Separating The Art From The Artist - Who Benefits From It?

I'm back to ramble about my personal experience and give some humble advice regarding the topic of separating the art from the artist (and the different levels of support towards them) and who benefits from this the most in my opinion. In this video I only talk about (metal) musicians and bands, but of course many of the points are also true for other genres or music in general (and no, Marilyn Manson and Rammstein are not only a clickbait-y thumbnail).
I also hope you enjoy my great PowerPoint visuals.
Let me know if you stopped supporting an artist, for which reasons and who it was in the comments!
Thanks for watching 🖤

I really like your videos and the fact that you don't upload them everyday. Sounds very organic. You're fighiting the good fight! (:

ive been a rammstein fan for some years now and they got me into metal, so they're important to me indeed. Personally i haven't stopped listening to them. I never bought any merchandise or went to a concert, but for other reasons. If i had a tshirt or something i honestly dont know what i would have done, however it's true that all the controvery hasn't stopped me listening to them. Anyways your opinion on the controversy will affect how u view the band now. For me, as long as i know at least, nothing has been proved. Im not idiot, the fact that he wasn't condemned because of lack of evidences doesn't mean he didn't do anything wrong, plus he surely had very good lawyers. From there, everyone can have their own opinion, some say he indeed do that, others don't. However, i dont like the parties he did after the shows. He took advantage of his importance to some women because of his art just so he could have sex with them. While it's true it was consensual, it's just something i wouldn't imagine myself doing, regardless of how much the women wanted it.

I used to swear by separating the art from the artist in my collage years but honestly as controversies have landed around artists I've previously loved (Deathspell Omega and their work with Mikko Aspa, Alexis Marshall of Daughters being outed as an abusive PoS for example), it just seems that I stop enjoying the music, probably in the same vein as your disgust of the person overshadowing the love of the art, only a suddenly shift as opposed to a gradual one. The only exception for me would be Neurosis after Scott Kelly publicly admitted to the abuse of his family, which I think mainly is down to how the rest of the band handled it. (booted him with no hesitation and refused to build a media circus around it to protect the families privacy.) Another interesting perspective might be an artist heavily influenced by a controversial figure, would you say Manson's music also influenced your own work or was your love of it separate from artistic inspiration? Anyway great video, you do great work in general based on the couple of videos I've seen and I hope the best for your channel.

I agree that if it's a band and other band members don't try to hide or protect the person in question it can really change my perception. As in your example, if they kick them out and show that this is not what they all stand for this shouldn't have negative consequences for them (if they didn't enable the behaviour previously). But it also depends a bit on the band's image and message. I just thought of the punk band Anti-Flag - they've always positioned themselves as feminist and anti-violence etc. So when it came to light that one of three members has basically done the opposite and maybe even used their image to make women feel safer around him for decades, it was really disappointing. But to answer your question - I don't think any of my music was influenced by Manson as I already stopped listening to them when I started writing my own music. I think in general it's ok to be inspired (we're inspired by all sorts of things all the time) if you're not glorifying that artist and praising them without critically thinking/talking about that they're an awful person.

this is such a weirdly personal video because I too was a marilyn manson fan! not only did i listen to his music during tough times but also I relate to his experience of grappling with his religious background and his faithlessness. that being said, when i heard all the allegations against him it made sense to me because when i was younger i saw him being somewhat creepy towards women during interviews, and while it had made me feel uncomfortable back then, i thought it was okay since it was my hero and he could do no wrong haha. like you, the whole thing is more than the enjoyment i get from listening to his music, in fact, for some reason i just don't feel anything listening to his music anymore. maybe i felt too betrayed by his actions. on the other hand, I don't support rammstein, certain bands with interesting political choices and certain record labels that silence the victims, but I still listen to their music (in ways that don't pay them money let's just say). not sure why that is - maybe because they weren't AS personal to me as MM was. your video really made me think about the whole spectrum and how i relate to different parts of it - so thank you for this interesting discussion (and the visuals - they were quality!).

Thanks! What a coincidence that you were also a big MM fan. To be honest I didn't really understand the creepy behaviour towards women when I was younger (which is concerning). But I discovered Dita Von Teese because of him and I'm still a big fan of hers, so there's that :D And I get that you might have felt more betrayed by your "idol" than another band you didn't feel so strongly about. Like I said, it really feels like a (parasocial) relationship and it makes total sense to feel more betrayed by someone you "loved".

Ted Nugent was a formative artist for me growing up, but due to his current stances and some other stuff that came out about his past, I can't support him financially anymore - no content, no concerts, no merch. But I still enjoy the music he made along with the memories I made alongside it - no one gets to take that away from me, not even Ted. So I'll listen to stuff I have whenever I feel ike it, but he's done making money off my fandom.

