You can check out all this in the Appendixes after RotK, Tolkien laid the timeline in painstaking detail. It's quite fun to see which events happened at the same time.

At the time, online communities were exclusively weirdos and outcasts; the idea that movie stars or other celebrities would be aware of anything online was completely crazy.
