Just as elephant are ecological keystones, they are keystone to a greater awareness. They are ambassadors in a sense. Ambassadors of an ancient order of empathy, which is fundamentally connected to our well being

As a former elephant keeper, I know that when they typically charge, you don't run - you actually take a step forward. It blows their mind that instead of running, you're actually advancing on them. They think that your kung-fu must be REALLY strong, or else you'd be running, so it puts that doubt in their mind and they stop their charge.

Yes because clearly no elephant keepers exist or go online, and everyone is a loser with no real skills like you. BTW OP, this works with most predators unless they are famished. The risk/reward is not worth it when attacking an animal that stands it's ground. Predators are tactical and cunning, and will not risk much when finding food.

Dear all, Thank you for taking the time to comment on my seminal elephant encounter video and it would be great to respond by sharing the story behind it. The video, filmed on a wilderness trail, is a one-in-a-million encounter. It is authentic and the elephant is wild, not trained. Neither are there any AK47s, snipers or nuclear warheads behind me. As a wilderness guide i strive to avoid confrontations with wild animals, and in 30 years of guiding, have never deliberately provoked one. The default reaction of wild animals, including big game, is to avoid encounters with humans. However, the reality is that things do not always go according to the book. Then what? As a guide, and have to deal with the scenario before you. With all the hindsight in the world, would not have done anything differently. I did not get myself into a situation, i got myself and our trail party out of one. How evenly the bull walks away at the end, comfortable enough to turn his back on us, is a testament to this. I would NEVER suggest that anyone tries this! If you are a guide then i urge you to use extreme caution whilst walking. In the jungles of social media sensationalism, the lack of proper context is often a casualty. It took me 18 months to post the video online because of this, but i wanted to share the wonder of elephants. Therefore i urge you all to look beyond and recognize the significance of meaningful wilderness encounters. That modern man still shares a kinship with the wild. That our natural world … and its conservation … is absolutely essential to our well-being. That in order to maintain our own respect and dignity, we must treat our environment in the same way. My message is about a transformative view of elephant awareness. And wilderness conservation. It is time to view these animals through a different lens, a lens that also incorporates our own wholeness and sacred attitudes. The encounter was after all about the elephant, not me. Please visit www.unjovu.weebly.com for more. With wild warm wilderness wishes, Alan McSmith.

incredible understanding. Alan moves forward as the elephant does, but only enough to show he is not afraid and is confident, not so much as to be aggressive. he doesn't escalate the encounter, just shows he's not to be fought. then as soon as the charge is done, he backs up and shows he's not interested in fighting anymore than the elephant is, he's basically he'll fight if he has to, but doesn't want it. not only does the elephant get it, it doesn't really want a fight either, it's concerned that this creature means him harm, but it sees his confidence and resolve and doubts if it could win if it came to contact. the best part is that they both back down and leave together, neither has lost or won any kind of dominance, just a mutual recognition of danger

The elephant respected the man more when he stood his ground while remaining calm versus screaming and running. He even tried him a few more times but the man still remained calm and showed he wasn't a threat, but not willing to just sit there either by waving his arms. They both go on to live another day. Moral of the story is it's not what happens to you, but it's how you react that determines the outcome.

Showing just how fantastic the relationship between man and nature can really be. Complete respect for the animal and the man from the animal. Years of experience here. Top video. There are few places where one can still do this. Many elephants are hunted and harassed and in areas like that maybe the encounter would have been very different. We can see here that Alan Smith is an area he knows well and the animals within.

Hi Murray, many thanks for your comment and astute assumptions of the encounter. It really is a wonderful example of the value of energy and as you say, the relationships between man and nature. Its interesting to point out however, that the footage was filmed in an area of moderate to high historical hunting and poaching pressure. Energy can still transcend this.

@@alanmcsmith9433 Not that it's the same, but I marvel that there are big whales old enough to recall huge murderous onslaughts against whole schools of them, but when they are near relatively small boats and decide to breach, they do it at a safe distance from the boat. Part of the problem with elephants is how intelligent and social they are; without "good influences" from dominant females, they are prone to misbehavior, and they do indeed have tremendous memories for being mistreated by humans. This elephant was just "flexing and yapping", if you get me. They get moody and territorial. I know they guide must have been shitting himself, because they don't ALWAYS stop, but he bluffed wonderfully here and poor Elephant Jr. didn't know what hit him. He slunk off having been thoroughly emasculated, haha.

@@fransbuijs808 sure, but no animal will ever fight another unless it has no choice, and even then it usually only does it when it knows it can win. A lion will attack weak prey, because the risk of injury or wasting energy on a failed hunt is too high otherwise, unless it's desperate. an elephant will mock charge to scare the other animal away, it won't fight unless attacked, protecting others or its hormones are making it aggressive. again, the fight consumes a lot of energy and any injury could be fatal. Alan standing his ground like that makes the elephant doubt the outcome, no animal responds like that unless it's confident, so it has to either fight an animal that could harm it (it doesn't know he couldn't, of course) or back down. if he'd been aggressive, the outcome would have been difficult as it would have been a direct threat and danger, not avoidable risk Alan's clearly experienced, first to see the body language and understand the intent and correct response, and second to have the resolve to follow through

God bless you for sparing this magnificent animal's life. All too often it seems, the way to solve a 'problem' like this is to reach for a gun ...

The elephant goes home, and is viciously mocked by his friends around the work cooler the following day. "No guys, you don't understand" *looks around nervously* "...he had a stick." Other elephants *whisper* "Oh fuck, a stick, you didn't say he had a stick. You're lucky to be alive."

Thank you Alan for showing this world how amazing this world can be, and how mind-blowing it is to be a human being in it. I worked in wildlife parks before, and although elephants are majestic creatures to observe up close, they're also smart, and very naughty haha!

Dont run , but there are a lot of factors to be considered , each encounter, can be different , and a lot depends on the area you are in , if the ellies are harassed , in said area , or hunted, dont go on foot with clients!
@philippelorin2601

agree with you Piet, don't run, and the next step would be to give the elephant more room , moving slowly away. I've been taught not to put pressure on the game, not even for a good footage or a better sighting and that's a point some guests don't understand. They pay hence they must get the best of the show.There's a cut in the video at about 1'33", the eli has moved a bit , so I guess the guide had time and room to step away. I deeply respect his knowledge and belief in energy, but I'm not sure I would have reacted the same way. Glad this bull wasn't in must...

@Julian Carnall, having suicidal tendencies also helps. Most of these brave souls accept the risk that one day the animals they care so much about may get them and they don't mind that. The Lion Whisperer has said that many, many times. (He hasn't said that he's suicidal but he accepts the risks and says that if it happens, it happens.)

I guess race drivers have the same attitude. They may die on the track but they never think about it during a race. They know what the car can do and this guy knows what the elephant can do.

Ottoman Empire not really this is natural elephant behavior , they are used to creatures running away from them when they charge so when you hold your ground it confuses them and makes them more wary and offset. its standard guide procedure to never run when an elephant charges you like that , it actually puts you in more danger and it takes experience/resolve not to give into your primal instinct to run away from a 5 tonne animal running straight for you , as well as understanding their general behavior and body language