When you've been in enough fandoms with horrible people that created them you just naturally come to accept seperating art from the artist and doubting all men of being capable of behaving themselves helps whenever you feel let down so that you don't feel let down again, I still listen to Manson and Rammstein but I would be lying if I said that I don't feel a little bit guilty enjoying artists that abuse women, I just hope that we can create enough of a discussion around this so that other artists and fandom creators don't take us for fools and break our trust because we are the ones that make them money and we can take that away

For me it was Iced Earth. Jon Schaffer just had to be one of those guys who went "sightseeing" in the Capitol. Worst thing is that no matter how much I don't like what he has done I still don't want to punish the other band members for it as they have nothing to do with it and don't agree with it either, so I don't know what to do with it. So far I haven't listened to them since learning about Schaffer joining the raid and I've never had any merch from them but I don't know how I should act from here on out.

@@aprilmazae4811 Nah that's probably not a good idea :D She's for sure a very controversial figure. I think getting a tattoo of an artist that is still alive is not really a safe idea as you never know what they'll do. As a teen I would have loved a MM tattoo but I'm glad I wasn't old enough yet...

Manson as well for me. Had little if any merch but threw out all my favorite music artist's albums, however, now I'm given hope that the worst parts of the accusations were lies. ... In the meantime, I've replaced him with Kiki Rockwell.

I sold all my Daughters stuff when I found out and I speak other people on it when they share something from that band aswell. If they know how big an asshole he is. I don't wear anything from their merch I have. It's just a moral thing I think. I am quitte strict in these things when it comes to people being toxic. I also speak people to it when they support toxic artist. I did it for MM and Till and I get really fucked up comments in my inbox but I am totally done with those fuckers! I lost friends because of it but I will speak up because it's just wrong! Great video! Keep up the good work! Love the powerpoint presentation hahaha!

Thank you! And I think it's great you point it out to people. Sometimes they might not know or sometimes they just might think that nobody cares anyway and then it's important to show that there are of course people who care. I'm sorry that you get stupid messages from people, but there are also some fans who think their idols can't do anything wrong. In a way they also cannot separate the art from the artist - they like the art and therefore they like the artist no matter what they do. It's difficult to argue with these fans.

i listen to alot of black metal, im not sure how many ppl are like this bc im still somewhat new to the scene but ive seen quite a bit from one person i talked to who was dismissive abt how i was making my concerns against them (with a seemingly rude attitude) listening to a very known fascist band. they werent fash themselves but lemme explain first. so this is the psychlogical/mental health claim for me. idk how many others have experienced it but i basically like the old black metal music alot and theyre visuals and aesthetic, which usually has fascist messaging or ideology. either way very hard to avoid (i know there is nonfash ones but omg there is just so many more fash than nonfash). You could ignore it but since i was autistic(and i take things in more heavily and easily if i care enough) i couldnt really ignore bc it was slowly affecting me unconsiously. how do i know this? i have a system or DID system (look it up) and one of my alter's was adapting these idelogies and almost destroyed the system. once one of my other alters found out abt this they were removed from the area and eventually split (a alter that is no more and has gone to a different alter. could vary on what it is). After that happened i had to stop listening bc i didnt want that situation to happen again. very stressful.i just stick to the stuff in the 2010s-2020s for rn. i havent approrached 2000s bm yet or thing adjacent to it. and that person i was talking abt higher up in this message i believed to be also non neurotypical and im wondering if it was affecting him the same. so dismissing my concerns like that i found later on to be more annoying bc not addressing could be the end of you bc of how dangerous this can get if not done responsibly. another thing. if you arent familiar with bm the thing is with the fascist stuff is it can be very easy to not see unless you see its core of the lyrics. thats when you see it. they make it hidden n shit. its pretty shit. im saying this if anyones wondering why i would be into it in the first place. Tl;dr i cant seperate the art from the artist bc im autistic and what not. i just cant ignore it bc of this. and i think ppl are weirded out by it when i raise concerns like it.

Thanks for sharing all of that. I've actually been thinking about making a video about racism in black metal and alternatives and resources how to check a band's background. What ties into this a lot is this notion of "keep politics out of metal" in my opinion as I've only really seen it to silence people who voice concerns e.g. about racism. I had a bit of a black metal phase a couple of years ago, too, btw.

@@itzanowski ive seen alot of these sketch ppl saying theyre "apoloticial" (this is likely a deflect to the question when theyre asked abt politics) but that answer never made sense with whats already given in the music. my view rn of the bm community is just alot of it is conservative and a small portion of it isprogressive or its somewhere in between it can get interesting. ive been a huge fan of trha for awhile now which is how i got into bm in general. and it seems Trhä isone of or themost progressive in bm in general. i havent heard anything like it and there community has been great as a queer, trans and otherkin person. i want to take that knowledge and use the other knowledge i had to create smth. i jsut need time rn. but thats where i am at rn
