"Tool" recommendation: Hemostats. I liberated some from my wife who's in the medical field. You can get them at various sizes. Hooked or straight noses. They serve the dual purpose of getting into tight spaces where a needle nose can't and also lock onto an object without having to keep pinching the handles. An absolute must for "rocket surgery".

Stuff like this is what separates real mechanics from those who only do simple things and pretend they know what they're doing. This is almost on the level of rebuilding the upper part of the engine. And you just know what each and every little part is and how everything works. That said, I saw a video earlier today on Car Wizard's channel, and this engine made his list of "engines to avoid at all costs" because of this exact issue. It's a serious design flaw, and every single one of these needs this done at some point. Edit: You were close, it's called laparoscopy.

They can take a beating and will still start up every time. I have the 4.6 2v in my explorer and it has been a wonderful experience for me (less the crappy transmission it’s mated to). It's amazing seeing how many parts and how intricate the whole thing is and how easily any component failing can cause a catastrophic failure. Really helps me understand why electric motors are such an improvement in simplicity and reliability
@StormsparkPegasus
@StormsparkPegasus 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, electric motors only have 1 moving part. The stator just sits there. The rotor spins in response to a rotating magnetic field produced by the stator. Mine does have a pump, for lubrication of the gears that connect the motor to the wheels, and for cooling purposes too. But yeah there are very few moving parts in an electric engine in comparison.
@LeewardStudios

Yes but when you run out of electricity you can’t take a bucket to get more
@scipio7
@scipio7 2 жыл бұрын
I was thinking this same thing a few days ago. A hundred years ago when batteries were awful and electric motors had tolerance and bearing problems, it made sense to trade that off against a flathead gas motor that was just a crank, eight pistons and rods, a cam, sixteen simple sidevalves, a cooling circuit, a carburetor, a dizzy, and an oil pump. But then the complexity grew and grew until the timing assembly alone that Ray is working on is more complex than my imaginary flathead 8 cylinder. I worry about the future of mechanics like Ray a lot too, well, more younger guys like Peter. There will be a need for body shops, tires, brakes, and suspension work with electric cars, but heavy engine and transmission work will shrink as the proportion of piston engines on the road decreases. But smart people who work hard tend to make it, so Ray will. Change happens.
@bertblue9683

Hi Ray, I loved this last video installing the valve followers and my heart was in my mouth when the valve colletts fell away and the terrifying thought of the valve dropping into the cylinder was a real danger. Do you think that it might have been an option to carefully rotate the crankshaft to bring the piston to about an inch btdc, so if the valve did drop, at least the piston would prevent the valve from disappearing into the gloom? By the way I love your videos. Keep up the great work. Danny from England.

This repair shows a sign of the times. A year ago, a vehicle that needed this kind of surgery was usually off to the junkyard because it really wasn’t worth the financial investment of fixing. The keepers won't leave you. 2. Drop the oil pan to do the oil pump! It takes all of the 5 mins and will save you a bunch of time. I looked at part 1 again and the L phaser is on the right as viewed from the front, mostly. I say mostly because as far as I can tell, before Ray removed the timing chain cover, the R phaser was on the right! Am I going mad?

You are correct, also the sides are usually dictated by the driver direction not the head on direction something looks strange here.

Next time you might tie some thread to the bolt, that way if you drop it you may be able to retrieve it and the tread is so fine it can stay. I use to do that with gaskets to hold them in place during installation.

I saw a video on Car Wizard's channel earlier today that listed this engine as engines to avoid at all costs, because of this very issue. It's a serious design flaw.

Just a small tip on those oil pick up bolts, you will find getting a good magnet held, (taped) against the block will hold them up for you while you have to fiddle them back into the threads. Love the channel please keep them coming.

Lots of comments, not sure if someone else said this already but when I did this job before Christmas, the cheap aftermarket tool suggested pressing down on the top of the valve as you are compressing it, made sure that the keeper didn’t come out. Saved me a lot of stress.

Ray you are very good at your job! The owner of that vehicle is very lucky that you are doing it! You are so careful and do everything to ensure that this detailed job is done correctly. I wish I lived near your shop, because I would love to have you work on my vehicles! Awesome job! It is fun to watch you fix all the things wrong with all your customers vehicles and fix what is wrong. You have a gift for sure! I can not work on my own vehicles because I was born with Cerebral Palsy and I am wheelchair bound, and I have not been able to find a good mechanic, since I moved to Waco Texas in 2009, so I just want you to know that I would love to find someone like you that is so good and also takes their time to make sure that the job is done right 👍.

Back in the days of the 80's, there was only one chain and the engines were not that complicated! Plus you would use a blue light to time the chain! What you did was stressful and I probably would have ran out screaming!! What a nightmare!

Had this done a couple years ago on my F150………..NOW…..there are other KZfaqrs that say this is a waste of time and money, and should just replace the engine instead. But then other KZfaqrs that say doing this with the high volume oil pump and OE Ford parts will last another 130,000 or so miles. I went this route, and so far so good. But my truck gets driven 100 miles a week and have had no probs yet…..loving the videos Ray….and remember, have a great day from Dade City,Fl…

Reminds me of the time dad was showing me how to load exposed black and white film into the developing drum In the dark room. I can’t see! I shouted, then close your eyes my dad advised, think it through, you will succeed. That was 70 years ago the advice still stands good. Ps excellent work.

Ole Geezer Gearhead here again. MAN, that scared the Schnizzle out of me ! I own a '02' Ford e250, 3/4 ton van. with an untouched 5.4, TWO VALVE(thank Goodness). Which has 337,000 miles on the clock. I started rebuilding engines way back when 'plastigauge' was a new item, and STP was a new miracle oil additive, we thought! I have to hand it to you. when that valve keeper fell out, I held my breath. Ray, you are one of the most determined mechanics that I've ever watched work on modern stuff. My hat is off to you sir. Saving the day with that keeper rescue. Sorry for the long post. Please forgive an 80 yr old gear head.

couple of 5.4 quick tips, when using the valve compressor always press downward on the valve side of the rocker as you compress the spring. I evenly loosen the cams and slide out all of the followers at once. reinstallation is also made with cam raised and take my time retightening the cam. saves hours over using the spring compressor

I have an E350 van that had the same engine with 117k miles that was having the same issues. I got it cheap because the previous owner did not want to pay the $$$$ to have this service done. I yanked the crappy 5.4 out (it got sold on Craigslist along with the original tranny) and dropped in a Cummins 24 valve with an Allison 6-speed transmission. Then I converted the van to 4WD with a kit from U-Joint Offroad. Been a great van ever since.
