FINALLY!!! THANK-YOU!!! at last, a video that actually addresses the serious problem straight to the point and not second guessing about lint build up and dust or thread weight being mismatched, if you really worked out this problem for yourself, I totally applaud you, the amount of time wasting video's telling you to maybe re-thread the bobbin!, maybe oil the machine!, maybe wear "yellow" socks when sewing, maybe try sitting on mint leaves with a clothes pin on your nose, etc etc, thank you, ..if KZfaq only had straight to the point video's like this, then our lives would be better and not wasted hitting soo many dead ends, this video has just saved me loads of time! 😂👍 Sista!! You helped me fix my (used to be my mum's)"Brother"

Very good information here...the manual never tells how to fix a problem, and, like any other machine, there is no reason why we can't fix a sewing machine. I am an IT person, I fix computers. When my sewing machine did not catch the bobbin thread, I try every way to figure out why and helplessly ended up empty hands. Thanks to your video, though you did not use proper terminology, and sometimes the filming was blurry, but the information given here was clear and valuable enough to give you a thumb up; and you are a genius to figure out this by yourself. BTW, my machine has an automatic needle threader, and it has two adjustment screws on the shank. The upper one is for the threader adjustment, the lower one is for this purpose.

@CleverFix

@@ElizabethHopkinson We had this problem, found this video, but it was not the solution. The timing can be thrown off by another allen screw that is under the machine on the right side. I am thinking I should make a video to show it. If the timing is off, one of the two allens have loosened and let the shaft slip. Compensating with this screw if the other is loose will eventually lead to the problem happening again.

You are a gem! I love finding smart people on KZfaq. I admire your spirit to just keep trying until you figured it out, and thank you so much for sharing your hard earned knowledge. I have an older Necchi 3537 - entirely different machine but the bobbin case and shuttle assembly looks exactly the same. I've just had it all taken apart to clean and oil it (shoutout to "Vintage Sewing Machine Garage" for instructions on that), but when I put it back together the lower thread wasn't catching. Now I know how to fix it. Thanks. edit: btw the tool is called an allen wrench.

ALRIGHT!! I was able to fix my bobbing timing by viewing your video. I even had the same problem with it skipping a stitch. It saved me $110, I called the local sewing shop and that is what the lady quoted. That price also motivated me to try and fix it on my own. Only took a couple of minutes once I realized how to do it. Don't see how the sewing repair person could feel comfortable charging such an outrageous fee for something that easy.

Thank you! Something slipped and my hook timing ended up wrong and I thought I'd fixed it but it still wasn't picking up the bobbin. This video helped me understand it better and I solved it. Rather than adjust the needle I actually loosened the bobbin housing and lined it up that way - I've got a Toyota 5500 and this was easier as I can't easily reach the needle screw.

That screw thing with the L wrench is called an Allen Head "set" screw. It sets the needle positioning rod to the proper adjustment length. The L wrenches are called Allen Wrenches, not to be confused with the star shaped "torx" style screw head. Any good home hardware store will sell a kit with a driver handle and multiple size bits of the various types. Some even have a flexible extension so that you can get to screws in weird angles. Magnetic bits are nice too. I've found the kit useful for my sailrite machine

Your video helped me understand my sewing machine better! A few years ago I thought there was something wrong or faulty about my machine and I stopped using it, until now... Now I see what the problem is and fixed it! For those who didn't get it, try playing with the hook and the needle and see how the whole mechanism work. Leave the top thread intact but remove the bobbin. Basically, you want the hook to catch top thread as the needle goes up, thus forming a loop. For me, changing the direction of the needle eye helped! Thanks again!

thank you so much for taking the time to demonstrate how to adjust the timing of the bobbin and needle to work in unison so the stitching is correct. My bobbin is so out of time that the needle can't pick it up. I did maintenance on my machine and took the bobbin casing out to remove old stuck piece of thread. It sewed correctly once but I'm sure whenI put the machine away the casing moved slightly causing the timing to be off. So with your much needed help and very succinct instruvtion along with the zoomed photo demo I am certain I can do the necessary minor adjustments to create the 'just right' synchronicity between needle and bobbin. I am 65 and can't afford to take my machine in so you have also saved me a significant amount of money!! With the various videos that so many kind people have posted I have been able to save hundreds of dollars by fixing my windows, oven, refrigerator, lawn tractor, toilet, small appliances and so many other things I don't recall all of them! Given the economic state of our country it is wise to fix everything we can without having to pay for repairs until such time wages are increased to provide the opportunity to create descretionary money for these things. I'm sure upper class Americans who are in control of the pharmaceutical and insurance companies don't even have the need for a sewing machine much less own one!! Thanks for helping middle class America survive while these adverese self centered politicians get their act together to put a stop to the top 10 percent having 80 percent of the wealth in our country and only get their hands slapped when found guilty of defrauding the bulk of Americaqn people!! Sorry to include the rant but hope it serves to underscore just how much you are helping others!

