DISCLAIMER: surviving falchions have much stronger distal tapers than the one we made in this video. We were limited by starting with a machete blade which wasn't perfect but much closer to historical falchions than ones you can buy. Historical falchions are about the same weight as ours, if a little more top heavy, but start at around 5mm thick at the base and taper to around 1.5mm at the top, and then have a gradual bevel that makes it even thinner on the flat part of the blade making them very thin swords overall. I'll be making a follow-up video discussing all the differences between our falchion and the real museum ones.
@bashpr0mpt-rc5dd
@bashpr0mpt-rc5dd Жыл бұрын
So why not use a much thicker blade like the one you abandoned which started much thicker then hit it with the sander to give it a nice taper? Not to mention, rockwell testing the material to begin with, then differential case hardening and appropriate heat treating to make it a vastly superior product with minimal effort (albeit repetitive waiting around like all heat treats are).

Finally I see someone shows how to make a proper falchion after Alex Steele (and for the fraction of the cost ;). Very nice job! The ONLY drawback is that the handle should be much SHORTER. It's a bit shame, since if you really wanted to feel how historically accurate one-handed falchion handles, your hand should be tight between the crossguard and the pommel...

I mean it technically is a traditional sword, Just not a conventional one. Way The hell better steal than anything those poor bastards back in the day would have had tho. As far as breaking goes I've used that same machete for quite some work for a few years now, I'm not sure It can actually break, it bends sure but I think it's too thin to actually break under reasonable circumstances, I mean I've hit plenty of fences and iron bars whit mine and apart from chipping The damage has been relatively minimal.

I know that Shad is mostly focused on Middle Ages, but as a Pole, I can only hope that Shad someday will make an video about marvellous Polish sabre known as "szabla" in Poland ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Szabla ). But when we are talking about falchions and machetes maybe you should also compare them to dusacks ("tasak" in Polish, "tesák" in Czech) which is a form of a short sabre with similar functions to falchions, which appeared after phasing out the falchion.

The key differences I've always noticed between equivalent tools and weapons are in the balance and weight distribution. An axe made for felling trees can afford to be heavy and forward-balanced because it's purpose-made for cutting timber. It doesn't require the speed or maneuverability of an axe that's going to be used for offensive and defensive purposes in battle because it's specifically designed to function as a tool. A felling axe and a battle axe are essentially the same thing in form and function, it's just that they're engineered to be effective in very different circumstances.

i have a falchion and its blade is about 3 to 4mm thick .a copy of the Norwich castle falchion and its a beast to use one handed. its almost like wielding an axe its very unwieldy and front heavy a thinner blade one would be beyond epic. if someone made one that could be sold id be on it faster than a fly on the barby

A weak pommel attachment might actually be an advantage if you're fighting Skallagrim.

now I'm imagining a pommel that's a steel ball dispenser so you have several handy "pommelettes" to end thy opponent righteously 😂

I don't know much about falchions, rapiers and katana are more my style, but am quickly becoming a fan because of your discussions and sword-crafting. Beautiful work and it looks to handle wonderfully.

You know, I've had about 3 dozen machetes sitting at the back of my garage for 8 years now. I think I'm gonna assess them, gauge them up, and rehilt the good ones.
