In this video, I show you what I did to clean up and set up a very cheap jazz archtop guitar. This is a Jay Turser Monterey that I featured in a video a while back. During this setup, I did all kinds of things, including showing you what I do to clean guitars when I get them. I also show you what I do to perform a simple neck and intonation adjustment. I ended up getting this guitar to play pretty well, and I was pretty happy with the end result. Let me know if you have any questions. Leave me a comment, and thanks for watching!
Also, I have hundreds of other lessons for guitar players who like Jazz, Blues, Bebop, and Fingerstyle guitar arrangements. There are also a lot of lessons on guitar technique and guitar scales, along with exercises meant to build your chops. Check them all out here: guitarcollegelibrary.com/

About Rich:
Originally from the L.A. area, Rich has been playing professionally and teaching guitar for over thirty years. His education includes years of college and private instruction with a variety of teachers, including Mitch Holder, Ted Greene, Joe Pass, and Charlie Shoemake, to name a few. He feels education is a continuing process. There's always more to learn. Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Howard Roberts, Ted Greene, and Larry Carleton have all influenced his playing.
Rich wrote three books for a major publisher, Dale Zdenek/ Belwin Mills/Columbia, providing him the opportunity to work with other great artists/authors like Tommy Tedesco, Joe Diorio, and Ted Greene. After teaching at GIT/Musicians Institute, in Hollywood, CA, for three years, he developed and published his own home study guitar school-type curriculum available on his website www.GuitarCollegeLibrary.com which has helped over ten thousand students improve their playing.
Rich has won honorable mentions and awards in songwriting and served as president of the Ventura County Producers and Songwriters Guild. Touring for three years with "Dick Clark's Good Old Rock and Roll Show," he had the opportunity to perform with Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Little Anthony, and many other great, old-time rock and rollers.
After moving his family to the Yosemite/Fresno area, he taught guitar and directed the jazz band at Fresno Pacific University for two years. Being a well-rounded player, Rich is comfortable playing a variety of styles, including jazz (his favorite), blues, rock, fusion, country, and solo fingerstyle. He performs at local venues in a number of different scenarios, as a solo guitarist, with his jazz trio or quartet or smooth jazz quintet. At home in his studio, he is continually producing new lessons for KZfaq and www.GuitarCollegeLibrary.com.

Perfect timing for me, Rich. I just got a new archtop. I fine tuned the octave harmonics; adjusted the truss, but no flat wounds yet. And as you said, heavier gauge strings require another truss adjust. I also took your advice on my other archtop and reversed the neck pickup ring so it points up closer to the strings. Warmed up the sound just like you said. Thank you. We starving musicians always appreciate the help of our fellows.

Just received my Stew Mac kit, with sanding pads and fret file. I have an inexpensive guitar with jagged fret edges. Gonna get to work. Thanks, Rich!

I'm terrible at maintenance and setups myself, but I find these videos enjoyable and somehow soothing, just like I'm fascinated by luthiers but probably have minimal talent in that field. The guitar looks great and sounds great at the end, in Rich's hands.

A little tip when dealing with corrosion on metal threads. A couple drops of ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) & acetone (nail polish remover) in a 50/50 mix works better than any penetrating oil I've tried. In the case of the tail piece, I'd remove it completely from the guitar and submerge the offending bit in the solution. Leave it for an hour and when you come back, slowly work the metal locking nut back and forth until you can get the mixture on all of the threads. The mixture won't harm the metal finish. I've freed up stiff tuners too with the mixture.

Not bad tone. I personally don't care for the extended neck joint, but I rarely play above the 11th fret anymore. Nice video.

Archtops sound great, in the den. Can't put enough gain on them to cut through the mix in an electric country / rock stage band. Can't hear my own instrument without going into uncontrollable feedback. Any suggestions 🤔

I like your video and imagine that I would disassemble the guitar more in the cleaning process, removing knobs to flush out pots and tightening up tuner face nuts

Fret leveling is more often a stopgap for what should be a re-fret job. Spend the money now rather than later and your fingers and ears will thank you.

In the hands of a great player, like Rich, even a very cheap instrument can sound good. In the hands of a hack even a high end instrument will sound like garbage.
