When it comes to separating art from the artist, it is a personal thing it’s up to the listeners.

I liked your take on this subject and it does come down to personal choice. Outside of music two of my biggest heroes are Lovecraft and Burroughs, both extreme dicks in their own way. Their art literally shaped my personality of today. I can accept and argue that they were bad people, but the positive influence they had on their peers and fans is just too big to be cancelled from history or culture. The best thing to do is to educate yourself on their actions, don't accept it and advise others that the art is good but the artist is bad. Again, appreciate your view on this subject

Honestly, there are some artists in terms of both music and other forms of entertainment who I can't separate their art from, this can be because their flaws are so directly present in their work (see Led Zeppelin, and songs like Sick Again), or because they're still profiting from new sales which can enable them to do or say more heinous things (JK Rowling). However, amidst all the bad stuff about them, I can respect that their work did inspire future positive role models, and I guess that's the important thing

Sick Again is not a pro-pedophilia song. If anything it’s anti-pedophilia because it’s about feeling sorry for the underage groupie girls who so willingly threw themselves at these grown men they barely know
@curly_wyn
@curly_wyn Жыл бұрын
@@ethanwork764 Are you blaming the girls? The song isn’t really advocating pedophilia, but at the same time, it’s not anti-pedo. No group that’s made up of people who have been misogynistic and a guitar who kidnapped a 14 yr old girl for fuck knows what can really be considered anti-pedo. Led Zeppelin shouldn’t be cancelled, but their morally terrible behavior should be a part of their legacy, and not swept under the rug. Enjoying the art is ultimately up to you, but they’re not the kind of people anyone should be putting on a pedestal.

The Ken Stringfellow discoveries were crushing. They were a truly incomparably talented band, with some of the most enigmatically beautiful songs in alternative rock, and he wrecked it. My 30 year connection to The Posies' music was deep and personal, but I couldn't bear to listen to them after learning those details and be reminded of all that he ruined. Only today have I started listening to them again. I guess time lessened my disgust and my affection for their artistry asserted itself once again. This video refreshed the initial horror I felt, but like you said the rest of the band does not deserve the shunning that he created. Still a pall will always hover around the corners of what used to be bright and pure.

A good perspective. It’s such a nuanced and complex moral dilemma that doesn’t have an easy answer or solution, but while I understand that many can easily separate the art from the artist while still acknowledging their behavior or actions, I quite simple just can’t. I can’t do it.

I understand how people can't separate the art from the artist. But I don't think it's something anyone should be shamed for not doing. It is impossible to make sure every piece of art you appreciate was created by someone who is a morally north person. You just can't. Especially if you don't pay for it
@Chudchanning
@Chudchanning Жыл бұрын
Truly great art often comes from dark places and troubled people. One of the issues with trying to banish artists or creators is that the world is not a simplistic moral division of black and white. Human beings are extremely complicated and there are many shades of Grey.. Sure, it's easy to cancel the low hanging fruit and feel morally superior afterward, but at the end of the day every single person is guilty of hurting somebody else, saying something awful whether they mean it or not, or is described as a monster by another person on the planet. I personally find it harder to separate art from an artist when that art specifically conveys concepts and beliefs I stand against, but when it comes to somebody like Morrissey (or dare I say Burzum for the black metal fans) who's a known piece of shit that happened to write some legitimately great songs in my subjective opinion, I don't feel so guilty for listening. Especially when I had grown attached to said music long before getting online and learning all the complicated issues behind the artists. Then again I legitimately find the humor in Anal Cunt, so maybe I'm just a bad person with bad music taste. Movie fans will drag you for liking jeepers creepers but avidly celebrate the greatness of Rosemary's baby. It's all subjective, and liking or disliking media does not make you morally superior

it’s a difficult choice to make when an artist you admire does something morally reprehensible. there are 2 recent examples that come to mind for me: Mark Kozelik (Red House Painters, SunKilMoon), and Michael Gira (Swans). I own a bunch of their albums and it’s fair to say I’m conflicted about supporting the work with the knowledge of what they’ve done.

