Birch Plywood Flooring in our Campervan | Transit Van Conversion E13

↠ It's time to add our birch plywood flooring to our campervan! The original van plywood floor was 8mm and we're replacing it with 12mm of birch ply. This should give us a much stronger and firmer base to both walk on and fix our cabinets to. Installing the new floor into our van conversion was (thankfully) one of the fairly easy tasks as we still had the old van floor to trace around.😎
...One thing we realised just in time was that we needed to cut an access hole for the Transit spare wheel, which is located right at the rear of the van. Oops... we covered that up when we put our van subfloor in, so little adjustment necessary 😀
Before we secured the floor (with 130 screws, it's not going anywhere!) we added some yacht varnish just on the edges, in case any water or moisture makes its way through.
What's next? We want to build our step...and lay the vinyl down. But might put some van carpet on the pillars too! There's lots of moments in the build where it's not obvious what the next step is, but as long as you're always moving forward, that's the important thing!

Yeah we found Totem Timber the best place to get all our wood! We're originally from Surrey but spent some time living in London, Bristol and now Devon 🙂

Great job really loved watching the well documented conversion, we’ve has a very similar experience since January this year with our Ford Transit 14 plate jumbo, we’ve done a lot of similar things just finishing up our ceiling today we’ve subscribed to see how you get on, keep the videos coming it’s really amazing to see you should be super proud.

Thank you very much for the kind words 🙂 Hope that your ceiling install went well and you're enjoying your build, must feel like it's starting to come together now 😊 We're having fun with ours, even if it feels like there's a lot to do most of the time! 😁

Up to 04:22 I thought: "What a relief - no rain!". Oh well. 🙄 Very good point and mental note to myself: Check my spare wheel access (I think I have a similar setup - will check tomorrow)👍. Nice touch on the "Self-Built-Stories-Walk-of-Fame"! May 26th - that's my birthday! - If that ain't a good omen, I don't know what is. 😊 We will use tongue and groove stranded board for our floor - I love the idea with the chalk cord (I still have one of those in the toolbox from our Canada basement build a looong time ago). 😎 I've used boat (marine) laquer on cut edges of ply wood. That stuff is inpenetrable. 😁 Very nice job, you two. And I finally see the lag in video publishing and don't feel so bad any longer. 🙈😊

Haha, nice, well that was a good day! 🙂 Yeah glad we realised about the spare wheel access before we put down the vinyl and everything. That would have been a pain otherwise. And yeah there is most definitely a video lag 😂 it's like another project all in itself! Hopefully we'll close the gap a bit though... 😀

Haha yeah, happy to report all was well though! Arrived back with all windows in one piece 😅 Thank you! It's going well, not done (still lots to do!) but progressing. And a bit of a lag finding time to get the videos out 🙂

@@SelfBuiltStories ah great to hear.. I learnt so much doing my build.. I tried to do my videos straight away after I had done each bit.. Be great if you could take a look at some point, you might be able to help me think about anything I missed?!! 😂 I am looking at some ideas for future videos too now the build is done?! As you were thinking about your build… what sort of things did you look for on KZfaq to help or get started?!

Yeah always a learning experience that's for sure, every thing is a mini project all in itself. You're better than us with the videos then, 🤣 If we'd finished we would likely make some videos actually taking the van out somewhere. In terms of getting started.... I guess general tours and build time lapses at the beginning. Had to be sold the idea of what the end goal was before we started diving into all the technical details 😛

I don't suppose I could get a measurement from back and sides of van as to where your plug hole for the spare wheel winch is?? Would be such a huge help as the floor for our same van is already covered with insulation and ply so thers no need to take it up. Great videos, il be using them as my templates.😊😊👏👏

Hey, sure, we're in the van at the moment so when I get a spare moment I'll clear some of the stuff out the back and measure it for you :) Remind me if I forget!

Ok so it's pretty much exactly 93cm from the left pillar to the middle of the circle, and 63cm from the right. Then it's 12cm roughly back from the edge where it drops down at the rear of the van. If you're looking at the rear pillars of the van, it sits visually on a line near the end of them just a little bit before the door trim starts. Hope that helps 🙂

How are you getting on with the gaps under the floor ? Great built :)
@SelfBuiltStories
@SelfBuiltStories 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers! 🙂 And what do you mean by the gaps? There is a lattice of insulation board so not really any gaps under there. Do you mean the joins between the big pieces of ply? If so, the only thing we would change is to make sure the ends of the big boards perfectly fall in the middle of one of the battens underneath, because for a while there was a tiny amount of flex at the edges. But that's getting less and less as more things are built spanning the joins so it's not really something we notice anymore.

Hello. I really like your vlogs but i was wondering why you didn’t use cheaper marine ply on the floor?
@SelfBuiltStories
@SelfBuiltStories Жыл бұрын
Hiya! Glad you're enjoying them 🙂 And when we bought our birch ply it was actually cheaper than an equivalent sheet of marine ply. It's more than doubled in price since with everything going on in Europe. We wanted the birch as well though as we've used it to make our cabinets, so having just one type was handy to be able to use up all the offcuts. HTH!

What is the thread with chalk on? Do you buy it lite that or how do you prep it?
@SelfBuiltStories
@SelfBuiltStories 2 жыл бұрын
It's called a chalk line, handy piece of kit. It's all one unit, the thread sits inside a box of chalk, you just pull it out and use it. When you wind it back in it gets covered in chalk again 🙂 They're about £10, like these: www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=chalk+line

Can I ask where you sourced you birch faced ply from please, I'm also in the Exeter area and struggling to find anyone who stocks this, appreciate your help
@SelfBuiltStories
@SelfBuiltStories 9 ай бұрын
Sure, it's Baltic Birch ply which is actually all birch throughout, not just the faces. We bought all ours and most of our redwood from Totem Timber in Plymouth. Would definitely recommend, they have a big warehouse with lots of stock and can cut full sheets down if needed 👍
