2022年3月に放送し、大きな反響のあった「世界の鉄道スペシャル 絶景の旅」など、
世界遺産を走る鉄道は多くあります。その中から今回は、世界遺産になっている鉄道をご紹介します。スイスの「レーティシュ鉄道」と、ダージリン・ヒマラヤ鉄道（「インドの山岳鉄道群」）、そしてオーストリアの「ゼメリング鉄道」です。

スイスアルプスを走る「レーティシュ鉄道」
100年前、アルプスを越えたレーティシュ鉄道。麓の町から標高1775ｍのサンモリッツを結んだアルブラ線とベルニナ線が、世界遺産に登録されています。
今では、世界中から観光客が訪れる夏のスイス。緑の高原を走りぬけ、アルプスと氷河の絶景を満喫する鉄道の旅です。鉄道が、閉ざされていた辺境の集落を結びました。
けれどアルプスの自然は過酷なもの。冬には今も、鉄道マンの雪との戦いが続きます。
100年前に活躍した「モンスター」と呼ばれる除雪車が大切に保存されていました。

The Rhaetian Railway crossing the Swiss Alps. The Albula Line and Bernina Line, which connected the town at the foot of the mountain to the 1775m-high resort of St. Moritz, inscribed as World Heritage Sites a hundred years ago.
Today, Switzerland is one of the popular destinations for tourists from all over the world in the summer. The Railway journey takes you to the green highlands, allowing you to enjoy breathtaking views of the Alps and glaciers. The railway connected remote settlements that were once isolated.
However, the natural environment of the Alps can be harsh. Even today, railway workers continue to battle the snow in winter. The snowplows, known as "Monsters," which were used a hundred years ago, are carefully maintained.

ヒマラヤ山脈を走る山岳鉄道「インド山岳鉄道」
アジア最古の山岳鉄道であり、トイトレイン（おもちゃの汽車）と呼ばれる蒸気機関車が走っています。もともとはイギリスの植民地時代だった頃に、紅茶産業や避暑地としてイギリス人たちが行き交っていた場所への交通手段として作られたものです。その名の通り高い所で標高2000m近いルートを走る魅力的な鉄道です。

オーストリアのアルプスを走る「ゼメリング鉄道」
ヨーロッパ7か国にまたがる、アルプス山脈。ゼメリング鉄道は、この大山脈を初めて越えた鉄道。開通は1854年。橋とトンネルを駆使し、当時、世界で最も高いところを走る鉄道でした。まさに、山岳鉄道の草分けです。ハプスブルク帝国の首都ウィーンと、地中海を結んだ路線。世界で初めてアルプスの峠を越えた鉄道の魅力に迫ります。

The Alps, spanning seven countries in Europe, were crossed for the first time by the Semmering Railway. It opened in 1854 and was the highest railway in the world at that time, making use of bridges and tunnels. It was truly a pioneer of mountain railways, connecting the capital of the Habsburg Empire, Vienna, with the Mediterranean. It unveils the charm of being the world's first railway to cross the mountain passes of the Alps."
