Thanks for this! Just wanted to suggest, rather than using all the rulers to find you bias grainline, you can just draw a little box (1”) around your straight grain line than draw through the corners to find your bias. So easy, and no lining up rulers :)

This is the first video by you that I've seen and I already subscribed - I'm honestly blown away by your style. I got into sewing a few weeks ago (as I needed to make some face masks, yay 2020) and it quickly became a hobby. BUT. As a total beginner I often feel clueless as to what to do and why. I've kept watching all these youtube tutorials making beautiful dresses, skirts and whatnot, but the other creators usually skimp on instructions, or give instructions so convoluted that I feel lost after a minute. So I end up wistfully watching the finished product and feeling like I could never do that... But your instructions? Detailed, logical, straight to the point... simply perfect. You really have a gift for educating others. THANK YOU, now I know what my go-to sewing channel is going to be :) Not only do I feel like I can do this, I flat out look forward to making this dress. It's super empowering :)

This was so great! I love your energy and you are a really good teacher! I am just wondering why we divide by 4 for the measurements. I am new to sewing and have a brain that needs to know why so I can remember things! lol

Hi! Great question. Since we begin drafting half on 4 parts of the pattern (2 half fronts and 2 half backs). We need to find the waist measurement for just that one half so we divide by 4. Hope this helps! :)

You are a great instructor!! I agree with the last commenter, such a clear tutorial. Do you always have to cut a slip dress on the bias? I’m asking because I have a silk fabric that would not be long enough if cut on the bias.
@SewAddicts
@SewAddicts Жыл бұрын
A bias cut allows the fabric to drape better on the body (less seam lines). You are still able to cut on grain depending on how wide your fabric is.

Hi, great tutorial. Just wondering weather you divide the measurement by 4 and THEN add an inch. Or do you add an Inch and then divide by 4. It gives different results depending which way you do it

id say add the inch after but if you want your dress to fit pretty snuggly around your waist you can also do it the other way round

You can get lots of bveautiful poly satin and silk satin faberics from East Indian and Pakistani stores where they also sell saris --not expensive, either. Thanks for clarifying about the strips being cut on the streaight of grain. I understood, when you sew bias seams that you are supposed to stretch them as you sew and even hand baste them first, But this seams to work. Also, when you hem the slit, what do you do at the to of the slit? Do you split the side seam or what to make it smooth at the top of the slit? Also, I think you are a genius and I enjoyed watching you draft your pattern.
@SewAddicts
@SewAddicts 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! @14:22 shows you how i finished the slit. It is cut from the side seam so I just finished up the edges and made a stitch along the edges all the way to the top. Thanks for watching! x

Hi , can we fold the material in 2 in bias and put the front pattern paper on the fold line ….or is it important to cut it flat
@SewAddicts
@SewAddicts Жыл бұрын
It is important to cut flat on bias as the silk fabric can shift if folded.

Thank you for sharing! Question... When creating the back pattern do you also take the bust line down by one inch (like you did on the front so theres more room under the arms) so the underarms meet? I found my back was an inch higher then the front and didn't match up.

Yes! You reduce the back as well. :)

It gives the fabric a much better drape and the stretch of the bias makes it very comfortable to wear
@momzilla9491
@momzilla9491 4 жыл бұрын
Amara, I just wanted to add a little information about fabric cut on the bias as a follow up to your question "Why do you cut it on a bias?" in response to making this beautiful Slip Dress. Lots of skirts etc are cut on the bias because they give more stretch and drape, but if you are sewing a heavy fabric like a woven wool, you should do a little research first. The weight of these heavier fabrics will distort if you don't treat them first, so the neckline, armhole, and hem begin to droop when you wear them, and sadly, there goes your expensive fabric and all your time! It's gravity stretching these fabrics... Heavy fabrics need to be hung up and allowed to stretch before cutting your pattern. I would hang the fabric over the shower pole on a diagonal, then repress before cutting. Pressing and Ironing are not the same thing. Happy Valentines Day!

More room and movement within the fabric. Also giving the flare look a natural drape as opposed to cutting an A-line pattern.
