It's the 2016 World Chess Championship Match challenger Sergey Karjakin versus Baskaran Adhiban, the 24-year-old from India who competed in and won the 2016 Tata Steel Challengers section. What would be the result when an atypical opening, at least at the top level, is employed by Adhiban? How would Karjakin treat the Adhiban's French Defense from Round 5 of the 2017 Tata Steel Chess Tournament Masters section?
PGN:
1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. e5 Nfd7 5. f4 c5 6. Nf3 Nc6 7. Be3 { C11 French Defense: Steinitz Variation, Boleslavsky Variation } Be7 8. Qd2 a6 9. a3 O-O 10. dxc5 Nxc5 11. Qf2 Nd7 12. Nd4 Nxd4 13. After his 16th move Adhiban's clock shows 107:01 (at 8:44). So he made his first 16 moves in 59 seconds. Wow.

A Super GM shouldn't have a "prep". At their level they should be very comfortable playing almost all lines.

Did I say they should? I said 'pretty bad really' for a reason. Unless you're agreeing with me, in which case ok.

If you notice the book ends at move 8, if you didn’t prep this line, then you’d be screwed on the clock, Adhiban had all the time in the world

How is the French Defense an "atypical" opening, though? I don't understand.
@TheGoldenRare
@TheGoldenRare 7 жыл бұрын
D. Val It's just atypical in high level chess. Not to say the opening is necessarily bad or unplayable but at the high level, the most common responses to e4 is e5 (king's pawn game) or c5 (the Sicilian).

Yuko Suimas Rg1 Kh8 0-0-0 gxf4 gxf4 Qxf4+ Qxf4 Rxf4 and black is just up a pawn. if u can't imagine this far ahead it's the same position as in 9:51 except h1 rook is on g1 and king is on h8. u have no dark squared bishop or queen to exploit black king's position and u r a pawn down.

White should almost never castle queenside. The only time White wants to castle queenside is if they have a strong mating attack. For whatever reason, it seems like a White queenside castle always results in a distraught castle structure that fails quickly.

And yes, agreeing with another commentator: being another 1800-player myself, I can only wonder at how this guy was almost on the verge of defeating Carlsen in the WC match. Extremely poor performance. Qf2?? Maybe the French is coming into fashion again. I hope so, because I always play it against 1. e4!
