I worked as a biology teacher before and this is so true. One student I had who most claimed he wasn’t intelligent. I believed In him and told him that he was able to do science. And In doing so he actually got the highest grade on the following quiz. Words are so powerful. Be careful what you say. You can use it as a weapon or a drug. Be kind always 💜

I only recently learned about the Pygmalion effect, so cool to see it here! 🙂 Fun fact: the negative Pygmalion effect is called the Golem effect. Both Pygmalion and Golem were statues that according to myth turned into a living person/creature. 😊

I think that is so right when it comes to the Pygmalion effect. Teachers do have a large impact on how kids perform. If the teacher is making comments that the child will not do well then the child's hopes go down and they have less confidence in themselves and in turn are discouraged to do good in the class or even the school.

I spent the better part of 16 years of my childhood trying to play a supportive role to my mother who is an addict, any abuser, mentally unstable, but still my mother at least that I felt at the time. She would bring people into the home as partners that were physically violent, fully physically restraining me and smothering me with things so that I couldn’t breathe; having to attempt a physical struggle for freedom just for air while they laughed in great humor kind of violent, and so often times I saw her and myself and my brother for victims to extremely violent hands of people she brought into the home, and up until I was sixteen years old I used to always tell my mom “I love you I’m there for you and I support you.” And every. single. time. She would return that sentiment with “you don’t love me you never loved me”. Fourteen years later I am now thirty years old and have spent the last fourteen years not just giving up trying to convince someone of my true feelings (at the time) because no matter how honest and true the words I spoke were to her, that now not only do I not love her, I loathe her, and when I try to think back to all the times I remember truly feeling like I cared about my mom because I know it was so real deep down at that time it feels totally and completely alien to me now, that concept. At three years old she was the reason I got raped and later she also played a role in my sexual abuse as a child so you can imagine where I am at in adulthood towards her now. Sure, I never ever LIKED my mother, I was angry my entire life at her, every single year I could think leading up to that sixteenth year…but I recall the unfamiliar but real nonetheless memories of having love in my heart somewhere even just a faint amount before she ultimately created her own self fulfilling prophecy. Out of kindness I allowed her to move in with me because she was homeless…and to this day she still in her breaks from reality (an every day event) she will for some reason even despite the last fourteen years of me coming to terms with the fact that in her world I will never be right even if she is wrong, she still tries to pull the “you don’t love me, you never loved me” trip, and ever since sixteen my default response to her, and absolutely my truest feelings are…”Yep. You’re right.” I suppose I could feel bad for her, my counselor tries to inspire those feelings in me so that I can ultimately move past my feelings of resentment for my own benefit inside, but here I stand not just not loving her but ultimately hating her and living in an endless chasm of contempt at any sight or sound of her. Let this be an example to anyone in a position my mother is in now. You very well may have done this to yourself.

What a horror story. Sorry to hear. It appears to me that she projected her self loathing onto you. What I learnt after abuse was that part of our recovery from abuse is false guilt, that they said that we deserved it, and forgiving ourselves. If we can forgive ourselves then we might find it easier to forgive our abusers, so that they lose their power to continue to affect us negatively. We know when we're healed because instead of fear and loathing, we feel pity for their sad sad lives, and indifference.

@@jomansson5742 I just don’t feel that this is the way that I see things. I don’t have a reason to forgive myself. I’ve done nothing wrong. I am completely a victim and I am still living as a victim, and to forgive her isn’t going to do me any favors. She would effect me equal amounts no matter what and she deserves all the cause and effect she creates within her universe. I appreciate how you’ve doing help in that viewpoint but it’s kind of awkward to always hear this, because people just assume “Oh. She just isn’t mature” or “oh. She will regret that someday.” But it’s entirely possible that people just have different opinions on the way the world is supposed to work too. I’m not trying to be combative at all, my point is just that people SHOULD be held accountable for what they do. I don’t need to actively do or feel a single thing for it to land in her lap just that way, but I’ll be damned if I show a kindness to someone who has and had zero regard for violating me, and not just violating me, but violated me and even as an adult she tells my friends and my peers and my social circle that I’m a delusional liar and completely disregarding my trauma of which she caused all of. If I myself have learned anything in this life it’s that true growth and humanity is going to come from being able to suck it up and admit your wrongdoings and with that I would at least HOPE that it’s followed by remorse but remorse isn’t even a requirement in my book. Acknowledgment alone would be plenty. Maybe then she would be worth the rest of my emotional efforts. Until then, I’m busy.

