Actually Guardians of the Galaxy introduced a bunch of characters all at once in one movie in not much over 2 hours, so it can be done. And NONE of those characters were known by the general public. 4 of the Justice League characters were well known to the public, the biggest 2 that weren’t were Aquaman and Cyborg, but it could be argued that the Teen Titans cartoon gave a good foundation for Cyborg.
@TheDelinear

I'm not sure it's exactly the same deal - the expectation for JL was not just to introduce sidekicks, but to introduce characters who could then go on to do standalone movies. Nobody was begging for a solo movie of any of the Guardians after their movie. Expecting such a big ensemble to introduce solo movie worthy characters was too much. WB put the cart before the horse because they wanted to rush their Infinity War moment instead of building to it.

While I agree that WB rushed into JL too quickly, you can't blame Snyder. I read an interview with Chris Terrio I think it was, and he said that WB railroaded Snyder into BvS and then the Justice League storyline after MoS when Snyder wanted to do build up movies/a sequel to MoS.

For sure. WB was just impatient and greedy because their contracts were expiring and all they cared about was their bonuses. Personally, if they would have had any integrity to give the filmmakers the time they needed, maybe they would have been a more desirable in future projects and possibly improved their position in the industry as an intinty that you could count on to deliver a solid product.

I was quite baffled watching The Snyder Cut, as I knew it was 4hrs, but I kept thinking what have they added? It's the 2hrs movie, is it playing at 0.5 speed? Obviously there are additional scenes, and scene extensions, but I thought the majority of changes were just alt dialog. I can't believe Snyder would wanted to have released this in theaters, surely he would have looked to hack an hour off it at least, as it drags out such a straight forward story.

I do think the Snyder cut of justice league was better, there was more heart to it some of the characters were flushed out a little more but let’s be real it was really the same story as the other movie except there was a couple characters more in the Snyder cut. That being said while I think Man of Steel he’s my favorite superman movie of all time and I do love the casting of all the characters in justice league, I really wish they would’ve just done it the right way. I know everyone saying that “oh that’s marvelous way that doesn’t mean it’s right!” When you have individual movies that at first don’t really connect together and you love those movies and then the lead from all of those movies show up in one movie together it makes it feel more epic it makes it feel more special. The DCEU was rushed for bonus reasons because they knew AT&T was going to be selling to discovery in a couple years. And they thought all you had to do was put these movies out and they would make $1 billion because that’s what Disney was doing with Marvel Studios and Lucas film. And while I think Zack Snyder is a good Director I think he does better with just a one character movie like man of steel. Once he starts trying to put a team in there I feel like most of his focus goes to the looking feel of the movie but not actual the story or the characters as much. I think Batman versus superman was a good movie 3/4 in but then the last quarter of that movie he just couldn’t help himself. That was too much for one movie. And it was stupid to kill superman in the second movie in your shared universe because it’s not like when Iron Man died were you had people crying in the theater because they had been with that version of Iron Man for nine or 10 movies or whatever. It meant something when Iron Man died. When Superman died no one cared because we knew he was coming back in justice league. I am a DC diehard fan, I don’t hate Marvel I think people that hate things like that are kind of crazy it’s OK not to be a fan but to have a hatred of it I think makes someone a psychopath because it’s just entertainment, and I actually believe DC has the better universe to do a shared cinematic universe but the fans kind of only have themselves to blame here. They did not support man of steel in theaters, and they made fun of Batman versus superman for a full year after it came out. You couldn’t go on social media in a DC group without people posting that stupid Martha meme 50 times a day. So they didn’t care about Zack Snyder’s first movie and then they made fun of the second one, fans need to understand that you kind of need to support this stuff when it’s happening because I thought the fans look really dumb, not all of us but all these people all the sudden only after Warner Bros. show Zack Snyder the door do they decide they really love him. So where was all this love and support when he needed you guys?

the beautiful thing about the way the mcu started their eu was that they teased it all. every movie became a trailer for a new movie to help build up the hype. apparently Warner Bros didn't realize they weren't even on that hype train from the start and instead put in some lame emails adendums into one of their lame ass movies and then thought they were on the same level. like everything they did from then on would be just as eagerly gobbled up.

it seems like a studio decision, to test a longer format movie as a streaming exclusive as a test more traditional shorter movie lengths in the age of binge watching and instant resume. The campaign just helped it be a safe choice to get profit even if the test didn't succeed. I think fans are deluded if they think such tactics give them a voice or that their harassment campaign made a difference.

