Morinobu Maeshiro, 真栄城 守信 is 10th dan in Shorin-ryu Karate, and an Intangible Cultural Asset Holder in the Field of Okinawan Karate and Martial Arts with Weaponry. Highly respected by his peers and the international karate community, he remains a humble man who wishes to share his passion for karate with others. The interview took place at his dojo in Okinawa, Japan.
Sensei: Masters of Okinawan Karate is a documentary series about the amazing martial arts teachers living on Okinawa, the birthplace of karate. It is completely free to watch on KZfaq, anywhere in the world! Series One has more than 1,000,000 views and a fan community of 30,000+ on Facebook.
This series is supported but international karate community, and we need your help again. Learn more about the project here and how you can help here:
travel67.com/the-karate-maste...
GOALS OF THE SERIES
1. Document the stories of Okinawan karate masters and their philosophy on life and their martial arts practice.
2. Record in the highest quality possible. Ideally 4K or 8K, RAW, multi camera, multi audio
3. Store the original data as an archival record.
4. Transcribe and translate the recordings to spread knowledge of Okinawan martial arts, history and culture.
5. Make the videos available for free online via KZfaq, and on Bujin.tv so that anyone, anywhere can see them.
The documentary series grew out of the Karate Masters Portrait Project which began in 2012. The portrait project allowed amazing access to the sensei, but it was only Chris Willson and James Pankiewicz who got to hear their stories. The documentary series is a way for us to share that unique knowledge with the international karate community.

I'm a Shotokan practitioner. It's interesting to see the Tekki Kata done in the Shorin Ryu stances and different interpretations of the arm movements. I can see how Funakoshi Sensei adopted and changed the movements for Shotokan...since this is probably how he originally learned the kata.
@joumasepoes88

Yes it is how he learned it and how he taught it. It changed drastically after his death. If shorin ryu had a son in special ed classes it’s name would be shotokan. It’s not even a shadow of what Funakoshi sensei originally took to the mainland.

@@joumasepoes88 I am not so sure about this. There's a video available showing Funakoshi's method from 1924 which doesn't look much different in the way kata was performed or techniques executed than it does today.

Love this interview. An amazing character and you brought out the best in him. You are doing an absolutely brilliant job... what you are producing is art in itself. Like many Shorin stylists, he embodies the phrase "an iron fist in a velvet glove".

Very impressive teacher in his attention and kindness to his student seen in his thorough clean humble teaching style. I would apply with him if i wanted to learn karate. @@yogi8337 Iha Sensei shows more than explains when we train with him. He likes us apply it and coach us through on how to make it better. Maeshiro Sensei, most likely, does the same. Since this was an interview definitions are more fitting.

At his age, many can barely get off the bed. Amazing physical condition. And how on Earth did he managed to stay so thin, what did he eat?
@OkinawanSpirit
@OkinawanSpirit Жыл бұрын
I've thought about creating an episode talking about what older masters usually eat. In general it is plenty of rice, veggies, miso soup, some fish, limited meat, and limited portion sizes. Many of the masters drink socially but in moderation, I don't know any that smoke, and of course they all continue to exercise regularly even if it is not at the same level as in their youth.

I’ve met a lot of famous Martial Artists in my life, of course I had left over 15 years ago. A good friend of mine is up to his 9th Dan, his wife is 5th or 6th. I can’t get around anymore. I got up to my Ni Kyu and my health got the worst of me.