+spettro9 Also sometimes referred to as a bicycle wrench. Good stuff here. I think that the sizes are metric. a helpful tip is multi headed screw driver kits have them in various standard sizes... for cheap! be well.

Thank you!! I had both problems - skipping stitches and then full on not catching the bobbin thread and was very close to taking it in to be fixed. You're awesome!!

You just saved me a lot of trouble. Don't worry that you didn't know all the names of the parts. I don't either and I've been sewing for 50+ years. LOL Hmmm...maybe it's time I look them up. I wish you great success with your KZfaq channel. Please keep it going.

Thank You from far Poland Eastern Europe. I had the same problem the bobbin was blocked by dirt. When I cleaned it and readjusted it starded to saw correctly, but it still misses stiches on more complex settings. I have to work on it again.

This usually happens when you run over a zipper tooth or something to actually push the needle up into the machine...then you just drop the needle bar down so the hook will catch the thread. Good for your Girl !!

I can't wait to try this,I have a brother sewing/embroidery machine that was $2400 bucks. Worked AMAZING for the first 5 years and then its one problem after another I'm tired of "taking it in!" So i'm now having the bobbin issue. Even though yours is a simple brother I think they are made the same way. The side top comes off exactly the same so I can't wait to try this! Thanks for your VIDEO!!!!!!!!!

You are telling people to loosen and reposition/adjust the needle bar. DO NOT loosen and adjust the needle bar unless the needle bar is in the wrong position. There is a mark on the needle bar that is just below the needle-bar-carrier when the needle eye is approximately 1/8" below the hook point. "REAL" sewing machine timing usually involves a small adjustment to the gear behind the hook.

Thank you for the information sounds professional and trustworthy. I did follow the video as far as adjusting the bobbin thread and it resolved my problem. Which I think meant I didn't have a timing problem as it all works fine now.

...and no information on what else (much simpler things) may be the cause of skipped stitches. A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing. Never follow a machine repair video in which someone says they messed around until they found a ‘solution’. Good grief!!

+Aimie Neish watch more you tube videos. There are many basic sewing lessons here and on sewing websites. Don't give up! Once you get it you will love it. Nothing like it. Unless your a compulsive perfectionist. I have met a few of those, they never enjoy sewing.

+Aimie Neish The best way to learn is to keep trying, take old t-shirts or jeans cut them up into squares and practice. I have been sewing for 30 years and just today learned how to fix my sewing machine by watching this video. I do believe that sewing machines can hate you, I had one that was so bad that I couldn't get rid of it fast enough. Looking back I think the problem was me - it was the thread I was using, I was using cheap needles and I honestly didn't know my machine at all. I couldn't even clean it properly and they are right when they say change you needles, clean your machine at least once a month and use the correct oil. Did you know that when you thread your machine the pressure foot needs to be raised? Google/youtube a specific problem and you may find your answer.

Thanks for your video! This is the only one I could actually understand and relate to. My vintage Morse 4500 went out of time and I could visualize another trip to the sewing repair shop. You were so clear in your video it took me only about 10 minutes to get it back in working order. You really did a great job, thanks again!

You saved me time and money with this. My 1980s vintage Babylock Companion's shuttle race jammed, and when I managed to unjam it, the needle thread wasn't engaging with the bobbin thread at all. You clued me in to the timing, and I was able to fix it myself!

TY so much for making this video, you saved my life... I have 3 Kenmore machines 1 is obsolete and can't find parts for it, the other 2 both series 158's. I am doing some automotive upholstery and so I bought a 32 piece foot set for it because the only machine that had a piping foot was the 1st machine I mentioned. After attaching the foot adapter and foot then went to sew the needle thread wouldn't pick up the bobbin thread on either of the other 2 machines.. IDK how both of the machines got out of timing at the same time but with your help it took 10 minutes to get one of them firing on all cylinders now... I TY again... 😎