Just started getting into this podcast/show. A bit sad to hear how you all approached Fisher's claims of racism. But such is the experience of people of color throughout the world. Brushing off his concerns so long as long as you can find some other reason for something happening. I'll just note that you didn't take the same approach in critiquing the allegations of the buffy cast.
@gk.dopeesq.6853
@gk.dopeesq.6853 Жыл бұрын
To be more nuanced, the disappointment stems from the process of "take it with a grain of salt" from the beginning, and then coming up with reasons throughout. If this were your process of evaluating claims throughout your podcast, then I'd get it. But at this point I've listened to about 20 episodes of the podcast (I've jumped around) and I've never heard this approach taken. Racism gets explained away so much with "well I know that guy and he's not racist" or "that guy wouldn't do that, have you seen his love for the community" or "it wasn't racism it was (insert other reason here)", etc. This isn't gonna make me stop listening, I love the content and think you all are pretty thoughtful generally - this discussion specifically seemed slightly problematic even though I don't think that was intentional (I note there are times at least some of the group more explicitly points out the racism - i.e. the investigation of racism including interviews with what is likely mostly white ppl).
@ItWasAShtShow
@ItWasAShtShow Жыл бұрын
Thank you for this thoughtful criticism and comment. It’s definitely not our intention to be flippant with racism, as we try to call it out when we see it (like our Jewel of the Nile episode). In this case, all the racism claims are coming from who I’d argue is a bad faith actor. I say take a grain of salt because he’s been very vocal about so many things, and bringing them all up to eleven, as if that set was a KKK sex trafficking party. Whedon’s abuse and sexism claims have been backed up by many others, but not the racism. Fisher is the only one saying it. Since recording this, Fisher has proven himself an unreliable source and an outright troll (see his latest shit throwing towards James Gunn). Again, we aren’t dismissing the racism, I’m questioning Fisher himself. Thanks again for a proper dialogue (it’s rare on here).

Just to be clear, the 4:3 ratio didn’t crop the sides out, it just opened up the mattes on the top and bottom of the footage. Areas that are meant to not be shown, but to have as a safe zone for repositioning the frame of a shot a little here and there. That being said, editing and releasing it in 4:3 was fucking *stupid* . 😂
@ItWasAShtShow
@ItWasAShtShow Жыл бұрын
Do you know that for sure? Because its entirely based on the tech being used. If they did do that, then he’d have to scale it down to fit. But I’m pretty sure side comparisons show that footage was being cropped. And he never attended to release it like that when filming, so how could he prepare for that? This is all breaking my brain…
@itsd0nk
@itsd0nk Жыл бұрын
@@ItWasAShtShow The comparisons I looked at had extra headroom and nothing (or very little) missing from the sides. It was likely a combination of the two since most cinema cameras both digital and film shoot with an actual ratio a bit taller than what they get cropped to. This is why some old school VHS tape copies of films were sometimes the "open matte" versions with funny shit that was never intended to be seen, including boom mics or costumed characters wearing sneakers, actors in socks, etc, rather than pan and scan. You see this a lot in bts footage where you can see the monitor with crop lines and safe areas overlaid over a larger frame that the camera sensor is capturing. Edit: yeah the ARRI cameras they allegedly used shoot at 2.11:1 fully open gate, so that's actually even wider than either of the two versions of the film, meaning both versions were technically cropped in from what the full sensor captured, so it would have varied from shot to shot just depending on where the directors/editors ended up putting their mattes in either cut. The whole situation with this movie is just fucking bonkers in the end. But this would explain why some shots were still just as wide but had more headroom in 4:3 while others were the opposite. It was shot in 6.5K and was cropped for every shot to begin with.
@ItWasAShtShow
@ItWasAShtShow Жыл бұрын

