19世紀の中頃、笠間焼の影響を受けて始まりました。初期の益子焼は、藩の援助を受けて日用品を焼いており、そうして作られたものは江戸の台所で使われていました。
Mashiko-yaki is said to have started in the middle of the 19th century, when a potter built a kiln in Mashiko after learning pottery in nearby Kasama, Ibaraki Prefecture. The Mashiko kiln began producing pottery necessary for daily life, such as pots and jars.

For anyone curious, that stuff that he was painting on from the pot that was in the boiling water was likely wax. Glaze (the paint used on ceramics) doesn't stick to wax, so by painting part of your pieces with wax you can then rub the glaze off very easily later.
