It's finally time to lay our campervan vinyl floor! We choose to use sheet vinyl flooring in our van conversion as it's lightweight and fairly easy to install.
Before laying the vinyl floor down we added some 4-way stretch carpet to the top end of our plywood flooring and also the pillars near the back of the van. We thought we would do that first to give a nice flush finish once the vinyl flooring was installed. It was our first time using stretch carpet too and we really enjoyed working with it!
We also filled the gaps at the edge of the plywood with some expanding foam and then cut back the excess once it was cured to give the vinyl something to sit on and not fall down all the gaps.
We finished by adding some sikaflex 522 around the edges to seal in the vinyl floor and keep it waterproof.
It feels like it's starting to look more like a campervan now that the flooring is in! It took a long time to cut back the vinyl so that it fitted neatly but it was worth doing, we really like how it turned out 🙂

Awesome, glad you like them! We got our vinyl from www.flooringsuperstore.com/. We really like the style of it, and was quite easy to work with. The only thing to bare in mind is it's fairly thin the one we went for, so we have a few dinks around it where we've dropped things while we've been working in the van 😜 They have quite a few different styles and options though, possibly we would go for one a tad thicker if we were doing it again

Well done! Flooring makes all the difference in making it feel like a regular room and not a cargo area.😍 I was suspecting you'd be carrying the vapour barrier from the floor across to the walls and roof? Or do you have something different planned? 🤔 Great to see your progress! 🙂👍 Best regards from Germany!🍀
@SelfBuiltStories
@SelfBuiltStories 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! After a lot of deliberation we actually decided not to put in a vapour barrier, as we think moisture will always find cold surfaces in the van, especially as there are drain holes and things to the outside anyway. We're instead concentrating on air flow and dry heat to combat the moisture issues. Glad you enjoyed it!

I thought that you had already cut the vinyl flooring using the old plywood floor panels as a templete.
@SelfBuiltStories
@SelfBuiltStories 3 ай бұрын
We drew around them as a template to get a good guide that let us cut near the line for the first pass, but wouldn't have wanted to cut them out right on that line as the old plywood pieces weren't a precise fit. To get it right up snuggly to the edge we did the final trim with it in place in the van 👍

How did you find removing and carpeting around the rear seal area? Was it full of that weird cream coloured glue stuff? I had to replace mine on the transit custom after a leak around one of the rear doors, and frankly I'm nervous removing it again for carpeting in case it leaks again. Great vids, keep us updated!
@SelfBuiltStories
@SelfBuiltStories 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the edge of the metal where the trim seal sits was lined with that sticky glue, but it was still very easy to take off. We tried not to carpet right up to the edge so as not to cause issues when the trim went back on. We marked the middle of each 'side' of trim both on the trim and on the van before we took it back off, so we could seat it back in the same place afterwards and bash it in securely with a mallet. Then we just used some plastic trim tools to slide the edges of the carpet under once it was back on to make it a neat finish. So far we haven't had any leaks and it's been subjected to quite a bit of heavy rain since we did it, so I think we're ok there, fingers crossed it stays that way! 🙂 And thanks, there will be more to come for sure!

nice job, the carpet is nice. how's it holding up? the. vinyl looks good. as a tip it would have been much easer to have made a cardboard template first then cut the template. then pop the vinyl right in.

Thanks! The vinyl is holding up fine, although as it’s fairly thin it doesn’t like it if we drop our sharp tools on it..! 🙃 Using cardboard would have worked but we wouldn’t have had enough to cover the whole floor. We didn’t actually find it too bad the way we did it 👍🏻

Hey, sure we got it from www.flooringsuperstore.com/ and it was Imperia Hartford Oak. Not sure if they still have that style but there are others similar. We really like ours, although would possibly consider something with a slightly thicker wear layer as well as we've dinked ours in a few places from dropping tools on it during the build. Can't notice unless you know where to look though 😛

@@ourworldonwheels No worries, yeah the altro is pretty rugged, we used the wetroom one in our shower. The vinyl is fine too if you're careful during the build phase, we just found every time we cleared up it wasn't long before all manner of tools were back in the van, so a couple of build battle scars 😁

Vinyl is easier to clean but wouldn't some carpet be warmer, adding an extra insulation from the floor?
@SelfBuiltStories
@SelfBuiltStories Жыл бұрын
You could use carpet if you wanted though personally we wouldn't want to because yeah it would be a nightmare to clean and we prefer the styles you can get vinyl. We're in and out of ours a lot as we're building it and if it's been raining outside it doesn't take much to get muddy by the step, so you would have to be really good about taking your shoes off when you went inside if you had carpet. Vinyl is also really easy to sweep if there's small bits of stones and debris etc which happens a lot too, or just bits of twig and leaves that blow in from outside. We don't find it particularly cold with the vinyl, as under it is 12mm plywood and then 25mm of foam insulation. At the moment it's been sub zero outside but with the heater on we've been able to be in the van at a comfortable 20c walking around and with opening and closing the door repeatedly going in and out to get another tool that we forgot 😛👍

How's the spray adhesive under the sheet vinyl holding up? Any bubbling/shifting/wrinkling/etc.? I'm about to lay sheet vinyl in my Transit, and I'm thinking about gluing it, but I'm doing the conversion single-handedly and I'm trying to find the right balance between ease of installation and the "standard" way of doing things.

Hey, it's holding up just fine, no issues at all. Has stayed nicely stuck down so far, not coming up anywhere and we haven't noticed any wrinkling or anything like that. @SelfBuiltStories

@@danielramli7144 Hiya, haha cheers :) Yeah it's holding up perfectly fine for us, no sign of it peeling up anywhere. We used a few cans of the adhesive that was recommended by the place we got the vinyl from first (www.flooringsuperstore.com/impero-vinyl-adhesive.html ). But when that ran out we just used some other contact adhesive, either the Trim Fix which we had for the carpet, or the Evo Stik all purpose one. Can't remember which but it was one of those two! Hiya, a few reasons really. We wanted it to be really thin to not lose any standing height, and also be a single sheet so it's easy to wipe clean and no unsealed edges anywhere. But also figured it would be easier and less fiddly to install too, just cutting around the edges of the van.