I know this is old and this was a minor point on this episode and all, but it really irk me when people make this argument. Warner bros didn't need to follow the marvel model and start with smaller individual movies for multiple characters. The MCU model isnt the only one that works, we have seen a different one work rather well and DC was the one that did it well first, which makes the JL movies failure hit even worse. I am talking about the model both Dc and Marvel often use in animation, and the 90s DCAU JL cartoon is just a master class. You don't need to have watched the superman or the batman shows before to jump at the world invasion 3 part pilot, get a good first impression of each character, see an interesting plot, see the league been formed... and it only lasts some 70 minutes, fits neatly in a standard movie with time to spare. Seriously, that they didn't just make the JL movie a sort of reimagining of that pilot but with some different characters, and milked the shit out of that in marketing. They had the recipe right there, proven and tested, all with a bonus moon sized free nostalgia bait. Sucks to suck I guess.

Zack Snyder seems to miss more than hit in my opinion. Even when his movies aren't messed with by other people. I think 300 and Dawn Of The Dead remake are considered his best films. I remember coming across the Dawn Of The Dead remake years ago on the scifi channel and I thought it was one of those corny scifi original movies. 300 didn't have any impact on me either way. I felt neutral about it. I guess I'm just not the demographic for his stuff. But more power to him for getting his vision for this movie out. I didn't watch either of them. But this podcast about it was interesting. Lol.

This friend moved away and I miss him so when I saw the Whedon Cut call back to that line I smiled thinking about how my friend and how Cavil might have enjoyed getting his own back. And that is my main reason for not liking the Snyder Cut cause it didn’t appreciate an in-joke I have with no-one cause he’s moved.

Snyder is a very niche director and his films are enjoyable to me, I respect that he’s got his own style. I thought ZSJL was a decent film with very cool world building. Wished it was the version we got in the cinemas. And it’s really totally fine for anyone to think the film is bad. But the Rae girl in this podcast totally ripping apart Zack Snyder at every turn and shitting on the guy as a human being is extremely distasteful. Even mocking his choice to use his daughters favourite song in the film is such a low act. Shit, the girls death is forever synonymous with the JL saga and would be so cathartic to the Snyder family to finish the film that they left during the absolute worst time a parent could have. I hope that Rae never experiences the hate she’s giving Zack and I truly deeply hope that nobody records and broadcasts themselves mocking and making fun of her after she suffers a death in her immediate family

It's not hate. It's criticism. Just because you lose someone doesn't mean you get a break. Whether creatively in Zack's case, or just generally. You like what you like and you dislike what you dislike. Just because of a loss in someone's art that you enjoy doesn't mean that they have to view something with rose-colored glasses. I'm sorry that you take her criticism too heart. But don't take that grief and aim it at someone who is simply criticizing a piece of art.

@@ItWasAShtShow Any time it descends into attacks on Snyder on a personal or professional level, childish mockery of his artistic choices, his aesthetic etc. There are too many examples to list them all, certainly any time a quote from Snyder was being read, the female host couldn't do so without adding her pithy little impression. Hyperbolic nonsense about the film being 80% slow motion, mocking him for using a Leonard Cohen song. It all reeks of bad faith critique and a lack of emotional maturity. And I'm relatively confident I'm correct because here you are challenging me. I'm glad I listened to the whole video before giving it a thumb's down, I gave the group every opportunity to make a compelling video. Sadly it didn't get there. In X-Men, Joss was behind this moment: "Do you know what happens to a toad when it's struck by lightning? The same thing that happens to everything else. [lightning strikes]" According to him, it was meant to be... "[lightning strikes] Huh...the same thing that happens to everything else." So the smallest thing can make or break a line. While Snyder encourages ad-libbing, Joss needs actors to say the words perfectly. Snyder adds people of color for the sake of progress; Joss is an actual storyteller. He shouldn't have tried to fix this mess of a movie. Then again, neither should've Snyder.

I had to stop the podcast at 30 minutes. The negative bias and hate the female host has towards Snyder is so evident. And not even in a move maker level but at a personal level. And that's not "an opinion" it's just toxic, childish behaviour. Hating someone on a personal level just because he makes movies you don't like, just pathetic. Also, she says Snyder has a huge ego multiple times. Jesus, these haters make up the craziest things in their heads just to justify their hate. Literally anyone who has worked with Snyder has said he is the most humble and easy-to-work-with director. Every actor, stuntman and crew worker has nothing but good things to say about the guy.