I’ve always took that stance as long as they didn’t use their fanbase as a weapon against their victims like Dahvie did and as long as they didn’t use their fame or career as part of the crime i.e making someone have sex with you for a role or something then I can separate the art from the artist unless it’s someone who is racist, homophobic, transphobic, etc then it’s like if they are still alive no but if dead sure since they won’t make money off it, I think it’s ignorant arguing that you can’t separate it or shouldn’t try to because many people who say that still read “Lord of the Flies” and pay money to see Picasso painting because despite them both being terrible people yet when it’s a musician it’s somehow different to them, like we separate art from artist all the time in this world and don’t realize it when we look at paintings or read old books so why should we view it differently for anything else? Charles Manson was a mega racist yet Lexii Alijai a black rapper sampled one of his songs and the song she sampled by him is literally amazing and I can say that and still hate the man who made it since his art didn’t commit his crimes hints why an artist of color would use a sample of his work, the artists committed the crimes not the art and if you’ve ever took an English class or been to a classic art gallery then you’ve already separated art from artist so why normalize it there and not everywhere else that’s just hypocritical really like I get not wanting to support the artist but you can view their work without directly supporting them so I don’t see the difference really, but I do respect the opinions of those who don’t separate the art for personal reasons as long as they don’t try to say “you can’t separate it and be a good person” or “I’d never do something like that” because those people make themself a hypocrite every time they turn on their tv and it’s annoying trying to deal with them when they preach so hard for something they couldn’t be bothered to actually practice outside of the world of music.

I totally agree that some of the musicians I love are pieces of shit to others. But it doesn't ruin my love for their music. No matter how many stupid or horrible things Axl Rose, David Ellefson, Sebastian Bach, Kurt Cobain, Gene Simmons, and Marilyn Manson have done, I still enjoy listening to the music. I still love KISS, Megadeth, GNR, Nirvana, Skid Row, and Manson. Nobody's perfect and musicians are just like people where they fuck up and do wrong things. But the music will live on forever and I will love it for the rest of my life.

Jesse Lacey/Brand New was the big hard one for me. I’ve chosen to separate art from his actions because of just how much Brand New has meant to me for over a decade. They made me want to make my own music and very rightly saved my life. But goddamn Jesse, you fucked things up by being a creep all those years ago.

It depends on the offense. Some things can be forgiven while others are much too vile and I can never view the artist the same nor appreciate the art from them ever again.

I'm a person that cannot separate the art from the artist. Because I'm usually invested in that artist's music AND life. Like I loved the offspring and when the whole Greg k thing happened I dropped all of my love for them even though they were my favourite band for years. I'm pretty good with finding bands with no douchebags in them nowadays. My favs are the damned and many obscure french punk bands. Dave Vanian and Captain can be sometimes frustrating, (cough cough the 90s.) but they're way better than all the people you mentioned!!!

Fantastic and interesting video. I agree with pretty much everything you said. For me it depends on what the artist did and how it affects how I listen to their music. I could love an artist, but once the news comes out it could get me in a bad mood while listening to their music. I always do try to separate the art from the artist, but if an artist does something that really leaves a bad taste in my mouth then it could affect how I perceive their music, especially if the artist is a frontman or primary songwriter.

Good video, I agree with most of it. Your voting section for example is probably the only part I disagree with maybe, you talk about marginalized groups and voting for their sake, but what group? It's trendy to support LGBT+ stuff now but what happens if it's not? For example I voted 3rd party in 2012 because I couldn't support Obama's drone bullshit anymore, and couldn't vote for Mitt Romney, so I voted for the sake of the marginalized group of innocent people Obama was slaughtering. Someone else told me they were voting for him because he (suddenly once election year rolled around) supported same-sex marriage. Which group should I have cared about then? It's insane how quickly we can all turn on an issue. I wen't to an anti-war rally in 2006 that had thousands to find myself being the only anti-war person I knew once it became a Democrats war. I think just pointing at the current issue instead of looking at every issue equally isn't a good idea in the long run. Just my thoughts though, something I've been wrestling with every election since 2012 and your point on it made me sperg a bit, it seems.

Well, I'm a leftist. And part of being a leftist is supporting democrats despite hating them, just because they're nearly always better than the republicans. I'd rather fake support and apathy from my government than outright contempt anyday. And yeah, it may be trendy with younger people to support LGBTQ people, but the old boomers still don't like us, make no mistake. Sure, all the big corporations change their logos to rainbows during pride month, but that doesn't mean much when trans people are being stripped of their rights everyday, and teachers aren't allowed to explain that some kids "have two dads, or two mums".

i dunno, i'm sort of split over if i could support an artist if they're bad people. i guess it kinda comes down to the crime for me. like, if they raped minors or beat the shit out of women, then i'd totally stop supporting them, but if they said something hateful, i might be able to overlook it, since, in my opinion, saying awful things isn't as bad as doing awful things. i mean, it would also depend on what they said though. like if they said trans people are delusional for wanting to change their gender or black people are genetically dumber and more violent, i'd probably stop supporting them, but if they maybe made a distasteful joke about the Holocaust or used a dumb voice when playing a disabled person (like, whenever someone is telling a story about someone and they change their voice to indicate that someone else in the story is talking) i guess i could overlook it. i mean, we're humans and we sometimes say hurtful or even offensive things at some point, because we're not perfect, and we usually regret it. so if they said or did something hurtful and genuinely regretted it, i could forgive them. luckily i've never had to be in a situation like that, since all the artists i like are, for the most part, good people.
