Evert even at her best could not have competed with the power players. Everts indeed fortunate to have played in an era devoid of cannon forehands & backhands.

Honestly Graf got to show off other great parts of her game playing Serena. Her lobs are so unplayably good. And Serena in full competition mode can pull off some amazing lob winners. One shot I felt like she used a lot more than her sister.

Except for Monica Seles & an in form, prime Martina Navratilova, I've never seen a player hit so many winners & aces against the quickness of Steffi Graf like Serena(& Venus).

Graf lost here by a narrow margin, but was on her way back up after all the injuries and was able to win the French Open again a bit later same year. To retire shortly after Wimbledon was nevertheless the right decision. It would not have been good for her to continue duelling with the Williams with her battered body.

Facts about steffi : Off prime for sure, but with infinite experience . Reached this final, wimbledon final and won RG, so definitely playing better than most of the players(tbh only venus was better than her at that time). About serena : Inexperienced, just 1 title, not a favourite at all and was bad at the net. Clearly an incomplete game but still managed to defeat steffi. God knows what she wouldv'e done to steffi in 2012 ....

How fortunate we all are as tennis fans to witness two of the best female tennis athletes of all time battling for this title! Steffi at the twilight of her career while Serena’s was ascending in 1999. Steffi’s forehand winner was fire 🔥 at 7:54. Amazing how powerful her forehand winner was against a difficult backhand drive from Serena. Steffi’s lightning speed and footwork allowed her to run around and hit her famous forehand from the backhand corner. I know it’s all about her athleticism, timing and effortless technique. I can’t help but compare Steffi’s godly forehand to powerful forehands today where you can see how much effort current players exert to generate power while taking advantage of racquet and string innovations. Though you have to acknowledge Serena by showing us the result of hitting a forehand with a lot of effort and strength starting at 10:58 I wonder how Steffi’s forehand, which is the greatest forehand ever, would look in the modern game with all the racquet/string technology. Combined with her athleticism and uncanny accuracy, it would be a more heavier and deadlier forehand! Her backhand slice was the best ever too! No one, not even current players today (with the exception of Roger Federer), can hit a knifing slice like Steffi. With racquet/string innovations, it would be “Death by a Thousand Cuts”! If I could put both Steffi and Serena in the same era (either in the late 80s to mid 90s or in 2000s at their very best), I’d go anywhere to see the Greatest Forehand vs. the Best Serve battle it out and compete for grand slam titles!!!

It's a crazy tennis universe. Graf's final years and last year (1999) to play professional tennis and she faced a batch of new players who are Monica Seles fans. Serena, Venus, Martina Hingis, Anna Kournikova were all Monica Seles fans. Graf could have stayed in the game until 38yo like Navratilova if her back stayed healthy. Maybe realistically until 34yo as Graf does want to retire and to have a family. But alas Graf got another injury and retired after Wimbledon 1999. It would have been great to see how Graf handle her game in her early 30s. Graf was a gifted athlete in speed but not in strength. Navratilova had it all except mental strength. Navratilova's mental strength was medium compared to everything else that was superb. Serena could be the next player that has all the physical gifts, and mental strength. But her skills not as polished compared to Hingis. I think because Serena skipped the junior years. Worth it? To skip juniors and to save the body to endure the pro years was genius planning. Serena perhaps by skipping the junior years, her body remained strong throughout the pro years. Versus Graf who did play in juniors and she had multiple injuries throughout her pro years. But Graf's technique for the forehand was probably more responsible for causing injury. Graf's lateness in hitting the forehand over time caused a lot of stress to her body; hence the injuries.

This is a very diffrent Graff compare to 2-3 yrs prior, now she's playing a oponent as good if not betterthan her who isn't afraid to hit the ball hard and attack, as the saying goes there is always somone better than you, i would have loved to see th eprime Graff against prime serena.

It's really to bad their primes didn't more directly intersect. Graf was legendary. So was Serena. Hell, so was Venus. I salute all 3 along with Ms. Navratilova. My 4 favorite tennis players ever, male or female.

This was a great match and showed that Steffi was back after more than a year of struggling after surgery. She went on to win the FO and be a Wimbledon finalist. She was probably not going to be #1 but was in the top 5 and could certainly have won more major championships.

I would have loved to have seen Serena at her peak take on Steffi at her peak. Steffi would not have earned nearly as many slams if the Williams Sisters had played in the same era. A peak Serena would take down anything Graf has to offer. Serena has a far better serve, and while Graf was the far better tennis mover, Serena would neutralize that with more power off both wings and her legendary off the mark foot speed. Serena would love to hit against Graf's forehand all day, only makes her strokes better off the ground as Maria and Venus showed. Graf owes a at least a few of her major wins to a fearless, solid number 1 Seles getting stabbed out of the game at the peak of her career. How sad that was for all of us.
