This week I've massively upgraded my indie virtual production studio to have a Vicon Optical Motion Capture system. You can think of this as a VERY high end Steam VR system for tracking humans, props, and cameras.
PRICING: this "INDIE" Vicon system is ball park $50K US. There are smaller configurations as well.
My first goal is to get the best LIVE MetaHuman performance capture I can in Unreal Engine. After that I'd like to test out their camera tracking pipeline for green screen virtual production in Unreal Engine.
Big thanks to Vicon Support Team as I stumble through learning how to make this all work together in Unreal Engine!

1. ALL of this MOCAP footage was recorded live from Unreal Engine, no post processing, clean up, or motion editing. If I spend a few hours cleaning up, it will be absolutely perfect. 2. PRICING: for THIS "Indie" Vicon system is ball park $50K US. There are smaller configurations available as well.

I like how your small room is twice the size of my apartment, lol! Are we talking 6-figure enterprise budget for this 10-camera system, or would it be under $30K for this? Just to get an idea of how jealous I should be, lol!

I was a VFX technician at Fox working on Avatar 2 and 3, among many other films. That set up you have there is pretty amazing for how small and simple it is, the movements are impressively clear and smooth. Mind you, the most recent motion capture stage we built for another film, required 300 cameras. ☹️ Took several months just to wire the stage with ethernet cables. I have a couple scenes I need to shoot motion capture if you’re interested in taking a peek. Let me know! Any interest in shooting a 60 second trailer? :)

Hey! We probably know some common MOCAP tech friends like the Derry's. Wiring 300 cameras sounds like massive project. I'm spending pretty much every day learning the system and making demos so I can create animations for my game Cine Tracer. Maybe after that is settled I would have to time for other projects and I would actually know what I was doing lol.

Good luck my dude! Based on how well it can track those smaller finger trackers. You can totally do 10 finger set ups. I am fighting for my studio to use it but you know how it is. Get some form of video into your calibration set up. 1.6 added SDI tracking features if you marker up a camera. SUPER HELPFUL to get an accurate skeleton since you can just refer to it. The other advice I have about it is Vicon will twist the hands up after the initial calibration. Get into shogun post and straighten out the wrist in your T Pose Frames, then fix the fingers. Remember the markers are "hovering" over your fingers so the real bone is much lower than where it is normally constrained to. Feel free to reach out.
@CinematographyDatabase
@CinematographyDatabase 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I just bought some gloves and I'm going glue the 9mm markers onto them. I'll show it in the next vlog but I have the rubber band finger mounts and they cut off circulation and it's almost impossible for one person to do the 10 finger tracking setup without help. I do a have a few Blackmagic SDI cards laying around and a Ursa G2 I could use as a witness/view camera for doing the built in overlays in the future. I'm still just taking it one step at a time.

@CinematographyDatabase
@CinematographyDatabase 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah optical suits definitely have a range of sizes as they are purely fabric, no electronics. You can also just use Velcro wraps around your arms and body. It’s just Velcro at the end of the day, so you could make your own MOCAP suit from anything really. On the inertial MOCAP side, Perception Neuron 3 and Xsens Awinda both have strap systems, so they just wrap around your arms and body.
@seanlake7404
@seanlake7404 2 жыл бұрын
@@CinematographyDatabase Exactly. I've used the PN suits for that exact reason. It's just frustrating if a larger user wanted to use those suits. I mean, like you said, though, one could really just adapt the "hardware" end of the suits, I guess, to be custom straps only. I've seen it done with some newer live VR Immersive experience setups have done something very similar and devised durable solutions without a suit. Good idea, may have to do that so that I can use the other tech.

Thanks for sharing! I've performed on a vicon stage before and am just starting with a rokoko setup so I can confirm that difference in fidelity is pretty amazing to use the Vicon. But also curious like other commenters on the price tag of this system for the 10 camera setup. Were the 10 cameras the minimum? Or recommended amount by Vicon? Or it just depends on the size of the volume you measured out for your space before you purchased that dictated 10 cameras? Thanks!
@CinematographyDatabase
@CinematographyDatabase 2 жыл бұрын
The workflow is to spec your performance space and your goals, like how many performers, height (think stairs, etc.), props, and then they recommend the setup while working with your general price range. It's not an off the shelf product. I do hope they are able to release a general pricing range so people have an idea. However, I'm not at cleared to give pricing myself at the moment.

With something this expensive (I assume it's not gonna be anywhere near the cost of consumer VR tracking if it's supposed to be so much better); you would expect it would have some sort of automatic calibration, adjusting of zoom, focus etc...
@CinematographyDatabase
@CinematographyDatabase 2 жыл бұрын
I asked them about that and having FIZ motors would dramatically increase the size and cost of each camera. Which is true with the encoded lenses I’ve used for Broadcast and cinema. Once you set the FIZ, you also lock them down, so you wouldn’t get a lot of use with them. They would probably require more power too. It would make setup easier though of course.

Oh cool, the tracking is so smooth! I wonder if I can afford it? *Reads the description.* HOW MUCH????!!!! Seriously though, this is very cool. But definitely not indie at this price. Have you tried motion capture with SteamVR trackers? Sure it's not a _nanometer_ level of precision, but you can easily get 4 base stations or more, with 13 trackers, for much less than 50k$... You'd get a very decent result.
@CinematographyDatabase
@CinematographyDatabase 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I’ve written full body IK Control Rigs for 4-11 point SteamVR Vive Trackers and or Tundras. The tracking hardware for Vive is quite good. It’s the body solve and retarget that is the bigger/noticeable difference from Vicon.

Quick question: I am spending weeks in trying to retarget the vicon rig to the ue4 mannequin rig. I got some decent process using a rig translation within Maya with the Human IK. Ufortunately there are still some weird rotations going on and the fingers and feet do not align properly. The standard retargeting process where I add the UE4 mannequin to Vicon Post for retargeting doesnt work since the legs and the arms start rotating like crazy after aligning the rig and setting the constraints. So right now I really dont know where else to put in effort. does someone have any ideas? I'm using Vicon for my Bachelors project.

@CinematographyDatabase
@CinematographyDatabase 2 жыл бұрын
Xsens is inertial (blind) MOCAP and the data from it is quite good AFTER HD Processing, which is a post processing "filter/algorithm" you run after you record it. The data live however isn't any where near the quality of Vicon. Second, Xsens has no native retargeting tools, so you are on your own to retarget to you skeleton. Vicon has an entire live retargeting and post retargeting workflow. That is the second reason specifically that the MetaHuman in the demo looks so good. He is live retargeted in a very elegant and accurate way.

@@GeorgesEmmanuelArnaud you could buy multiple Xsens Link systems for the price of one Vicon easily. They are completely different worlds. Optical starts to scale more economically when you want to capture 2-6 actors at once however, but that isn't an indie operation that is a big studio usually.

Did you consider an OptiTrack system? What made you choose Vicon? Also, you should try recording an actor with a VR headset on so they can visualize their environment live in UE. Maybe even two actors with the previously recorded actor layered in, so the 2nd actor can see the 1st performance and act as if it were live. Might be useful for mocap stages conforming to covid guidelines. Or just lonely one man teams... XD

I was looking at Optitrak but the opportunity to work with Vicon happened first. Vicon is the leader in optical MOCAP so I was really interested to learn how the system would work with MetaHumans

Vicon also has a full body capture for VR solution too, supports up to 8 users in one space - so they can not only visualise their environment live; but see other people being captured in real-time
