Okinawan Spirit - 沖縄の心

3 жыл бұрын

Toshihiro Oshiro is 9th-dan in Shima-Ha Shorin Ryu karate, and 8th dan Yamanni Chinen Ryu Kobujutsu. He learned karate and kobudo in Okinawa, then for several decades taught in the USA. In 2018 he returned to Okinawa. In this interview he talks about his life of martial arts, and his analytical interest of body movement.
A huge thank you to Oshiro Sensei and his students, both in Okinawa and overseas, especially Kenji Hirai for setting up the interviews and translating.
Sensei: Masters of Okinawan Karate is a documentary series about the amazing martial arts teachers living on Okinawa, the birthplace of karate. It is completely free to watch on KZfaq, anywhere in the world! Series One has more than 1,000,000 views.
Visit the blog to learn how you can support Series Two. Coming in 2022!
travel67.com/the-karate-maste...
GOALS OF THE SERIES
1. Document the stories of Okinawan karate masters and their philosophy on life and their martial arts practice.
2. Record in the highest quality possible. Ideally 4K or 8K, RAW, multi camera, multi audio
3. Store the original data as an archival record.
4. Transcribe and translate the recordings to spread knowledge of Okinawan martial arts, history and culture.
5. Make the videos available for free online via KZfaq and Bujin.tv so that anyone, anywhere can see them.
The documentary series grew out of the Karate Masters Portrait Project which began in 2012. The portrait project allowed amazing access to the sensei, but it was only Chris Willson and James Pankiewicz who got to hear their stories. The documentary series is a way for us to share that unique knowledge with the international karate community.
The international karate community generously supported the first series.

Hey Sensei Ted Rabino, this is Sensei Terrell. Good to see your youtube channel posting. Everyone Sensei Rabino allowed me to train out of his Phoenix Az dojo in the 1980's when i was a student at UTI Universal Technical Institute. I graduated in 1986 then worked for Caterpillar Earthmoving Division. I will always be grateful to you for welcoming me into your dojo. 🤙

Thank you Oshiro Sensei! You’ve influenced me more than you know (and more than I knew) in the last year. The Bo Kata you’ve helped to pass down have challenged me tremendously and, as you say in your video, bojutsu has answered many of my karate questions. Also, I can see the San Bruno Omine Dojo from my bedroom window (must be the new peninsula location after Pacifica) Thank you, Oshiro Sensei. -Robert

Kishaba No Sai Sho kata ~Its a great sai kata. I first learned that Sai kata in the early 1990's. It was at the San Francisco, Ca Japan Town Yamanni-ryu Gasshuku. It was my second time of 6 timea of training with Oshiro Sensei personal sensei. Many of his students at that time had travelled far to train under Sensei Chogi Kishaba, Oshiro Sensei, and Nishimie Sensei. Sensei Gene Tibon who studied under my own Goju-ryu karate Sensei ( Shihan Rodney Hu Sr) was there with his students. Sensei Angel Lemus of Kaneohe Hawaii came in from Southern California at that time, Sensei Juan Carbajal Sr of Bakersfield California, Sensei Edward O' Darcey Clarke of Fresno and Bakersfield was training out of my own dojo came to train. He was Sensei Greg Dowels black belt. Plus many of Oshiro Sensei students like Sensei Eric Kluger who is teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after earning his black belt down in Brazil. good memories. I trained under Sensei Oshiro in the late 1980s to the 1990's. I had learned many sai kata from Oshiro Sensei. Kyan No Sai, Kishaba No Sai Sho and Kishaba No Sai Dai plus some basic sai kata Always grateful to have trained under Sensei Oshiro. The same goes for many of Oshiro Sensei Redwood City, California Dojo black belt students who helped me learn Yamanni ryu Kobudo. Thank you!

Chris, any chance you could interview and video 10th Dan Eishou Nakazato, nephew of Chibana chosin? Style is Shorin ryu, kobayashi-ryu. Any of his mature students whom would be 6th to 8th Dan also would be fantastic. I know you’ve photographed him in 2014, just wanting my styles Kaicho immortalised on the internet including thoughts and ideology. Thanks, from one of his many international students in Perth, Western Australia.

Hello, I learned BOJUTSU YAMANNI RYU with OSHIRO Sensei twenty years ago. On the occasion of my future trip to Okinawa next summer, I would like to practice YAMANNI RYU with OSHIRO Sensei, since he has returned to Okinawa, or with another Sensei who would like to welcome me to his dojo. Do you have any info please? Thanks in advance.

Hi guys can someone explain what he meant by "the enbusen is the opponent " in 33:44
@CatGaines
@CatGaines 3 жыл бұрын
The angle changes that you make... and the distances you move (forward/in place/back.... which foot first)... are properly determined (martial sense) by the location and action of your opponent.
@thomasheinze2049
@thomasheinze2049 3 жыл бұрын
"Enbusen" doesnt just mean a line you "walk on" while doing a kata - it means that in this direction there is your enemy which you have to care for like in a fight. So if you forget about the proper "enbusen" you (may) loose you target. Difficult to explain without being able to show.
@ApexKaratePerformance
@ApexKaratePerformance 3 жыл бұрын
Following up, Oshiro Sensei is referring to the 3-dimensional line from your centerline to the opponent’s centerline. You must move according to this line, and you do that by using your centerline as your “pivot” point, specifically when you change directions. However the majority of modern karate uses the feet as the pivot point, but that causes your centerline to shift and then your centerline becomes on a different “line”, one that the opponent is not actually on, and that no one is attacking you on.

Here I am doing our version of Fukyugata Ichi. If you conpare how I change directions and "turn", you can see that my centerline should stay in place when I change directions. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fNVposiludfUeIk.html
@GwennDana
@GwennDana 9 ай бұрын
It means that Embusen really is only the direction the opponent comes from, not the direction in which you "face" your body. Where you point your body to (rotating around its Centerline Seichusen) is independent from the Embusen. Also your body always rotates around its centerline to be able to move swiftly (or better "folds" around its center when moving so your center never gets out of balance, but a movement always has its counter movement to keep the center balanced). That'll be enough to practice for a couple of years :D :D
