This is the best, simplest heel I have found! Love it! I always have had trouble seeing wrapped stitches and also in seeing the short row heels where you knit to the gap - those gaps were sometimes hard to see and I would always miss one. This heel is so easy to do and you can really do it without thinking and having to keep up with a pattern. This is my preferred heel from now on for sure!!

I did 2 swatches: A 30 stitch flat sample that in worsted that enabled me to see what is going on and a 60 stitch-30/30 on 2 circulars that allowed me to try a mini heel and get back to the regular stitch count. it worked perfectly! I have made a lot of cuff down socks, but am now attempting toe up for the first time. The pattern I am using has a different heel but I plan to try this technique. This video & part 1 is awesome and I think I can do it. It looks like it could become my favorite, but I am a bit nervous to start. The pattern I have calls for increasing the heel by 2 stitches EOR until I increase from 30 to 38 stitches on the heel. I don't see that increase in this method so I am a little confused. I've knitted a swatch so I'm first going to try is without the increases. You're video is absolutely wonderful, showing the first half of the heel and this one showing the second half. Thank you so very much!

Thank you so much for these two videos. I've struggled with quite a few short row heel methods over the years and have had complaints about all of them (I needed to count and to pay too much attention. I always wound up with holes in the corners and had to pick up stitches to fix them. I liked the Japanese Short Row but criminy, all those stitch markers!). The Shadow Wrap has fixed all of my problems and your video has been a huge help. I appreciate that you go so slowly and explain every step in such detail. I'm curious about one thing though. One side of the ridge row on the inside doesn't lay quite as flat as the other side. It's not a huge problem, it just nags at me. It's the side where I'm knitting the twin/triplet stitches, not purling them. I don't think I'm doing anything wrong, but is it possible that I'm somehow twisting the stitches? And if that's just the way it's supposed to look is there a way to mimic whatever's going on on the other side so it lays flatter?
@jjbing3
@jjbing3 5 жыл бұрын
So I guess this heel can be used for any pattern. I think I have it figured out. Total number for you was 64. You split the stitches in half (32 heel stitches, 32 in step stitches) and then worked the heel across the 32 heel stitches. You did 11 twin left side shadow wraps 10 plain knit stitches and then 11 twin right side shadow wraps for a total of 32 stitches. I’m with you so far 🤔.
@jjbing3
@jjbing3 5 жыл бұрын
So I work across and once I reach the first twin or triplet stitch on that side, I knit it or purl it and then make the next stitch a triplet until I have one triplet on each side. Then I start the leg and just knit the triplets together. Sound right? 🤔
@thechillydog
@thechillydog 5 жыл бұрын
Looks like you've got the gist of it. Even though this is probably my favorite way to knit a sock heel, I wouldn't go so far as to say that it could be used for ANY pattern. This heel fits differently than a flap and gusset or afterthought. However, this method could easily be substituted for any other short row heel.
@carotrike
@carotrike 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for a very clear demonstration. I have always worked German short rows for my toes and heels, very similar but I think this way gives a neater finish. I sometimes end up with a bit of a gap between the last turn and the rest of the dock. Do you think this would be illuminated by knitting 2 of the last triple stitches together and knitting the end one with the first of last stitch (depending which end of the row you are) with the first it last stitch from the stitches at the top/upper of the sock? I hope you understand what I am getting at!

Love your videos they are very detailed I think the shadow wrap with be my go to now but when first trying it I must have been missing a minor detail as on the inside one side where the wraps are is fairly smooth with only a slight line u can see/feel but the other side the decrease line is much more pronounced. Not exactly ugly but both side don’t match exayhow I think they should. Not sure if this is normal or a mistake I’m making. When putting the sock one it’s not really a noticeable ridge but if I am making a mistake I sure would like to fix it BTW I’m a left handed knitter so many times I have to remember the right handed knitters needle may be said or in inst as RIGHT needle and I have to remember that’s my LEFT needle Lol

Hi thank you so much I was not good at all to do the ordinary short row heel and the wrap in turn. I did it on my boysfriend sock and it was just perfect the best of the best. If I have 56 stitches, so 28/28 on each needle is it ok if I did 9 double stich on each side and 10 in the middle? Because I thogh that if I did 10 double stitch on each side and 8 in the middle it would be to smal for the middle?? I wish you a happy Christmass and to have fun, love and frienships. xoxo

It's perfectly fine to adjust things a little. I typically figure about a third of the heel sts at the center are regular sts and a third on each side are turning sts, but that's just a guideline. Do what works best for you. Merry Christmas to you also and happy knitting!

