Someone here might find this a little amusing. So I just found a job after being unemployed for a while, longer that I'd like to admit, but after many many many applications and interviews finally I have a good job lined up! woohoo! Initially they told me the start date was June 21st, what hilarious luck right? Don't get me wrong, I'm a grown up and if the cards I was dealt were to suddenly not have freetime as soon as the DLC comes out then so be it, but that is pretty funny right? But then yesterday I got a call and they tell me that there's something wrong with the new offices theyre setting up etc etc and I now get until July 1st! This is going to be like my first Elden Ring playthrough all over again - that came out in the middle of winter break during grad school so I played it day and night to finish it before Id have to be back to the library.. I'm gonna be just blasting through this DLC with no hints or lookups. I love that it sounds like itll probably be large enough that finishing it in that time will be a struggle again and I'm definitely looking forward to that haha

Miyazaki said SURFACE AREA of Limgrave. So it's likely much more content in the DLC

After 1300+ hrs in the game and memorizing the location of every single item, I can't imagine the idea of visiting new areas and locations.

Limgrave gave me roughly 50 hours of exploration and general fun. Hearing that the DLC will be that big is extraordinarily good news, can't understand why people are upset about it.

Ratatoskr, I found your channel way back during the initial wait for Elden Ring. I was in a similar situation back then, desperate to know more about the game but also desperate to avoid spoilers. When I found your channel, I not only found your content very interesting, but it was through you that I discovered channels like Ziostorm, Smoughtown and The Lore Hunter, who I also still watch to this day. I’ve never really expressed my gratitude but I just want to say, with all the excitement in the air, that I’m very thankful I found your channel.

All the old souls fans already knew this, it's the new fans that were constantly under selling the DLC for no reason but they just don't understand how goated fromsoftware are

Yeah Limgrave is both big, and also not very dense because it is the starting area. There's lots of space for you to basically just ride torrent around and find only a small group of enemies or a single big boss without much interruption because you're still figuring things out and they're going easy on you. Compare it to like say Altas Plateau and such which have tons of verticality and lots of little dungeons and other locations all packed into a fairly small area because by then the training wheels are long since removed.

"It's the size of Limgrave" could also be said of Lordran, and even less so, since Lordran is actually quite small horizontally but extends vertically. Who knows if that place with the blue flowers and centipede friends isn't underground, for example?

We also have the file size for the DLC on PS4. 16 gigabytes. This is 133,3% of the size of Sekiro, and about the same size as Tears of the Kingdom. And fromsoft are quite good at compression, so a **lot** can be packed inside that.

I spent 25h in Limgrave base game alone during my first PT and that doesnt include Siofra River. That alone would be worth $40 for me. Now we have an expansion with: -100+ new weapons -8 new weapon types -30+ new OSTs -10+ new main bosses (base game had 15) -tons of new enemies -multiple new legacy dungeons -more densly packed open field areas -a more dark and sinister art direction (even better than main game from what Ive seen), -massive and interesting new lore reveals -many new and interesting characters -a new upgrade mechanic -etc. Yeah, I would gladly even pay $80 for this one.

On the whole it being the size of Limgrave, I personally think that the Shadowlands are going to be the size of Limgrave + Caelid + some of liurnia . It would not only give a appropriate sense of scale but also allow for more dungeons to be fit. Like you have to remember that there's literally 10+ remembrance/trophy bosses in the DLC, I highly doubt that Fromsoftware is actually going to try to fit that many bosses in a Limgrave sized area.

Yeah that entire Siofra underground section just made me rest assured that the map being Limgrave's size will not be an issue at all considering the possibilities for verticality and density.

I originally thought the land of shadow would just be the center of the base game map, but after seeing the previews, I think it’s more likely to be the entire right side of the map, connecting Caelid to the Mountain tops of the Giants. Would make sense too if the whole lands between became a giant ring, reflecting the Elden Ring.

are there really people upset because the DLC is _'about the size of limgrave'_ ? You can literally end up at SL 45 starting as a wretch from just that area. There are more dungeons there than anywhere else in the game!! It makes up half my playtime for every of my builds nowadays and i cruise through the game

For those up in arms about 40 dollars. Blizzard sold the necromancer dlc for that much. Sims on average run their dlcs around 30 to 40.

I have no clue why people think "Limgrave" only accounts for the main section when there's only 5 listed Regions on the map itself. It should be universal knowledge that Limgrave includes Weeping Peninsula. Being just the surface area of Limgrave is still pretty small when they're asking for 2/3 the cost of the base game... And also because I know for damn sure the land-mass within the Land of Shadow HAS to be the section in the middle of the continent that is currently just a massive gulf. If we exclude the eastern section that is South-South-East of Leyndell and North-West-West of the Beast Sanctuary (Farum Azula's original position), that still leaves enough surface area to fill Limgrave and almost all of Caelid's surface areas combined. Don't just look at the space with the water, also look at where the land goes into the sea off the cliff, and it seems small segments of Altus, Leyndell, and Liurnia were scooped out.

