I just thought of something...many of us first did these types of projects back before the internet. I went to the library to read books but there were not many on how to tile. Remodeling was really a challenge at times. This couple do their research and and their common sense and can accomplish these tasks like professionals.

That tile pattern is called, "subway". The tile adhesive you are using is not mortar, it's an adhesive (but correct for those tiles vertically). It's always best to start at the bottom, space off the level solid horizontal surface, then each course above it is spaced off of the course below. This allows a bit of support so tiles don't slide. The ideal trowel for those tiles with that adhesive has small notches like alligator teeth (1/8" to 3/16" deep). The tile saw is fine but don't be afraid of the diamond blade. Flip up that guard and free hand cut boogers and such. When grouting, just fill the spaces with the edge of the float. Don't waste your time floating grout over the entire tile. Wet sponge after 30 to 45 minutes, and allow the wet grout to finish your float using the sponge. A second wet sponging after the grout has chalked up (about an hour). Then buff the tile with a bath towel. One last tip, NEVER grout into corners. Leave that gap to be filled with grout matching caulk. Otherwise, your corner grout will crack in just one season.

Level a line a row or 2 off the bottom and cut to the bottom from it and work up. Fireplaces never use mastic only thin set as mastic will melt(from what I was taught in the early 80s, never did it any other way to be safe, old school is always best). 1/4 notch trowel is the correct size for that tile, it allows for some build out but not too much where shit is squirting out the joints. I the case of small tiles like they are using, I even spread the whole damn piece, and I am a stickler for neat and clean when grouting and very rarely spread whole pieces, in fact rarely use more then 1 bucket(3 1/2 gallon mastic bucket) to wash over 100 feet at a time leaving it completely clean first wash. NEVER use that crappy sanded color caulk(grout it normal and pure clear silicon, will NEVER crack), up here it will crack in less then 6 months in the temperature change...You have MUCH to learn Padawan

I wondered if they should have started at the bottom.. then the thin piece would have been at the top like a cap.. But, they did a beautiful job, the tiles didn’t slip and it looks great! Good job!

The corner really confused me but I watched quite a few videos to see how people stagger it there to be the most pleasing to the eye. We definitely have more to learn 🙂 the way we tried to make it look is like one tile (full size) alternating but also keeping in mind not making it too small.

@@SimpleLivingAlaska you guys did that corner great, especially with relatively smaller size of the tiles for your first tiling job. Usually an aluminium straight edge is used at bottom to rest on and tiles get layed row wise from bottom to top, but it really doesn't matter of you have laser leveling device at your disposal.

Hot tips from the internet: 1. Start at the bottom with a leveling board 2. Trowel the morter so the groves/troughs are along the shortest side (the opposite way you did) 3. Wriggle the tiles as you bed them so the air escapes and you get 100% morter coverage on the back of the tile.

If it doesn't come out completely clean, do it a second time. then polish the glass with paper towels. you will be amazed at how quickly the pane gets clean, even without chemical cleaners. I wish you success

To me the key in doing tile is starting in your corner is just as you would wallpaper and going out not the other way around! Look beautiful regardless!

Actually I've always done tile like laying brick and water down your grout it goes in quicker and easier several things that would have made it a little faster but they're learning and they do great they work so good together 🐝

Start your tiles row that are behind the stove, at the bottom. If you find you have to cut tiles (height) like they did to the bottom row, go with larger or smaller grout so you wont need to cut tiles height off.

Eric & Arielle Well done ! Since I burn woodstoves for 50 years I give you 2 things to consider 1 light your stove with the “ Swiss “ method - top down 2 buy yourself a more modern woodstove with secondary burn and window wash Best Wishes from the Netherlands
