Hi guys thanks for watching. In this video I take you through the disassembly of a Seiko 7S36 movement. I will show you step by step each part removal to strip the movement back for cleaning. It is a relatively straightforward movement that is almost identical to a Seiko 7S26 only with a few more jewels. This is part 1 in the series. The following videos will be of the assembly. I hope its an easy step by step follow along to video.

Thanks for the video man! Stripped my first movement today, 7s36. I'm putting a NH36 in my mod, and wanted to learn more about the movements. When trying to regulate the 7s36 i managed to break the hairspring. I've ordered a new one from China, but I'm predicting this is going to be a hard one to replace and regulate! Thanks for your advice, and easy to follow instructions.

Nice Video Mike.. you make it look so easy! I actually gasped out loud when you had your minor 'ping' moment towards the end of the disassembly! 🤣😂 up to that point it had been an almost therapeutic and relaxing watch! Apr 2022! Just found this vid. For info, I have a 7S36A in perfect running order, although it is stopped at the moment. The main differences are slightly different hands, and a one-way ratchet bezel around the outside of the face. I don't know if there are different face colour options, mine is silvery, matted down with a very fine cross-hatch patterning. The text on the face reads Seiko 5 sports - above the hands, and below it shows water 100 resist automatic 23 jewel. Edit - having watched the reassembly, I see that you have used a slightly different case, with a rotating bezel - which is slightly different to the one on my watch!

Thank you for the great video and explanations, they are really helpful. Especially helpful would be to explain how to avoid flying components. I lost the jewel holder clip of a scrap nh36a movement. It flew in somewhere, never found it.

ajovev thanks for your nice comment. “Ping” moments happen to us all and the springs that hold the jewels in are particularly difficult at times. I have done a video on that subject so look at my others for diashock & diafix installation . Finding them can be impossible if it’s steel then a big magnate is what I use. Generally using good tweezers (Dumont) I recommend allot but they are pricy. Then it’s just learning your feel which only you can learn A few years back I contemplated buying a small light tent (see Ebay) where you can put on your desk. If something flies it could be contained unless it came outwards toward you! Problem is you can’t get a good view because the tent would hinder ..

Instead of using that Bergeron dial protector a small ziplock bag put over the dial protects the dial and makes it very easy to get the hand remover under the hour hand.
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 4 жыл бұрын
Mark Irvin yes I’ve used that method a few times. The dial protector usually works fine but it’s because there’s a camera in the way where my head should normally be which makes most of the process more challenging to be honest. Having the camera above gives you the viewer the best position especially if you are learning and going along with the video

Good job. I hope you didn't loose the c-clip for the pawn levers that I think you left behind the movement holder 😓 I haven't had the opportunity of working on a 7S36 or 26 yet, but I have to admit that they takes me out of my comfort area: 1.- I dont like the keyless works in the side of the motion works, just because it's against the order I usually work, and 2.- I hate those little plastic gears for the calendar setting, because I think they will degrade and stop working over time, as has happend with most of the 5606 movements. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the series, thank you very much.
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 4 жыл бұрын
Agustin Aguilar thanks. No problem in the pawl lever circlip all safely stowed away. I think the nylon gears have plenty of life in them yet although you would expect them to go brittle eventually. Can only hope it’s a better grade of plastic now. Yes the keyless is annoying . On my last 7s26 service I didn’t do something right and only found out at the end which means train wheel bridge off again etc. Assembly videos will most likely be in a few weeks as I am off on my holidays . Just wanted to upload this now.

Morteza Saremi you know I think you are right. I was thinking that. I now have to wonder if the 7S26 that was in it to start with is actually a 7S36 but with a different rotor! I bought the 7S36 movement as it was listed as that on a website. Now disappointed that I have made a misleading video ..

I can’t answer that. It’s not really a diver watch for a start plus old watches require their gaskets changing to be kept water tight. Only way to be sure would be to take it to a watch repairer and have it pressure tested.

HI Steve, there is little noticeable difference between the two other than a small removable jewel plate in the 36 model. I to point it out somewhere in one of the videos. Not sure if its just to bump up the jewel count or is actually an improvement on the 26 version.

is there any effect on 7s36 if setting the clock in the opposite direction/counter clockwise?
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 3 жыл бұрын
I have heard this before but I see no real issue with it certainly with these. Where there could be issues is with the day date backing up past 12 if its just done a date change . Ironically in vintage watches like 60s etc the date often didnt have quickset so you would wind past 12 to change over and carry on until around 1 then wind back to 10 and forward again to change over, like a hack quick set. Accutron tuning forks you dont want to wind backwards though.

Yes. the only thing to watch out for is crown position. Both movements must have the crown at the right place. eg crown at 3 oclock. The discs are designed to line up with the window at crown positions so a crown at 4 will not line up with a crown at 3,.

@@MyRetroWatches Thanks for responding. The date wheel is slightly out of alignment such that the number sits slightly higher in the window. My theory is that if I filed down the locking finger, the date wheel would rotate clockwise further and solve this problem.
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 4 жыл бұрын
drunkdriver hmm. The only thing that moves it is the black nylon part which has the date & day fingers. Quickset is a different mechanical operation. So my question now is, is the alignment out on both quickset operation & turning through 24 hours or just one of these operations?
@drunkdriver
@drunkdriver 4 жыл бұрын
@@MyRetroWatchesThe date wheel is off by the same amount with both quickset operation and through turning 24 hours. I think its the mechanism that locks the wheel in place that is the problem. Or perhaps the datewheel is printed misaligned.

Day before yesterday think it was, my daughter found one of my old skool Sekonda's that had sat in a cupboard for years, so whips off the case, new battery in and its up and running but I hadn't quite engage the spring pin in the folding part of the buckle and a couple hours later over a concrete floor it hit the deck smashing the crystal and damaged the Miyota 2115 movement which went crazy with the minute hand going round like a second hand then stopping and starting like it was on dodgy stuff :( Still only a couple quid for a new one, the dial survived and the glass is like hardly anything. What causes a 7s26 (and presumably a 7s36) movement to not hold its wind for more than about 4 hours or so of inactivity? The number of complaints about this on the Web are numerous and I've never seen an explanation from a watch repairer. To me, its as if the mainspring stops releasing its stored energy after four hours. Can they "stick"?
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 4 жыл бұрын
Robert Brandywine not holding power will be mainspring related. I would first check the rotor is on correctly as you cannot hand wind the movement it relies solely on rotor movement. A well serviced 7S should run 36-48 hours on a full wind ( could be two days of wear to wind) If possible I would take the back off . See if the rotor is loose from its fitting. If not you can use a screwdriver to wind the mainspring , screw is on top of the ratchet wheel. If fully winding the spring and the watch still stops then it’s not power it’s something in the train stopping it. A service would sort this out.
@robertbrandywine

@@MyRetroWatches Thanks, I checked that. Anyway, since I posted, I sent it off to a watch repair shop that will work on the 7s26. I'll report back what they find.
