Not For Broadcast but feel free to share and/or embed!- On the afternoon of Saturday, July 16th, 1988 a line of severe thunderstorms blasted through the New York City Metro bringing with them high winds, torrential rains, and cloud to ground lightning. I was only 15 years old at the time I shot this, so like all my other storm videos from the 1980s, this one was shot right from my front porch. The video quality isn't up to today's standards of course, but at the time it was considered pretty damn good! Back then I was shooting on a Sony 8mm camcorder (CCD-V8). I'm hoping to get more of my vintage storm videos from the 1980s up on my channel over the coming weeks and months. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy the video!

I never videoed them when I was that young, but I would watch them all the time. Actually got into storms when I was in elementary school.

Right now I am only capable of posting my old 8mm videos since I have a Digital 8 camcorder here that enables me to capture the footage via firewire right to my computer. For my old VHS-C tapes, I will need a video converter for which I don't have just yet. Amazon sells one, search for "diamond video capture device". It's about 40 bucks and will get the job done. Now that is a thunderstorm. Las Vegas usually does get bad storms kinda like everywhere else. But doesn't get tornadoes ever, like it hailed bad in Las Vegas on Thursday morning. I vidded it to! Yes, it does hail everywhere. There are also severe thunderstorms that happen everywhere too.

I remember this one time when my family was coming home from vacationing in Florida. Somewhere in south Alabama we drove through the worst damn storm I've ever been in. for minutes at a time it would be nothing but non stop lightning and it looked like it was right over the car instead of up in the air. There wasnt a car on the freeway that wasnt pulled over. Even my dad pulled over and back then he was the most fearless person I'd ever seen. I will never forget that 20-30 minutes of terror

Once again. I know exactly where this is. You filmed this right on the corner of 64th Rd. and Fitchett Street and I can clearly see the back of the apartment building I used to live at at around the 0:22 frame. Great video overall, especially the C2G lightnings, downpour footage and the weather radio chatters in the background.

Yep, only 15 when I shot this, about two months shy of my 16th birthday. Thanks for the comments! And yes, I do have more storm footage from the 80s, just have to get around to capturing and posting it. Will do more over the coming weeks!

Actually, I shot this 720 X 480 on 8mm but captured the footage this evening on a 1080 HD timeline in my editor. This way I was able to format it to fit the youtube player and preserve as much of the quality as I could. Thanks for watching!

Amazing footage ! That reminds me, when I started to photograph lightning strikes, with a 2 pound heavy miniature camera ... in 1979 .... Unfortunately, the photos have been lost over the years :(

Hi James! Yes, I'm finally getting around to posting some of my older videos from the 80s! I'm hoping to get more up over the coming weeks. There were some big storms around the NYC area both on the 16th and again on the 19th. Hopefully we have another July like that again this year for the both of us!

That's the problem with our weather. It's either freezing cold or on the rare occasions when it's warm, really horrible, humid and sticky. But as you say that's when thunderstorms are more likely to crop up, so yeah. Fingers crossed our mini heatwave (by UK standards) will go out with a bang!

Just saw this post James! Thanks for watching and yep, you can transfer your old VHS tapes too by picking up a video capture card. I purchased one off of Amazon for $40. It's called "Diamond video capture card" and you just plug in the RCA video and audio outputs on one end of it, and the other end is USB which you plug right into your computer. It comes with a CD with basic software called EZ Capture and once you install that and the drivers you're set to go. I capture in AVI, the best quality

Like many people, I'm amazed by the great quality for that old time :D Some outstanding lightning captures and incredible audio too, Scott! Haha, you were only 15 then? :D Excellent filming skills you had yet back then :) It's so awesome to see one of your first lightningfootage!! Do you have more lightningfootage from the 80's? I love it! ^^ And it's either nice to compare myself in that situation, because I'm just a year older currently :)

It seems like it lasted from afternoon through late night. Did storms redevelop? Also, were you guys not expecting that last lightning bolt? Did you think the worst was over?

Great video Scott - I am from the UK but was in NYC that weekend (I was 18 at the time). On this afternoon I was in Westport, CT where it was hot and sunny with no storms. Three days later there was an epic storm at around 8pm causing a two hour delay to my flight at JFK. It was the blackest sky I have ever seen! I don't suppose you filmed that one by any chance?

Unfortunately I don't have any shots from a few days later on the evening you were flying out of JFK. I will check through my archives though just to make sure as I'm now curious.

Thanks for the reply Scott! Born April 1970 so this was a few months after my 18th. I remember this particular Saturday for the heat and humidity which was far more intense than anything we experience here. In the evening I remember seeing distant lightning from what must have been the storm you were filming. I have checked the records on wunderground.com and the Tuesday storm started at 8.14pm at JFK. Our flight back to London was due to depart at 8pm but didn't go until 10pm which must have been a brief gap in the weather. The records show that the storms continued until 2am so six full hours. Odd that we are now discussing an event that took place almost 30 years ago and remember it so clearly 😀

I live in eastern Canada i remember the very humid and of summer of 1988 so bad that my dad had to put ice block in the pool because the water was too warm

I actually started audio taping them first haha, then I saved my nickles and dimes and finally went in 50/50 with my dad for the video camera in June 1987!

LOL I shot this on my first video camera, which was a Sony CCD-V8AF. Made in 1985! It was an 8mm camcorder and pretty state of the art for it's day!

I cant remember this one too young way way too young not eve born yet, but why don't cha have 8/16/10 tstorms up unless u were in florida, I you remember, I had a two good ones in 4 hours evening of terrible thunder chasher great lighting the whole hospital shook my roommate was evil and wouldn't let me watch as her bed was at the window side, I was in the maternity ward my child was one dya old how can I forget it even keit grillman and eduarrdo burroa remembers it! so in themernity room I walked past the nursey and watch it in the hallway in pain so this tors kinda reminds me of that one august 16 2010 where were u have any missing video dying to see u upload ita dn june 30 1998 and sep 2 1998 and july 18 1997
