Here is a pretty clean copy of the 1973 Berlin film of one of George Balanchine's earliest masterpices. Principal women in order of apperance are Kay Mazzo, Sara Leand, Karin von Aroldingen, and Peter Martins and Jean Pierre Bonnefoux. The lighting is different than it was on stage, but the musical tempi is correct.

Ah yes, the grand old days when Balanchine was alive and all his dancers knew he was always watching- this is a treasure of full-bodied freedom of movement. I was in my 2nd year of teaching and some of the corps de ballet (can't identify any) began taking my classes on 72nd Street above the Royal Bakery

This is the NYCB of my memories. ...when I was in the audience 3 nights a week...It still takes my breath away. Thank you so much for sharing this masterpiece.

Pure genius - I was actually at SAB the summer of ‘73. I went to as many performances as I could. With Farrell gone, McBride & Mazzo were dancing a lot. Everyone was fantastic!

This is the most beautiful Balanchine ballet- so happy to see it here! I attended SAB the summer of 1974 and these dancers were my idols.

Thank you so much John, again, it s so beautiful! I truly think the dancers today seems lack those pure Balanchine aesthetic with all the details, I mean the every part of body to be expressive, and true dancing from inside. Thank you again John. Btw, just finished your book (have both audio and hard copy). It s a amazing book, made well so moved..

I like the unstudied, slightly ragged look to the dancing. It feels alive. Today the piece sometimes seems over reverential and self important.

Inspired!! Thank you - the quality of this performance is incredible. I have seen Serenade in person in the past 10 years and while the dancers were lovely, the performance sadly, did not compare to this.

Thank you so much for posting this! I just had the absolute pleasure of seeing the NYCB perform this piece in Madrid, and it was *breathtaking*. So graceful and dreamlike, so emotional, yet so precise and synchronized and energetic. The dancers gave 100%. I came away yearning to share it with my niece, and this is the only video that *feels* like what I just saw, even if the lighting is more stark. The dancers are SO expressive and SO all-in. Thank you again!

I know Mr. B. did not particularly like the German films of his ballets, but I think this one is very beautiful. The lighting emphasizes the spirituality of the piece especially. Surprised that Mazzo did not "let down her hair." I wonder when that touch was added.

Third comment. I cannot believe this entire ballet, all its fast paced, unique, (undoubtedly one-of-a-kind), elegant, gloriously intricate choreography was planned by one single man. One almost inhumanly genius man! There will never be another Balanchine.

Very nice, lovely . . . . . thank you for posting. I watched National Ballet of Canada dance Apollo yesterday, and with Serenade today, I am getting a good dose of Balanchine choreography and I love it. I recognized his iconic “galloping horses” step from Apollo in Serenade’s choreography too. Thanks again 🥰👏❤️👏

Such purity and loveliness. Pure beauty. Stunning and charming. So many words cannot describe the breathtaking joy Balanchine's works like this give me. He was a genius among geniuses. Whenever I am depressed or having a bad day I see works like Serenade, Symphony in C, Jewels, Chaconne, Allegro Brilliante, Ballo della Regina etc....and I am refreshed. Yet without a breath! His works have me on the edge of my seat. And all the lovely flowing dresses. Sigh.

I know Balanchine did not like the fancy camera work in this film, which obscures the dancers' moves here and there. Yet it's still my favorite of the filmed versions. There's nothing horribly egregious in the editing, and much of it is quite effective in highlighting the energy of the music and dance. The color and shadow is gorgeous. The dancers here seem wonderfully free and fearless, in a way that is not quite so true in the later version filmed for Dance In America, excellent as it is. Besides, I've always had a soft spot for that moment in the first movement when the tulle catches on the dancer's wrist. It appears to be a happy accident, but I suspect the filmmaker conspired with the ballerina to make it happen!

Lovely performance. Pity the video crew thought they were supposed to be creative rather than letting the performance stand on its own.

lt would be nice if ALL the dancers were listed so we can see ones we learn about, and go ''Ah yes! She was _here_ in 1977's Serenade.'' lt IS 1977 ...according to the copy write on the film.

Kirkland didn’t go to Berlin with the company for this 1973 filming. Also she left NYCB in 1974 so couldn’t have been in any SERENADE.
