Surfer, Matthew Richell drowns after accident at Tamarama beach.

At around 2.00pm numerous rescue services responded to reports of a surfer in distress near Tamarama beach.
The surfer, now indentified as Matthew Richell, CEO of Hachette Australia, struggled after being swept up against rocks.
Another surfer had come to his aid, but it appeared Mr Richell was unconscious upon their arrival.
Bondi lifeguards responded on their jet skis to the unpatrolled beach.
CPR was commenced on the patient until paramedics arrived minutes later.
Specialist intensive care and helicopter crews also assisted during the resuscitation, with additional support from local community "Hatzolah" first responders.
After some 40 minutes, Mr Richell was declared deceased on scene.
Ambulance Inspector Norm Spalding said that effective CPR was underway on their arrival.
Bystanders and surfers did everything they could do to save the man.
Police have commenced investigations and will prepare a report for the coroner.
Mr Richell leaves behind a wife and two children.

Can you believe people are blaming lifeguards for not watching that beach? They aren't stationed at that beach, so it isn't their fault. If people want lifeguards to save them right away, they should be at a patrolled beach rather than an unpatrolled one.

Unfortunately people have to always point fingers and place blame somewhere I guess it's just ignorance. I look at it like these surfers know the risks that they're taking and they do it because they love surfing. It may not be their job but a becomes a police officer 9 outta 10 times because that's what the person wants to do right? Well there's always a risk involved there. Or the military or any other dangerous job or sport. So your right it's not the lifeguards fault. Its not anyone's fault. Its was obviously his time to go.

@@graceelford9417 There are Lifeguards at that beach, maybe not that section but they are there, since they did CPR however I agree with the original post that it isn't lifeguards fault. They save thousands every year, but they cant save everyone. People have to be smarter.

There's a sign that says "no lifeguard service here today", so i guess they knew the risk of surfing or swimming there. RIP to the surfer

Matt did not surf that day with the knowledge that he was at risk of dying. He had two young children and the inquest specifically reported that he was a “sensible and careful person who surfed responsibly and was well aware of his limitations”. It was an incredibly unforeseen, freak incident where a swell collected him and swept him directly into the outcrop.

God to see the Hatzolah folks responding as well. Nice work by all. Great effort. Also shout to Sydney HEMS. Best you can do. I am quite positive every possible resource was used. Can't win them all. Rest in peace and prayers to the family.

Well said. I suspect that he may have had injuries, perhaps even a head injury from crashing against the rocks; they can and will determine that. Certainly best efforts were made to save him but sometimes it's just too late. Condolences to all involved. It is difficult for lifeguards and ER personnel also, when efforts to resuscitate a patient fail. Having worked in the ER for years, I can attest that you always wonder if there was anything more you could have done, it's a feeling all responders feel when they lose a patient for any reason. Only time heals, but you never forget that case.

The many people in the United States and Canada who ask where your skills at photographing storms each year are learned, could well see your techniques in this sensitively filmed news story. Terribly sad, but beautifully filmed.

Doesn't matter what country you come from or live in, I have no idea why "THE MEDIA" feels the needs to place on the Television the entire death experience. Just showing this young man trying to be revived was plenty, seeing the stretcher with the young mans body wrapped in blankets, sort of ruined the story for me, much less must has killed the parents when they saw this on the news. Just the other day a lady we think committed suicide by swimming over "Niagra Falls" in New York State, and of course there was someone that filmed it, and the news stations could wait to get it aired ASAP. Do we as a society really need news reporters,news stations showing dead bodies, people buring and screaming for life? What happened too the nice news? At least here in America it is all gone? I wonder what the News is like in Australia and Canada? Just as morbid? Maybe I am wrong, but I did not need to see the young man like that,knowing that 15 in before he was riding,but alive. I was a nurse for 32 yrs, and now at 60,have seen my share of death, and it is a very sad yet PRIVATE time,not the need to be flashed on live TV for an entire city to see.

No offense, but the guy answering the questions isn't too helpful or honest. He was asked how long the guy was in the water and he just dodges the questions. I know you can't say much because you want to keep it closed so the true story can be told but you can least say you don't know yet but will find oit

I don't think he dodged it, but you have some people that no matter what they have to find fault with something to make themselves feel better.

He wasn't dodging, he couldn't give an exact number of minuites, so he explained that the whole event was witnessed from beginning to end, and that as soon as people saw he was in trouble and then became unconscious, they started out to rescue him, implying that he wasn't unconscious in the water for very long. I have a feeling you're one of those people that thinks they're really smart, but has trouble reading the most simple of social situations.
