I glue up one segmented ring and it becomes 5 rings before I am done.
Just another way to do a bowl from a board.
I use Maple, Cherry and Burnt Oak AKA Cambia Oak
I used Minwax Wipe On Poly and Acks Sanding Paste and Polish Restore Paste for the finish.

Attempt number 12 ... let's see if this is deleted ..... I love this type of bowl, I think it's because it's a simple but effective method of making a bowl, not only that but it wastes very little wood, especially if you create it in this way ... it's a beautiful piece 😁 Yes, a shallow bowl version of this would be nice to see, showing how the angle you cut the rings at affects the overall shape of the bowl 👍

Thank you Don. I have started the design for a shallow bowl. In order to keep it shallow it would have to be just one cut. Each cut will add 3/4 of an inch. But I may consider cutting the thickness down. Hmm you just got me thinking. Thanks this just might be the answer. Gary

Thank you Andy. I also have thought about not staggering them. Staggering them does make the bowl stronger but I have done these types with only one layer so no stagger on those. But I have an option for making them strong enough. Not like it will be used for a Frisbee LOL.... I THINK! Take care, Gary

It does work. I first I calibrated the table saw blade to exactly 90 degrees. Trued up some scrap. Then added scrape to my table saw miter gauge extending it to 18". Then using an electronic/digital angle finder cut scrap until I got the miter gauge to exactly 67.5 degrees. This produced an 8 piece closed center segmentation....YES it can be done! Thanks Gary!

Segments from a board, clever! Thanks for sharing the jigs. I usually catch the ring with a gloved hand, but it's not for everyone and the backer is an excellent idea, as is the right angle. Quicker than using a square each time.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 10 ай бұрын
Thank you Josh. I am sure catching with a gloved hand is working fine for you. Myself I like to keep both hands on the parting tool as they can grab at any moment. So because of that I would not recommend catching the ring to anyone else. But it seems to work for you. Not trying to be the safety police but some people have a thing about gloves and moving objects. I got called out for wearing and apron at the lathe even though I wore one all my working days as a wood patternmaker.

Thank you very much Carol. I have been thinking about doing this for at least 5 years. It was fun to do and sure was easy to get that many segments. But the down side is if you make 5 separate rings you can have about any shape you want but this way you are limited. Take care, Gary

My first bowl (1975) was a bowl from a board. The rings were cut with a Jig Saw. By your standards the cuts were a mess, but useable. I still have the bowl. It was from a piece of 1 x 12 mahogany. Still looks pretty good. I sure wish I had known of your methods and fixtures back then. It certainly would have been easier. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

Thank you Glen. My first one was made on my band saw making half rings. Way to much work gluing the halves together so I decided to try this and it works. The fixture for catching the ring has become my favorite fixture I have come up with. No doubt someone will copy it and have it for sale. That has happened with other things I have come up with. But it is so easy and cheap to make most of the things I come up with. I am all about saving money when I can. Take care, Gary

Now, this is closer to my own style of woodworking... by all means, do the next one at a more shallow angle... Every yootoober that demonstrates the "bowl from a board" technique uses the same 45 degree slope. Would be interesting to see something more unique.

Papa, Another wonderful creation from your fertile imagination! Very nice indeed. But there is a bit of a problem; I’m dizzy! Some of your segmented works do that to me. Fear not, I’m not driving. And I haven’t been drinking 🫣. I’m sitting in my recliner heaping praise upon an exceptionally talented wood turner. Thank you for a delightful interlude in my otherwise slothful 🦥 day. Keep the aspidistra flying! God bless, Paul

I still have not made a fixture for doing a bowl from a board, but it is on my list. Living in Ariizona, it is hard to work in the garage when the temperature is over 110, and this is the 21 day in a row that it has been this way. So I just sit back and enjoy your vedio's Nice bowl, wonder what it would look like with all segment in sapele.

You've got this down to a science, Professor! I can tell just watching that it's become second nature to you. I'm sure explaining it to your audience slows the process down quite a bit. This was a joy to watch, my friend! You make it look easy-peasy! As for the bowl, it's gorgeous as always! The segments are perfect, the turning looks great and the finish is superb! Great job, buddy, keep'em coming! 😊 Phil

Well that is all I can say for now...you will have to watch next week LOL Take care my friend, Gary

Great execution Gary. I, too, have been using polyurethane to seal the wood before polishing. I use regular poly from a can, put on with a cloth, it builds faster than the wipe-on. I then polish with a buffing system, ending with carnauba wax.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 10 ай бұрын
Thank you Bill, I have used the regular poly but I find the wipe on to be easier to get a very smooth finish. It does take more coats but in this weather it happens pretty fast. I do not have a buffing system and I am sure that would help if you were using the regular poly. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thank you Dave. there is a local hardwood store where I live called Crosscut Hardwoods. It is called Cambi Oak and also referred to as roasted oak by some. It is red oak that is roasted in an oven till almost burnt. My understanding is it will make it so insects do not like it. Thanks for watching, Gary

Gary, really love your videos, especially the details, tips and insights you provide. I think your ring cutter is awesome. I looked on tinker and, searched for projects you uploaded,found several you’ve shown in your videos, but not the ring cutter. I do hope you’ll consider adding that, as it is really looks so much safer than using the bandsaw method. I’ve been watching your videos and am truly inspired to get back to the lathe and rekindle my love of turning. My suggestion for the 2nd board, is figuring a way to make the bowl from the board not the typical 40/45 straight angled sides, but rather curved, with a larger ratio base, so not so easily tipped over. Thank you again, such great work! Ian
