One of the most original young talents at the elite level, the 20-year-old Richard Rapport from Hungary, is paired against the current World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen in Round 8 of the 2017 Tata Steel Chess Tournament. What would be the result when an atypical beginning w/ 2. b3, at least in top level play, is thrown at the World Champion. How would Carlsen treat Rapport's Nimzovich-Larsen attack?

As a Hungarian amateur hobby player, I'm extremely proud of GM Rapport after this win. My fellow-countryman defeated the world champion, how cool is that! That will stir up some storm in the Hungarian chess communities.

I've been following the games of Richard Rapport for a couple of years now. He employs a lot of non-standard openings and "thinks outside the box." I dig it when they think outside the box. He isn't always successful, but when he is, it's typically a memorable game.

This was amazing. Recently I saw a video from the Saint Louis chess club, with Maurice Ashley, who made a statement about Kasparov's calculation abililty, and wondered out loud, "how does anyone beat that guy?" I'm wondering the same thing about both players here; even though Carlsen lost, both players were very solid apart from the minor inaccuracies that were immediately pounced on by Rapport ... and also Rapport for his inventiveness paired with the ability to also be extremely solid.

Great video, can someone explain to me a double fianchetto is?
@Mezekaldon
@Mezekaldon 7 жыл бұрын
At 1:43, white places his dark squared bishop on b2. That bishop is now fianchettoed, which is a fancy term for having it on b2. At 3:25, white moves his light squared bishop to g2, and that bishop is now fianchettoed. Again, just a fancy term for white having his light squared bishop on g2. With both bishops arranged like that, white has a double fianchetto. Only bishops can be fianchettoed, and only on b2 and g2 for white, and b7 and g7 for black.
@matiasg1234
@matiasg1234 7 жыл бұрын
The Real PyroManiac a fianchetto is when (as white) you move the B pawn to B3 and deployed the dark bishop in B2, same story with the G pawn and white bishop...

As an Italian I love to see "fianchetto" conjugated to the past in the english way, and I acknowledge it's the only way to make everybody understand it. If you'll ever feel like boasting, though, the bishop is "fianchettato" is the correct Italian conjugation :D Useless comment, I know, but... Hey :)

Thanks for such an elaborate game. One quick comment (probably a dumb one) - at 22:15, bishop to C6 was definitely a great move. What if White goes knight to f6? Black has to move his rook, and if he tries to place rook at e2 (to give protection to d3 pass pawn), then bishop to f1 would kick.

Very nice analysis and good game for white, Richard is a great player, i thought Carlsen will do something and reversed the situation but Richard play very solidly, that's simply awesome.. just one thing that i want to know, why on 13:25 white played bishop to h3? i know the bishop is eyeing for the black knight but i don't see any benefit or potential threat from that move,,

GD Sylver if 33. Kf8, then Nxc5! because the black queen can't move or there is checkmate, so no rush for white. Then g5 or something. Rxe8, Qxe8, Bxe8, Nxd3. Game over.
@newpgaston6891
@newpgaston6891 7 жыл бұрын
It wouldn't change anything. after ...Kf8 34 Rxe8+ Qxe8 35 Bxe8 Kxe8 36 Nxc5 white has a knight for the d3 pawn, and black will never be able to push the pawn (d2 is covered, can also be blocked by the knight and when white brings the other knight to b3, that 2 knight 1 pawn structure will be impossible to break for black. The white king has all the time in the world to come in. the 2 good black pawns are basically dead. White is playing with 2 minor pieces against 1, and one of White's pawn is passed and will be pushed all the way/until black trades his bishop for it, and then it's an easy win anyway.