Yeah the thing about Limgrave is also this : people who tested it said it was as big as Limgrave... for the first area. Which is the only part they've tested during the 3h preview. The Limgrave comparison was only for what they were allowed to see. The DLC is going to be much bigger than that. Some people really just take the pieces they want out of the given info and jump straight to doom-posting, critical thinking be damned. And it's kinda tiring, not gonna lie. Also about Miyazaki : he's known for underselling things massively, I wouldn't trust his word at all (in a good way :P)

what people don't understand is that fromsoft aren't even doing things differently from other studios, they're just being fully honest with their players. massive expansions that use the same core game to explore new areas and tell new stories are already happening all the time in the gaming industry, but other developers are pretending to make "new games" and selling these glorified dlcs for full price. the narrative people are trying to sell is that fromsoft are the ones overcharging us, but in reality they're the only ones who aren't. it's kinda similar to that controversy about the reused animations or "bad" graphics, it's become standard in the industry to pump out loads of new games with shiny graphics and redo a bunch of stuff for no reason without adding any content of value, but from don't care about any of that. they build a core system that works, make the graphics good enough that you don't think about them, and focus on the important things like new content, gameplay, art, music, story, etc. the reason why these games are so great is because from genuinely prioritise creativity and player experience over profit, they've never tried to do anything to make money they create whatever they want and monetise it however they have to in order to make it financially viable so they can keep creating even more. i don't know why people still refuse to believe that when they've been proving it for decades

No, when people think of Limgrave they think of 1 legacy dungeon, one castle, and some dungeons. All of Limgrave is 5-10 hours. That's the issue with Miyazaki saying the DLC is that size. He should have absolutely expanded on that. It doesn't help that Vaati said he beat two legacy dungeons in 3 hours of play time. I just think people are getting way too loose with terms here. What it SOUNDS like Miyazaki meant is that the map is the size of Limgrave but there is more content + layers within the land of shadows.

It's possible that the surface area of the DLC's open world is the size of Limgrave, because Limgrave is actually massive (I believe surface area means every m² of ground that you can walk on, including dungeons, catacombs and underground). But the legacy dungeons are something else entirely, and we are probably going to get a lot of them

people tend to forget that limgrave is actually the second or third largest area of the map. It's bigger than Altus. You can get lost for hours in just limgrave and many players do in their first playthrough. Even if you know where everything is and what to do, if you include stormveil (which you should) it takes about 15 hours to clear it out 100%. Every cave, every optional boss, all the night's cavalry, every dropped item, all of it. And Stormveil is at least 3 of those hours. And you can pack 20 stormveils into limgrave, you could easily make that 60 hours. Obviously they aren't going to stick 20 stormveils in, but I think they're going to do like, 15? That's still 45 hours minimum, assuming the dungeons aren't more vertical than stormveil, which they almost certainly will be.

So fun fact: Dark Soul's 3 has 2 DLC's at $15 each with Elden Ring's DLC being $40, if we look at the USD inflation rate from 2016 to 2024 we end up at 30.6% which translates to about $39. Considering the fact that DS3 is a very compact game compared to Elden Ring I think the relative amount of content is prolly around the same as both DS3 DLC's just off the numbers and the fact that the "size of Limgrave" estimate is likely just short-hand for saying "the DLC is a lot more dense and compact since we don't need to make a whole world when the focus is a handful of areas". My favorite is the "*slaps limgrave* you can pack so many stormveils in this bad boy" comment someone else made. It's gonna be crazy

We also had underground areas in the main game, so potentially double the Limgrave size I guess. Plus there's likely a final dungeon in the sky/moon/etc outside of the regular map. Maybe just my wishful thinking.

I have faith in Fromsoftware. At a time were it feels like the gaming industry is slowly dying, they really do inspire hope that there are still people out there, who care about making a fun gaming experience, rather than solely trying to turn a profit.

I think most people rush Limgrave a lot. I just started another save (again), and like always, I first did everything in Limgrave/Weeping Peninsula before going for Margit. This puts me, without any farming, at lvl 40. Limgrave is huge, only thing bigger is Liurnia, but Liurnia is made for the horse and has a lot more empty space. But because dungeons (caves, catacombs) in Limgrave are the first ones, they're super short. Imagine big dungeons in their place, and the time it takes to complete the area will more than double!

Since the first concept art for this DLC, I always had this idea that Godwyn could be fought as a boss in the Land of Shadow and that Miquella's spirit could assist the player. It only seems right to wrap up his story along with Miquella achieving one of his long term goals from before his abduction.
