I’m a very experienced hamster owner and would love to own gerbils. However I won’t purchase them here in the US because there are no reputable and ethical breeders here. The only place u can buy them is in pet stores. Which comes with problems of inbreeding _medical issues_and being untamable.

If it’s the ethics that trouble you, how about adoption? It won’t protect you from bad genetics but you won’t be enabling a bad breeder, and you’ll give a badly treated furball a good shot in life.

I totally understand your opinion.. When I got my own boys it was really hard to navigate between who I thought was a good breeder and who I thought was a crap backyard breeder. It definitely helps if you're able to see the person and their setups and the animal's parents.