@@xFlowerChild420x I appreciate your feedback and I totally understand. I've been there too. My ex was so vile, a narcissist, but after we broke up he went around charming my favourite people and slandering me to everyone else. I loathed him for 2 years, but nobody backed me, at all. In the end the hatred I was carrying was giving me depression and anxiety, and he was stealing my focus, living rent free in my head, so I had to put a stop to it. The only way I could do that was to forgive it all, and myself for falling for it. Immediately I felt free, and didn't care anymore. Immediately, people who I respected, came up to me out of the blue to say that they never liked the guy, funnily enough, because I'd forgiven him and didn't care. Not long after he became really unpopular and left town, saying he was never coming back. So that's where I'm coming from. Forgiveness removes their power over us and sets US free.

It is true. I got a job, and I was so happy with my new job I was terryfied of being fired. So I started to think I was gonna get fired, and I was. I didn't get why, I was a good worker and the company wasn't known for firing people, if anything, the other way around, people usually were the ones to leave the company. I often think bad things about myself. Many, many times they come true. It is horrible.

Toxic fandoms a lot of time are the result of self fulfilling prophecies. First someone in the fandom or the person/media they follow does something outsiders don't like. 2nd People bash and ridicule them and call them toxic. 3rd The fandom starts to fight back. 4th Now people have more screenshots for KZfaq video about how toxic the fandom is.

The Rick&Morty fandom is a good example. 1. some guy made that cringy post that I honestly still think was never serious. 2. the fans turned it into a meme within the community 3. Outsiders start seeing the meme and take it way to serious and label the fandom pretentious and toxic 4. They fight back 5. KZfaqrs start making videos criticizing every little thing. They were literally reacting to cosplays and saying that's why the fandom was toxic lol.

The belief could affect you by proxy, as in someone else's negative beliefs could influence the beliefs of a third party who may go on to interact with you at some point in time, thereby affecting you. If you mean literally just the sole thoughts of someone else, then that would be some serious paranoid schizo thinking.

Imagine the nature of the relationships of someone like myself: an alcoholic, full of a thousand and one fears, and an ego that would rather die than admit to being wrong. If you have all these fears about everything, and an ego that insists on being right, you will make your worst fears come true. At least then you can get the perverse satisfaction of being able to say "see, I was right"! Who cares if I'm dead, as long as everyone will realize how right and wonderful I was! Lol. Such is the way one's ego conspires with fear to manifest the miserable life of the alcoholic.

Great video, but I was not 100% satisfied with the explanation. So, for those who are still figuring the prophecy, here's an example of my own. You (male, "M"), just got in a relationship with Lisa (female, "F"). Somewhere along the way M starts thinking Lisa is being unfaithful (cheating on you), even though she isn't. Because of his wrongful belief, he starts acting "weird"; pretty much more quiet, not sharing thoughts, and pretty much just you not being himself. This behaviour is noticed by Lisa, which confuses her since she has not done anything wrong. Months pass by and these things keep repeating themselves over and over again, and guess what? because of this, Lisa no longer finds M attractive and she ends up cheating on him. Had M not doubted himself (and therefore acted on it), Lisa would not have gotten tired (or desperate, or whatever it is you want to call it) of M, and no cheating would have taken place. In short, a self fulfilling prophecy is something that you create yourself, the interesting part is that if you were not to get involved in such thing, it would never happen at all.

What's the difference between self fullfilling prophecy and prejudice? Sounds like the same thing.
@1.4142

Prejudice is an unfair like or dislike towards people. A self fulfilling prophecy is the positive feedback loop of a notion becoming true just because it was thought. Prejudice can be amplified through fulfilling prophecies, but not all fulfilling prophecies originate from prejudice.

there was once a great king who sought advice from an oracle who told him his land would be ruled by a king from the nation across the channel; to prevent this he invaded the nation who shared a border with his along a channel and decimated the people but he saw the women were faire and took many concubines, the law stated his eldest son must be king so when he died he left all his lands to he son of a woman from across the channel

@@thebluerock6048I think the lesson was that the first king intentionally thought that taking the other kingdoms land will help stop his kingdom being taken over. He had a thought process of “oh no there going to take my land”. Since he kept festering this belief and thought process the self fulfilling prophecy happened. Back then it was always the eldest who got the most when the father died. Since the person who inherited the kingdom eventually died the women he married who was form the very land that the first king thought was gonna take over. The first kings nightmare came to life.