I’m a complete newbie to sock knitting. This approach is appealing as all the fiddly aspects of most knit heels are eliminated. Thank you for a terrific tute - Clear and Complete 🥰👏 Why is it called a “shadow” heel? Also, how are instructions presented in patterns? What I mean is, how does one know how many triples to construct for a given sock size?
@thechillydog
@thechillydog 5 жыл бұрын
I think it's called shadow wrapped because the twin/triplet stitches are like a stitch and it's shadow coming out of the same lower stitch. A good pattern would tell you how many twin stitches to make for the first half of the heel. Although, if the pattern was for general short row heel construction they would just call them turning stitches. A good rule of thumb for short row heels is that the first half of the shaping is complete when about a third of the stitches on each side of the heel are turning sts and the third at the center are regular sts.

@thechillydog
@thechillydog 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Debbie. You should absolutely be able to knit this heel with magic loop. If you're set up to knit your socks two at a time with magic loop, you'll likely need to knit the entire heel for one sock and then the entire heel for the second sock. I'm trying to envision it in my head, but I think if you try to work across a full row of each heel at the same time you'll need to slip a lot of stitches, especially as you get further on in the shaping. Let me know how it works out for you.

What is the reason you slipped the last triplet stitch on the connecting round?
@thechillydog
@thechillydog 5 жыл бұрын
As you finish the last WS row of the heel, you form the triplet. Part of forming a triplet on a WS row is always returning the triplet to the left needle (whether it's the first triplet or the last). So you're not really slipping stitches in the traditional sense, the slipping is still technically part of making the triplet stitch. I hope that clears things up. ♥

Yes and no. You can use short row shaping for toe up socks if you start things with a double sided cast on (like Judy's Magic Cast On). It's a little tricky to use shadow wrapped short rows, though. When you knit across the first RS row, there's no way to make the first twin stitch because there are no lower rows of sts to work with.
@mdgardengirl
@mdgardengirl 4 жыл бұрын
I use this heel both top-down and toeup. Only thing I do different for God up, I don't make the end stitch a twin stitch. I knit to the 2nd stitch from the end and make it the first twin stitch. Same for the purl side. This is how I was taught and it works.

@thechillydog
@thechillydog 5 жыл бұрын
Great question. Mechanically, how you form the sts and work the short rows is exactly the same for both toe up and top down. But, since you are working from the top of the sock down towards the toe, the first part of the heel will be at the back of the leg and the second part will be at the bottom of the foot. (For toe up, the first part is at the bottom of the foot and the second part is at the back of the leg,)

So it would be the same as a short row where each side is1/3 number of sts of the heel and the middle third is just knit sts

I had been a dedicated Fish Lips Kiss heel knitter, but now I’ve made 3 pairs of socks using this method. I confess, though, I am not sure of the purpose of the triplet stitches. Is it just so you know to knit the next triplet you come to as a single stitch, and move on to make a triplet of the following twin stitch?

Think of the short rows as stair steps. Each row is a little shorter/longer than the last and, like a step, there is a vertical height difference. The turning stitches (twins, triplets, wrap and turns, double stitches, pinned stitches, etc.) are like a ramp between one step and the next. They make the height difference between the rows more gradual and minimize holes or gaps in the fabric.

The Chilly Dog Thanks for responding. I understand the purpose of the twin stitches, as in the Fish Lips Kiss heel, but I’m unclear about why the Shadow Wrap also uses triplets.

I also use the fish lips for all my socks, this is very close to that technique. Looks like the triplet just tightens the stitches and making it a bit thicker. I’m thinking may be some helpful for my heels that slip in shoes. Will try on my next socks. EXCELLENT VIDEO. Thank you!

Can you explain why you make the triplets?
@thechillydog

Sure. The short answer - to prevent holes at the sides of the sock. The long answer - the turning sts, both the twins and triplets, minimize the height difference between the end of one row and the beginning of the next. If you skip the turning sts and just work 1 less st in each row for the first half of the heel, then one more stitch in each row for the second half of the heel you would end up with a diagonal line of yucky gaps on each side of the heel. They wouldn't look great and would be structurally weak, reducing the life of your socks.

Why do you put three rather than two twins for the second half of the heel? What is the reasoning for it?
@thechillydog

It helps prevent/minimize any holes or gapping that would happen at the turns.

Thanks for your video, I just finished the heel and I think I did this right, but it's looking ugly. I never had holes using the German short row heel, so I gonna unravel the heel and use the Bumerang heel. I don't like your knotty way. You told nothing about how to hold the working yarn in front or back, that would help...
