Thanks to BetterHelp for sponsoring this video: betterhelp.com/namanhkapur // Senior engineers aren't that good, and they definitely aren't much better than you. In many ways, they are just as clueless, so stop feeling like an imposter and instead focus your energy on being uncomfortable, since that's the best way to grow and move up the ranks. Remember that senior engineers were just like you at one point, junior and out of their depth. With enough time, patience, and experience, they were able to level up and so can you!

"I don't know jack" is what I tell junior engineers I happen to work on projects with. I take them through my workflow on building stuff which involves a lot of research in documentations and stackoverflowing. I think that boosts their confidence. I have seen most of them build scary complex stuff without supervision after that.

The way you think resonates so much with my own thinking. I am a senior engineer but I completely agree with what you said. Nobody has it all figured out. The best engineers know that there's someone better than them at a particular task/tech. And it's that thought, coupled with curiosity, eagerness to learn, create impact, that keeps pushing them forward towards excellence.

"Senior Engineers" do not even make sense anymore in 90% of companies. What I learnt is that every company has their own version of what a "Senior" engineer is. You can be a senior in your own company but that can also mean jack shit in another company. Domain knowledge is so important that most devs will get promoted to Senior purely on having massive domain knowledge. Nowadays I just see it as a spectrum. Everyone is just a developer to me, and they all have different levels of experience. Working in a single company for 15 years with the title "Senior Engineer" means nothing to me anymore. You are just a developer with some experience and most likely tons of domain knowledge for that specific company.

15 years in the same IT company is alot... I hope this company has a lot of projects. 😂😂😂😂😂 If they don't have new product to challenges the people, this guy are working to keep the code legacy. Confort zone and you as a developer stop learning New things.

I'm all over the place on this. I'm a lower-intermediate dev, and I feel like I generally know what I'm doing. By that, I mean I can stumble into something I don't know much about and figure it out. The seniors I work with, just from talking to them, still feel the same way, they're just faster at it since they're less likely to be starting from zero knowledge on any particular problem. So, from that point of view, I totally think I have what it takes to be a senior one day - experience and a continued willingness to just keep figuring stuff out. It's the interview process that fucks with me lol.

If I ever get 30 years of experience I've been working too long 😂 And "internal confidence" is more like "self-regard" that you maintain, while being able to take feedback. It's easier to take feedback with self-regard, because you know that needing feedback doesn't automatically make you a bad person.

@@namanhkapur 🤣 i liked your first couple of videos visiting campuses, hqs and hub spots, asking dope questions but this new content lame af. Many others and i can easily see through the 'Dunning-Kruger' smoke and noise bro. Your energy from earlier videos of wanting to learn and share with your audience to now trying to 'teach' and give 'advice/analysis' weak and not convincing. I'd just stick to entertainment. a lot of people dont look for advice from people less successful than them.....respectfully

I would be careful denigrating senior engineers. Specialized fields (networking, control systems, graphics, machine learning…) rely on senior engineers as subject matter experts. Saying the people who built Starlink, built graphics engines, built web browsers are not ‘that good’ is disrespectful- you should aspire to have the same skill and ability as these folks if you are taking your engineering career seriously
