is.

Sega Saturn, Shiro! Just played a bunch of Symphony of the Night on my Saturn while listening to this. Was gonna try booting up Tactics Ogre, but I didn't have the blocks available to create a save, so I figured I would progress where I could, using my Fenrir. Hopefully it will have fully integrated save management and storage capabilities, but if that never happens, it's fine also, will just have to get some save managers some day in that case. Been playing Saturn since my birthday in 1997

I love when I have the chance to play Saturn while listening to Shiro. I played some Duke Nukem, and some Alien Trilogy While I was listening.

This is a great conversation and podcast, as always. Sending out my thanks and hellos to everyone for all their hard work and dedication. One request: we must stop endlessly harping on "why Saturn failed" and "why Sega fell apart." Every single conversation on this subject devolves into one of these two rants. We need to move past that. It's like having every Nirvana discussion turn into a therapy session about Kurt Cobain's suicide. Focus on the positives and the good times, make your peace with the past. Also, when collecting Sega Saturn videogames, just get a stack of CD-Rs and burn discs. Nobody is going to jail for "piracy." Just play the games.

I absolutely love just about everything in this conversation (except the hate on CCE, although you make good points about it, too). You guys capture the enthusiasm I have for SEGA games and articulate why I love them so much. You make me feel like I'm not alone or have strange taste in games when the majority of people have lost sight of what makes SEGA games, and games of this era, so good. Cheers for sharing this with us and I look forward to more from you guys: easily some of the best KZfaqrs around.

Appreciate those kind words and you hit the nail on the head, we hope we can remind or show people what made SEGA games and their consoles so special. Gaming has moved on so much since SEGA’s heyday, and if we can collectively give those who weren’t there to experience them a glimpse of what it was like, even better. But equally, we love helping older fans reminisce and reconnect with those memories of days gone by. I’m glad you enjoyed the chat! - James “The SEGAHolic”.

Sega, if they can acquire the rights to everything needs to re-release Shining Force III complete with multiple language support. If they did this it would sell like gangbusters. I would buy a copy of something like this on day one. When I leaned of how this game was separated into three parts from Sega Lord Xs video about this game from a few years ago my mind was blown! I own an original U.S. long case copy PF Shining Force III. It is so cool. I have not gotten too far in it ove the years, but from what I have experienced I love it. By the way, I wasn’t a Saturn owner when t was originally on the market. I was caught up in the corny console wars of the 90s and early 2000s. A guy I met from eBay that I had bought and picked up a gaming item from and ended up becoming friends with had an extra console in original box all the way back in 2004. He traded it to me for something he needed. I am forever thankful. Keep up the good work guys!

Good to see some Shining Force 3 love. Having just finished an all 3 scenario playthrough recently i was reminded why scenario 1 was one of my top ten games of all time. Was going to be doing a series dive myself soon but not just looking at 3 but the entire series from In the Darkness through to its Saturn releases. Looking forward to the SegaLord X SF3 vid! On Final Fantasy it is incredible how much BETTER they are with the modifiers they add. I completed the first one really quickly with the exp mods on - the grind really is a lot of the game. I did quite enjoy the grind on SF3 though!

I can relate to what James said about CRTs becoming very expensive. I want more. Only a year ago I was able to get a Toshiba CRT for $10. Now everyone is listing every TV as a "Retro Gaming TV". I want more CRTs. I just have to wait for people to get realistic. Once in awhile you can catch a reasonable deal.

Shinning Force 3 only came out in Europe in 1998 so I felt it was a long time after FF7 at least back in the day.

Great conversation! And yeah, the Dreamcast controller not having dual analog sticks, and only 4 face buttons, was a big bummer. The new Saturn Pro controller should've been what the Dreamcast came with

Very fun chat, fellas! Oh man the memories of playing consoles through the RF Switch and picking channel 3 or 4 😅. My first experience with component cables was when I got my Saturn. I feel it wasn't pushed or promoted for Genesis nor NES/SNES.

Really interesting chat lads, especially all the stuff about gatekeeping and the Sega of America and Sega of Japan diffrences and its effect on the Saturn.

I love Shining Force III. I bought it brand new off the shelf and couldn’t stop playing. I played through it again last year, it’s still great. However, I can’t agree with you on FFVII. I love that game and replay it every year. It’s aged totally fine for me.

I've always held the same view as Mel about random battles in RPGs: they are so repetitive and it really made playing RPGs so repetitive and even annoying. A few games, like PDS and the Grandia series, made innovations in the battle systems that made these battles more interesting.

Maybe I just suck but I am constantly getting poisoned and there's not enough antidotes or potions on one of the first battles (on the dock)...and you have to rush to save the two guys so u can't even stop to heal until you're almost dead after saving them and then you're all out and still getting poisoned in EVERY single battle with a bat. I hear them say this game is balanced but I can't even beat the first battles. I've only tried this battle twice but it's a half hour or more commitment per try and I don't have time to just lose like that. Beautiful game, music and graphics both, I just wish I could play it.
